Now everyone knows why Rajini wanted ARR so desperately and was willing to bend backwards to accomodate him.

Hi JJ and
At the outset, I want to point out that Ilaiyaraaja Sir and ARR are very different kinds of music directors. As we all know, IR Sir's forte was his melody, his brilliant control of raaga. So that is the yardstick by which we can appreciate his music.
Now, can we apply the same yardstick for Rahman? No.
If we still use the same yardstick and be prejudiced against Rahman's music, who is the ultimate loser?
Us.
AR Rahman, if we look at his music objectively, does not depend on the actual tune (whether this is right or wrong is a different issue)- his forte is his sense of rhythm, his interludes between the lyrics of a song.
The beauty of ARR's composition is his multilayer composition- its like lateral thinking. The first time you hear it, you are not impressed..but if you persevere, you discover new things in the same song...take Baba for example...In the song Kichu, the first time I heard it, I was really struck by the poor lyrics....but i kept listening, and then I suddenly discovered a jem in the song...the part where Reena is singing and in the background SPB starts humming a beautiful tune, and it sounds so mischievous- I can imagine Rajini doing that, and it adds a new dimension to the song that I definitely could not discern the first time I had heard the song.
Now, there are lot of such little pieces of brilliance strewn in his compositions over the years that you simply will not notice the first 3-4 times you listen to them.
But if you really pay attention, you will. That is why people say the music grows on you.
Now as music fan's we have two choices, we either say that we are too high and mighty to listen to AR Rahman's music and because of our hatred for the music director, develop a prejudice against his music as well. Or the other way, realise that it is music that is important, irrespective of who the source is.
I must confess that I became a huge fan or Ilaiyaraaja purely because of the love for music that I cultivated while growing up on ARR's film music.
And I simply fell in love with the beauty of Ilaiyaraaja's music. In the same breath, I really cannot honestly stand behind every IR composition, the same way no ARR fan will stand behind every ARR composition.
So instead of starting the IR ARR wars all over again (however interesting it might to a lover of the polemic), let us leave our prejudices behind in our journey of Tamil Film Music.

Baba's audio is just received well. It has not yet reached a level to smash records in telugu!.
Indra is still number 1 in audio sales. There hasn't been a movie in telugu which has yet to cross Nuvve Kavali audio records. It was idlebrain no.1 for 4 months!. And still the top 10 in idlebrain means nothing in my opinion.
If you like the composer, hero, etc listen to the music, don't make assumptions as to the records, until they are actually made.

Vengat Raghavan !!! ARR has been fooling all the fans!! This interludes and all those non existent
beauty are all not intended in the first place!!
As i told ARR never meant to do anything. He does lots of trial and error. If you mean that "little noise" in that song as background humming is mischievous i am disappointed!! "Maagic(Not magic) ondrum seiyavillai Vidhi nammai serthadadi"
You think this lyrics will become likable over a period. Defenitely not. Even if it takes 200 years my opinion about this song won't change!! I can only call spade a spade!! He has murdered the beauty of tamil with his disgusting composition.
Pure and Simple. I still maintain after listening to 5 or 6 times the song Kichu Kichu song irritates me more and more. Today i played that song for my friend and his wife.. Her first sentence was " Chee Enna pattu idhu". Well ARR needs have his head examined before coming out with craps like this. I paid deep attention to that song... it is testing my patience more and more.. i couldn't wait for that song to end.. So the theory of "more you listen more you will like"
will go out of window. I don't like one bit even after several forced listenings!! I was prepared to go through the ordeal of listening just to play a fair game. But i guess it is not worth it as you guys still try to convince me it will be likable down the line!! Very unhappy state of affairs!!

Hi JJ,
"This interludes and all those non existent
beauty are all not intended in the first place!!"
There are two aspects to this statement
a) The beauty in the interludes is non-existant.
b) It was not intended in the first place.
I am going to look into the second aspect of "intent" . From Roja onwards, we have seen ARR use these interludes (no lyrics, just music in the songs) in almost all of these songs. If he did not think that it was good, why would he open himself to attack by having these in all of his songs?
Secondly, even if the beauty in the interludes was unintentional, a matter of chance as you assert, IT IS STILL A BEAUTIFUL PIECE, how does it go against the beauty of the song? After all, isnt that what we are after?
Secondly, in your comment about the songs, I would like to bring to your attention these arguements that you presented
a)You think this lyrics will become likable over a period?
b) He has murdered the beauty of tamil with his disgusting composition.
None of this as you would realise yourself, is a commentary on the quality of music composition- all that you have said is that the quality of lyrics is poor- The questions that I have to ask then are
a) Who is at fault for murdering tamil- the lyricist or the music director?
Of course, it is the lyricist. Now, the songs for this movie are composed by Vairamuthu and Vaali, the two premier lyricists in Tamil...agreed the quality of lyrics may not be as great as Kaviarasu Kannadasan's, but you have to take into account that these lyrics are composed and targetted at an entirely new generation... whether you like it or not, times have changed, and lyricists have been forced to adapt themselves.
b) Is it right to judge the music director on the fault of the lyricist?
Definitely not. If you tell me that the tune of the song is poor, or that the recording is of low quality, then I can attribute it to the music director...but your reservations are against the lyrics, and therefore the MUSIC must not be judged by the standards reserved for lyricists.
The other arguement that you used was that some of your relatives did not like the song.
"Today i played that song for my friend and his wife.. Her first sentence was " Chee Enna pattu idhu".
Now, I am really sorry that she did not like it, but you have to see if what she did not like was the lyrics, or was it the music.
Of course, "Kichu Kichu thaa" may not appeal to certain sensibilities and that may be translated towards a hatred for the song.
Finally, If I were like you, I would be using the same standards (of confusing lyrics and music ) and use them consistently. Can you in all honesty say that IR composed songs had brilliant lyrics always? If they did not, did you attribute it to IR's fault?
Regards
Venkat
