1.The 'Yuhi chaala ' song from swades was orginally composed for Lagaan .
2.Harris Jeyaraj worked with him only for 2 films !!
3.On today's music -
"What is today's Tamil film music all about? They are nothing more than fast numbers or remix downloaded. What took me weeks to make music for a "Gentleman" or "Rangeela" can be done today if you have a computer, software and then pre-set the rhythms and you have a disco number! Fast music is no big deal today as anyone can become a music director"
4.Rajiv Menon film in tamizh .

Vijay: Yes, you have a point. Even in Attagasam there a couple of nice numbers (not great or anything like that). The director is Charan.
Thennavan music may have sunk without a trace, but there is an interesting number that goes "vatta vatta nilavukku .... vasamaga maati kondai". Good one by YSR (If not great).

Observer: You may also want to listen to VS's "Aasai aasai ippozhudhu peraasai appozhudhu ..". A good number that also appears in the Hindi movie Hulchul.

Irish music in 7GRC??? could u be a bit more specific? u definitely mean IR-ish and not Irish rite???
yuvan is at the best a hi-tech copycat. there is no point in even putting him in the same pedestal as say the rest of the pack (even for theoritical comparison purposes...the only thing thats going for YSR is that he is very prolific. he has practiced the art of ctrl C and ctrl V n is able to deliver songs faster (i said deliver songs and not deliver results)
and wuts the source to ur claims that 7GRC is the big seller in recent times? could we have a source please? or is it jus ur opinion/hope/wish?? If there was an album that sold more than boys in the past 3 years then im ignorant abt the current trends in TFM!
and lets cut the crap of "its easy to become a music director today" bcos its not. most people have no idea how many talented guys r out there, struggling to make a mark in the field, when people easily do the "cutting otting" job n get a good name (sic!)

"Irish music in 7GRC??? could u be a bit more specific? u definitely mean IR-ish and not Irish rite???"
Hey good pun. Listen to the first interlude of Kanpeasum Varthaigal and note the use of the Irish bagpipe, and how somehow it sounds Indian/Irish at the same time!! Listening to these songs again my single thought is: WHO DID THE BEAT PROGRAMMING? Terrific terrific stuff.
"and wuts the source to ur claims that 7GRC is the big seller in recent times? could we have a source please? or is it jus ur opinion/hope/wish??"
Why would I WISH anything Shyam? I'm interested in seeking what reality is without the filters of idol-worship and the like. I don't wish YSR to be the bee's knees or whatever. He just won me over and he now rules the charts. Check the Top 10 at cinesouth.com. 7GRC is at 4 even now. I don't see New anywhere in the vicinity.
"and lets cut the crap of "its easy to become a music director today" bcos its not. "
Well don't blame me for that one. I never uttered anything of the sort. Listening to 7GRC indeed I wonder how you can say that it's all copy-paste methodology. The rightness of the beats for the melodic phrasing is so on the money that he deserves awards for excellence in copy-pasting!:-)

Vijay:
"that will be a never-ending task and a highly subjective list that wouldnt serve any purpose."
Don't worry Vijay, I like to do "purposeless" things. Like listening to music for example :-).
"What is needed is authentic sales figures on recent audio sales to even determine for sure whether ARR is "slumping"."
That's not my goal here if that's what you're thinking, I'm merely curious where the zeitgeist is moving. As for authentic sales figures, with tax cover-ups, piracy, downloads and the like, I say good luck on that project.

Vijay:
"Observer, you have a serious reading comprehension problem."
Pardon me but I think the problem is on your side. I already said, "no problem. Let's change it from you to fans." So read that as fans' short-sighted adoration of mediocre music is misdirecting ARR. Now please switch off the rant mode Vijay, don't be so grumpy.
"Like I said earlier, he didnt call a press meet to criticize others. His comments were in response to a question related to today's trends and composing methods."
I don't know why you think that criticism is only criticism if you call a press-meet to do it. I don't think IR, NS or Kreem called press-meets to berate their respective successors. The frustation spilled out advertently or inadvertently in one interview or another. Once upon a time when confronted with similar questions ARR was far more generous about people like NS and Anu Malik. Surely it's not possible that he thinks less of YSR/VS than he does of Malik/NS? Oh, wait YSR/VS are a true threat in a way the Hindi composers weren't.
"If a composer couldnt spot a discordant note in his own tune(as observed by SPB of a current hot young MD) then something tells me that he would have "
I don't know Vijay, you whip out that SPB anecdote in a manner that suggests I'm expected to abruptly capitulate in total defeat and weepy remorse. Why? Much as I respect SPB, his lament is the ever-familiar oldster complaint, namely that everything now/new is discordant, dissonant, discomfiting. I'm pretty sure he said the same things about Rahman when the latter arrived on the scene, especially so considering that Rahman effectively ended his, SPB's, monopolistic male singer reign in the South. Now don't ask me for links and the like, but I distinctly recollect his coldness about Rahman at that time, though clearly now that he's had time to digest Rahman's music, he doesn't consider it unpalatable anymore. Certainly many at that time considered Rahman's singing, his use of untrained voices etc to be "discordant". Now does anyone even raise an eyebrow when Simbu belts out all his own songs in a movie? See that is progress for you, every revolution advancing through "discordances".
In any case, a discordant note or two doesn't panic me. Come on Vijay, the creaking of an old tree's branches in the rain is very discordant, but there is no sound more beautiful - to my ears at least. I wonder what SPB (and you) would think of the relentless honking and squealing of sax greats like Albert Ayler and Coltrane, the very thought makes me laugh.
So alright that young composer made a mistake, should we shoot him dead? Mistakes can be a great source of creativity. Indeed almost every truly artistic discovery, as well as some scientific ones, are mistakes of sorts. Without the mistake called random mutation, evolution of life on earth wouldn't have gotten very far.
A system that rules out all mistakes is a dead system. Ask any true artist. You speak of rules as if you want to turn music-making into a species of machine-part manufacturing. This kind of ferocious note-pedantry is the norm in classical music. Why do people want to turn pop into staid classical instead of letting it be its own thing, wild and unpredictable? Pop can sometimes allude to the note-perfection of classical, it needn't be enslaved by it.

Vijay:
"How do you know that Yuva was a failure musically?"
Musically? Is that some kind of trap Vijay? I said it failed commercially though it was intended to be successful (given the film's budget, stars etc.). Yet it does not even feature in the Top 10 of the year so far. Rahman doesn't have a single release of his that made it to that list at boxofficeindia.com. That I say is alarming news for him. And if you want to waste my time attacking my source, try finding a more above-the-board trade journal first.
"On the other hand if you line up the albums of other MDs it would be 2 successes vs 8 failures."
Well if that's a 1:5 ratio and Rahman's is the same, doesn't it mean that they're equals, atleast commercially? Or if 1:5 is the typical movie hit-flop ratio, which I think it is, then maybe we should factor out MDs altogether from the equation. This scenario doesn't privilege ARR either as you can see.

kanpesum varthai is basically a take off from the song Jeeva (jodi / Doli Sajha Ke Rakhna). The theme is a well polished version of various IR bgms. (cutting n otting for u...i agree he has mastered that art!! He surely deserves the award for excellence in cutting otting)
There is more to irish styled music than jus 10 seconds of bagpipe. I can actually hear more of the lute (or a recorder maybe) in that interlude. Why is it that any bagpipe is considered irish/ scottish??? the piece ur talking abt has absolutely no traces of irish style.
When ARR was talking abt making Irish styled music, i suppose he meant the Celtic style and not jus using a bagpipe! there is much more to celtic music than a bagpipe. the fiddle is the primary instrument, then come the tin flutes, bombardes, the uilleann pipes, the bagpipes, the button accordion, harp, dulcimers etc etc.
An instance of scottish style music in recent times was by VS in Run, the intro to Poi solla koodhadhu song. Thst was a lot more closer to celt than wut u think to be YSR's celtic efforts.
The violin interludes in PP (the title song) has lot of traces of irish fiddle styles.
Jus curious, for how long have u been a serious listener of TFM?

Shyam:
Well "irishness" is a slippery concept. I'm sure even the Irish have difficulty with it. Whatever Irishness you adapt I'm sure there'll be someone to claim it's not good enough. You think ARR's use of trance is likely to impress trance-heads in the West?
Why would 7GRC deliver a deep Irish-Indian fusion when that's not its explicit brief? Wait for Selva's next set in Ireland for that. Googling the entire Irish orchestra for my benefit though helpful is hardly the point, are you saying that all of them need to be used before you'll be convinced? That's just absurd. By those criteria most Indian music wouldn't count as Indian!
"How long have I been a serious TFM listener?"
How does 20 yrs grab you?
