Friends,
Talking of pre -1967 censorship in TF, the following are some famous examples:
1. 'mEdaiyil muzhangu arignar aNNaa pOl'- changed to 'Thiru.Vi.Ka pOl' in 'peRRaalthaan piLLaiyaa?'
2. 'indhak kaakkaigaL koottaththai ozhippEn'- changed to 'indhak koottaththin aattaththai ozhippEn' in 'enga veettup piLLai'
3.'velga Kaanchi velga Kaanchi... velgavE' to 'velga naadu .....' in 'Kaanchiththalaivan'
4.'udhaya sooriyanin paarvaiyilE' to 'pudhiya sooriyanin paarvaiyilE' in 'anbE vaa'.
Vairamuthu mentioned in a programme that the irony was that the lip movement (on screen) was retained and the lip synch gap was visible to even the non- discerning viewer! He also narrated the following episode: Kalaignar once climbed up many storeys to reach the Censor office. An officer remarked ‘ enna sir tirupati malaila ERina maathiri irukkaa?’. Kalaignar retorted ‘aamaam tirupatithaan! angEyum mottai! ingEyum mottai!’

bb, the lyrics on the pallavi is correct, but the following charanams are incorrect. This is NOT a love song. :)
This is easily the best motivational song on brink of defeat. Although in the movie, the situation was different, many people believe that this song was written with the freedom fighters of Eelam in mind. Listen to the song and you will understand what I mean.

I think it is Madhyamavathi for the Pallavi. The superb sivaranjani number in this movie is "Maamarthu pooveduthu"- Surendar-SasiRekha.
OV and Aabhavanan were the first to break the jinx -A face-off between Film institute trained and Kodambakkm commercial success! The movie had an incoherent storyline, shoddy script, nice camerawork, imaginative music score and some inspired acting.Karthik,Ravichandran,Jaishankar,,Senthil,Vijayakanth were the bigger actors.Aabavanan s personal favourite "Nadippu Drohi" Arun Pandiyan made it big.He had a small role in Ramanarayanans "Ilam Jodigal" but OV took him to higher levels of ineptitude!
Right or wrong, Aaba s efforts gave credibility to the Film institute stundent s ways of film making.Eelam could have been in Aaba s mind for this song. But the temperature had somewaht come down by 1986.It ran very high in 1984.

Released on Aug 15 '86. Didn't Chandrasekar act in this movie? "Kanmani Nillu" was also from this movie right? I'd liked the songs immediately and only later came to know the MDs were Manoj-Gyan(in a sapthaswarangal prog, Gyan being the judge, Manoj having passed away.)

Curious to know if Manoj atleast was South Indian, that the duo churned such tamil melodies is commendable.

Thanks bb- 11th stdla class cut adichuttu Sathyam Theatrela OV paarthathu gynabaagam vandhiruchu:)
There was a big gang of New College guys sitting behind, who were praising each shot, and commenting knowledgably. Of course, the famous scene of the head lights of the procession of cars had the entire theatre giving a standing ovation!
This song, with its inspiring lyrics came at a very crucial situation. (Though a heavily bandaged Senthil, looking emotionaly charged roused derisive laughter in the theatre!) PBS singing for Jai (PBS had earlier sung for Jai in films like Nee and Nil Gavani Kaathali). PBS was singing after a long time, and the song became hugely popular.
OV introduced Manoj-Gyan (Manoj Bhatnagar and Gyan Verma), who created a stir with their melodious numbers. 'Nilai maarum ulagil'-KJY, 'Maamarathu poo eduthu'-SNS & BSS, 'Kannmani nillu'-SNS & BSS, ''Raathiri nerathu poojaiyil'-BSS were all hits. At a time when SPB & SJ were considered indispensable, M-G broke the myth. And BSS became their 'Aasthana Paadagi'.
The bgm when the old lady (she was an old lady even in Madhavi-1959, in which Manohar and Sowcar J called her 'Paatti'!, she acted in Vaanampaadi-1963 as well-her name was Janaki, I think)rings the bell, and Ravichandran comes in slow motion in the chariot was chilling!
Aabhavanan continued to impress with Uzhavan Magan, Senthoorappovey and Inanaindha Kailgal.

Manoj-gyan s "Mandolin" & "Oud" string arrangements were more Hindish than Tamilish. Will remind us of Salil s "Kabuliwallah" style. But the recording quality was fresh .The Dolak sound in "rrathiri nerathu" was my favourite.
After PBS ,MG tried TMS in Uzhavan Magan -Unnai dhinam thedum thalaivan and for Satyaraj song in Thai Naadu.Their unreleased Moongil kottai (Aaba) had 4-5 TMS songs ,i think)

Prabhu- Manoj and Gyan were both North Indians, I think. Also I think it is Gyan (the MD for Inaindha Kaigal) who is no more. His son is the MD for Aabhavanan's latest Irandu Paer.
Manoj was the MD for Endrendrum Kaathal and Good Luck.
Apart from the afore-mentioned films, M-G gave some memorable songs in Oru Iniya udhayam-1986, Velicham-1987, Urimai Geetham-1987, Megham Karuthirukku-1987, Kaathal Ennum Nadhiyinile-1989 and Thaainaadu-1989

yes saravanan....after gyan's passing, manoj embarked on a lack lustre solo career...we must also know that both aabavaanan & MG were ardent fans of tms using him in their movies...
how can we forget the fantastic tms song "unnai thinam thedum thalaivan" from uzhavan magan & all the songs from "thaai nadu"..too bad the younger crowd gave it a miss..

Friends,
I remember one beautiful M-G number (Uzhavan Magan??? BSS???)- 'ERaa malaithanilE kuRinjippoovu, pooththirukku kaaththirukku paRippathaaru......kaayam nooRu.....
varagu chambaa veLayalE, nenachcha vaazhvu kedakkalE....'

'ThuLLi thuLLi pOgum peNNe' by Manoj-Gyan in 'Velicham" (Karthik film?) was a standout KJY solo, not so popular due to the film's bad run. A truly refreshing song with good lyrics, even as one recollects it..
Manoj was the Producer as well as the Director of both 'Endrendum Kaathal' and 'Good Luck', the disaster of both films prompting his many friends in filmdom to stay away from making films forever. Last heard, he was still itching to give it one more 'last' try.

excellent choice bb... It was one of my fav songs in the 80s... As someone had said, a great motivational song.... When I listened to 'Vidai kodu engal naade' in Kannathil muthamittal, I was reminded of this song... may be because of balram voice being similar to PBS and MSV's being similar to abavanan(or whoever it was)..... I think this combination had another decent song 'Andhi nera thendran kaatru' in inaindha kaigal...

sk: I have also heard that PBS sang in 'Naalaya Seithi'- but I don't know the song. One coincidence is that both OV and NS are about a Newspaper office/ print media! Perhaps the song PBS sang in NS is also in a similar situation.
Btw, I have in my PBS collection, a song 'Neeya Panjali' sung by TMS, PBS and Malaysia Vasudevan. The song has a late 80ish sound to it. Can anyone help me with the film's name?
C V- that's a superb song, yes, sung by BSS & chorus from Uzhavan Magan. It goes like : Varaga chemba kedakkale, vedhache nellum mullaikkale, nenacha vaazhvu kedakkale, kedacha vaazhvum nelakkile, nenacha vaazhva parichikkittu kanakka mattum mudikkale--a great effort by BSS, a song she can treasure right alongside 'Melam kotta neram varum' and 'Vaazhvey Mayama'
Suresh, yes, 'Thulli thulli' is from Velicham is among the best songs of M-G. Though Karthik is the hero, this song featured Nizhalgal Ravi.
Thiru- Inanindha Kailgal was Gyan Verma's sole effort. 'Andhi nera thendral kaatru' is an unforgettable song- perhaps the only song sung by SPB and Jayachandran together(Though they had sung together with Vani and Jency, the song 'Hey Masthana' in Azhage Unnai Aaraadhikkiren)
After M-G split, Aabavaanan didn't do too well- His Kaviyathalaivan-1992 had music by Sidhartha and Karuppu Roja-1996 had music by MSV Raja. Both sank without a trace. 'Annan Ennada Thambi Ennada'-1992 had some good songs ( I don't know if it was by M-G- for it was some years in the making). There was a lovely song 'Iravu nadagam iraval poo mugam nadathum neramadi' sung by---Jikki and Jamunarani! And they had sung it so soulfully- bringing back memories of the 50s when they were in full flow. A wonderful song.
