Thanks for your replies :)
If there is any problem or apprehension as to posting publicly, I request you to *please* mail me about the softwares at: robbiestanford007@hotmail.com
Srik,
Thanks very much for your infos. It was really helpful. This is the first time I am hearing about "Pro Tools" software. I had read reviews on CubaseVST, Logic, Reason, FruityLoops Studio and GigaStudio, but this is the first time I am hearing of the software, "Pro Tools". Thanks for the info. However, I couldn't find enough information on Pro Tools for the PC on the web. Everywere it says "for MAC". Does the software run on Windows also? Btw., I would not mind investing on softwares, but I am really not into those hardwares (like those you had mentioned) mainly because, I find it very difficult handling them. (I had actually been to my friend's Studio at Bangalore which is entirely Hardware based, and computers used only for compiling the finished music, etc.)
And, my goal? Of course I did learn music as a hobby but I think I can start practicing composing songs and finally get into atleast the AD commercials level :)
I would be glad if you help me more. You can also mail me at: robbiestanford007@hotmail.com

Robbie,
I use Cubase SX for everything. Sequencing and mixing both. Gotten comfortable with it these days.
Took a long time to learn though.
Pro Tools is the industry standard. I've never used it. I think just like Mac, its used widely
in music because at one time it was the only software that was stable enough and it just stuck on.
I've also heard that its one of the easiest software to use.
But these days after Win 2000/XP PC is equally stable and there are a lot of software(Nuendo etc)
which can deliver the same results. cheaper too.
Other than that I use soft synths like SampleTank, Edirol Orchestral etc. Also plugins from
Waves, outboard FX from Lexicon.
Hey..If you got Giga and you can put it to good use then you've got the best!
Its the height of what sampling can get. I use NI Kontakt..not as grand as Giga but works.

Or......... Is Pro Tools HD a Hardware? Well, I just stumbled upon many websites referring to it as a hardware. Is it? Well, I am confused! Help me, please... Or, if it IS hardware, do I really need it for music creation? Or, for a home studio? Please, help...

1. Protools - High Defintion - this a collection of external hardware and computer cards plugged into pc or mac
The hardware has many options. One to record audio, one to run clocks, one to run midi etc.
All these are connected to a pci card installed in a pc/mac. Pc's processor is not used here at all, theload is taken by this card.
2.Protools 001/002 are similar 8x8 audio boxes with 1x1 midi with 1 digital I/O.
002 uses a firewar card in you pc or mac and uses the pc/mac processor power.
001 has a card to be installed inthe pc or mac and thsi also uses the pc power.
3. for 001/002 pc must be a p4/ 2.00ghz with 1gb ram and 80gig 7200rpm pc will run the show quite smoothly.
I do film mixing with this it works quite well.
goto www.protools.com or www.digidesign.com
:)
MAC or PC it is personal choice,
pc is cheap, MAC is too costly ($4000) in which we can 3pc atleast. also my choice is PC, after all it helps me to code C# :))

Guys..one of my yearnings is that ..we do not have a audiophile quality labels/record companies in India. Now and then I try to encourage/endear you guys to do real acoustic/unprocessed recordings. I see now Sriks is into doing commercial work. So I think it is the right time to make my pitch again for quality recordings. If you guys listen to thanikaattu raaja:rasaave unnai naan enniththaan..you will hear how transparent that recording is and what a delight acoustic guitars can be. But alas, not many recordings like that in film music.
If you guys are interested in this topic, please let me know. I have few tips for you guys to get the best out of your equipment..

Actually India's best recordings takes place in chennai these days, the engineers are among best on the continent,. seriously, few latest songs from rahman (udhaya, boyz) or infact recordings of Harris is remarkable , eg: get lesalesa dvd and listen to them in a 5.1/dts system. they are done quite well. matches all the stds here in US.
I happened to meet few producers from bombay they say most of them these days perfer chennai than Bombay just for the sound engineers who are quite
good.
I do take utmost care during recording with what ever I have in my studio.
The only problem in India is the final finish product are below par stuff, audio tapes and CD are very cheap in quality, so we dont get the actual recording in most film songs.
btw: how many buy cds these days
some MDs are mixing aimed for mp3, i am not kidding, yes they do.

Sriks..surely technology has improved a lot in the film industry in Chennai (actually too much mediocrity is now hiding behind technology, but I digress).
Anyways, quality of recordings in the US varies a lot. Most popular music are high processed digital recordings that get on my nerves. But the best recordings in the world are also made here. gatewaymastering.com uses EgglestonWorks Ivy speakers for stereo monitoring which retail for $100,000 a pair. So you know how much attention they pay to the quality of sound they create. mapleshaderecords.com use very simple but effective technology to make very transparent recordings, with 'you are there' presence. London Symphony Orchestra have their own record label, which uses modified digital equipment to give you the 'concert in your home' atmosphere.
All this is possible not just with state-of-the-art equipment, but also by paying attention to cables, connections, clean power-supply and ofcourse the basics like acoustics of the studio/recording venue etc. This is what I wanted to bring up here.
(It is really sad that people are content with mp3 quality. I listen to LPs which I think is a much better than CD, but the new SACD format seems pretty good, very close to the quality of LPs without the surface-noise. So I am listening more to SACDs whenever I am not listening to tamil/indian music)

kiru, i agree, but it is a ideal solution theory!
practically....should we ?
cables, best speakers , powerful receiver i agree, how many own these things,
whom do you make music for ?,
bottom line, my music should good in a Rs100 transistor...to Rs 4000 boom box, i am happy as most of listeners own this, about 2%-10% own a 7.1 system. ,
We can keep on investing for proper recording, "you are there music" or near music or direct presence music. We need people to hear it, it is only handful.
last year a sound engineer told me this when I was bugging him on "you are there music" he told me
sure we can get tha quality, but it just costs,
2million+, he gave me a card and asked me call an agent in LA, to get London Symphony for a weekend foot ball party, you will get you are there music...
I am now focusing to make sure that "there is any music" -- then we can worry about "you are there" music
:))
thanks for the interesting discussion :)

Thanks JAY for the list. I am currently reading reviews of the softwares you had mentioned. Thanks again :)
SRIK, I had decided to go for Nuendo as you say that it also works fine. I think I will be able to manage with that. Thanks again. If you have any other suggestion for extra softwares I could buy, I would be more than glad. Thank you, Srik :)

Robbie, 2 years ago...i was using n-track studio...this helped me a lot in learning how to record simple work...I consider this as an investment for education in recording softwares...I nurtured my ideas working with this inexpensive software...At that time, my sound sources were only Korg Triton, Veena and Guitar...I used Veena and Guitar as an audio input into Triton and then applied some insert effects to achieve simple recordings along with triton sequences... n-track studio helped me to record simple scores...It was very thrilling on the whole... Then sometime early last year, i invested on using the following sofwares - ProTools LE along with a YAMAHA 8 channel Mixer... - Battery Native Instruments Drum Machine Software... - HALion String Edition from Steinberg... I learnt little bit more interesting things out of this softwares and hardware... Recently I developed interest in Song writing and vocals...this prompted me to invest on Steinberg Voice Machine... Once in a while in the last 2 years, I bought some more softwares...I returned some of them due to the lack of my time... In general, I am fine so far with what I've...there are no great demands yet for my music either commercially or as a hobby... Within what I have, I wish to use them some more effectively...I hope someday soon my music increases it demands more and for such a utopia, I already have a big wish list of softwares and setup to acquire... Can we listen to your one-minute jingles anywhere?
Regards,
Aditya

Dear Mr. Aditya and Mr. Srik,
Again I have a doubt on Pro Tools HD/LE "software". In the website, it says that Pro Tools 'software' works only with the hardware Pro Tools. Is this correct, or can we also use Pro Tools 'software' as stand-alone like NUENDO? Kindly help...
