Simply mind-blowing
November 20
Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi can’t stop raving about the songs of Mani Ratnam’s Yuva. “A.R. Rahman and Mani Sir and dynamite together,” says Vivek on the sets of Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria’s Masti, and adds, “The six songs Rahman has recorded for the film are mind-blowing.”
Ajay Devgan, his co-star in Yuva and Masti, uses the same words to describe them. Incidentally, when the film was launched earlier this year, Mani Ratnam had decided not to have a single song in it.
Vivek also feels that Abhishek Bachchan’s is the best role and best performance in the film. “That guy’s career will take off in a big way after Yuva,” predicts Vivek.

Music for the youth and the young at heart
------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's the new buzzword around town. "Yuva". Ever since the first promos of Mani
Ratnam's much awaited film Yuva hit the screens, everyone can't stop talking
about the film. The music of the film is rocking the charts. Brilliantly
composed
by maestro A R Rahman, the sound of the film is just like the title itself.
Young,
energetic and fresh. "The music of Yuva is by far the best music I've heard this
year." Enthuses Venus head honcho Champak Jain. It's music for the youth
and the young at heart. The youngsters will freak out. "Mark my words, it's
going to top all the music charts and create havoc!"
Each song is a gem, starting with the zippy "Anjaana Anjaani", picturised on
Vivek oberoi and Kareena Kapoor. Kareena was running high temperature
when she shot for this song and Vivek was joining the unit for the first after
his
accident. Inspite of this, the two finished shooting for the song in precisely
one
and a half days. Obviously the name Mani Ratnam is enough inspiration. The
other song picturised on the pair popularly known as the disco song "Fanaa"
was picturized on the first day of the shoot and completed on the last day on
the schedule. The other chart toppers include the title track Yuva sung by
Rahman, Kartik and Mehboob the lyricist.

Maddy, I live in Woodbridge.
Rajasaranam,
yes I thinl what cn said was right. It is his opininion and I respect that guy. I dont expect people to listen to it 80 times. BUT(BIIIIG BUT here) I am the kind of guy who will listen to it 80 times because I know ARR's music is tooo complex(sounds etx.) to be judged in 20-30 hearings. Albums like 12ka 4 took me two full years to like them
U may call it bad and inabiulity of ARR but I call it brilliance. I think our(atleast my) brain strcutures are too simple to understand the music of ARR. Tis is my opinion.
I come out stringly against those who attack people who hate AE! paran is wrong! I agree. It is one of those numerous cases of an ARR fan going wild after someone states their opinion which is -ve.
sidenote: I still have not bought the CD. it is not out in NJ yet(atleast to my knowledge). If things are so bad like this why wouldn't someone resort to piracy. Lets see I will give it 2-3 more days and then scrrew it I am downnloading the MP3s!
MIL
I have no idea what raaga is. just moved to NJ. have no clue abt anything here. please gimme details. thanks

Ras,
If u could appreciate Thoodhu Varuma (That was the only song in his career, IMO, where HJ created a diff feel ), U would certainly appreciate Aayitha Ezhuthu.
If u dont mind, there are a few nitpicks, b4 i proceed on to what I've started to say. (Sorry about it, but I jus want u to get the facts right.)
1. *that creepy Apache Indian *
That wasnt Come on Come on Oh Kamakshi.. :) That was the "No Problem" song in Love Birds.
2. *However the credit gave a female name, Shaheen!!*
If u notice, the credits say "Rap and Lyrics(!?!) by Blaaze, Ethnic Vocals by Shaheen". The Dol Dol Bit are by Blaaze. This guy's settled in Rahman's camp now! Shaheen was jus brought in for those voice modulations in the beginning and for a few seconds in themiddle and at the end.
3. *There's a recurring male chorus that says something like "PaNaaL paNaal"*
:)) I dont know whether to laugh or cry! :) Were u being that sarcastic? :)
4. *Now the likes of KR would also be employing her in their forthcoming albums *
That was cruel! ;)

Well, coming to what I began w/ (I hope I havent forgotten! Nitpicks always do this to me!)..
Lemme take you through the songs in a way I perceived them.
1. Hey Goodbye Nanba
It certainly isn't a hidden message from Vairamuthu to Rahman as u make it out to be! This was one song that had me completely confused in the first listening.. and completely awestruck in my second.
When I first heard the samples on tamilurban, I really liked the rhythmic tune by Shankar M. Then I saw the Yuva trailer where Lucky Ali was singing Anjaana Anjaani. When I bought the cassette, Sunitha started singing "Hey Goodbye Nanba". I was wondering how many songs were actually in the album! ARR, to my pleasant surprise, had fused the 3 right into one song. And he has actually done that w/o giving us that glaring impression of a sudden change of gears.
Sunitha does try to be sexy here, and succeeds.. When she's singing.. err.. chanting the "Sparisamam Thulli Visham" bit, there's an electronic instrument ringing around my head! It started in one ear and went on to the other.. And then Shankar takes over! It starts out w/ a very energetic "Nee Yaaro".. If ur wondering why the credits say Karthik, u'll be able to pick him in the "Naan Yaaro" bit. :) The "Kan Thodri" bit has been brilliantly tweaked by Rahman to give that Electronic feel. If he'd jus left it as such, I feel it would have been a bit flat. ok ok.. I'm actually taking u through every 5 seconds of the song here! I'll get on w/ it! :)
(Since Lucky Ali was the lead singer in the Yuva version, ARR must have added a few of his bits in that song into this.)
The humming by Sunitha and Lucky Ali carry us on to the next stanza where the tune completely changes.. That was very subtle.. yet Explosive. "Kalla Vizhagalil" has the Shankar M that we know. From that point on, the energy just doesnt dissipitate.. The piano bit had me really furious in the beginning, but now, I guess I know the reason for it. It gives me this impression that Rahman's tried to bring a "peaceful" feel into the song all of a sudden to shake the listener's up a bit, and jus when they are given the rude shock from their foot tapping, Shankar and co take u back there! :)
This is, IMHO, ARR and Mani's answer to "Uyirin Uyire". And the Rahmania in me wants to believe ARR's notched up one. Ferrari's post proves just that!

ARR is god - just listen to 'Jana Gana Mana' on headphones and you will listen to a wonderful composition entirely done using bass programming. The best or bonus stuff in this album is his highness's voice which is very very liberally used throughout - his alaaps in 'Nenjemallem' and right at the ending of 'Fanaah' is A-MAZING. People are bang on when they say this is one of his best because it is the new guy composing for us. What i mean is, he can compose for AE in the standard way he used to for Bombay or Dil Se - but it is the new guy exposed to world music, new sounds, new emotions that is at work here. He has put none of tat in latest Bharathiraaja album or Lakeer. Tats vintage rahman. This AE is different. I only see more hardcore fans coming up - i, btw, am more mad about him than ever.....
Tell u wat, i am not done with AE yet while one more album of his is gonna release - NEW. Title song on TV is very good - on the likes of 'girlfriend' of Boys.

Next comes the song that rocked my world!
2. JanaGanaMana
ARR's added that sound in the beginning to give me a warning to watch out for the incoming song! :) Rahman's "Oh Yuva" is brilliantly rendered. Typical Rahman I think, and then.. "Jana Gana Mana". This isnt the Rahman I know! What happened to his voice?! He sounds so.. so.. cool! A DFer here came up w/ the perfect word.. Nonchalant!
If anybody can come up w/ a hard-driving song w/ laidback singing, it's this man! Any other MD would have been blatantly aggressive. The whistles give us fleeting visions of the Wild West! Karthik's used only for the parts in lower tones and in the aggressive bits like "Chut Put Sel". The song builds up in perfect pace w/ glass breaking all over the place. The next two stanzas help move Rahman from the "come in-scream-modulate-leave" singer to a very decent level. But then "Vellai Pookal" had already showcased his singing capabilities.
The pick of the album... ARR's done it again.
3. Sandai Kozhi
Another song that blew me away after a couple of listenings..
It begins w/ Madhushree in a typical village feel - clay pots, Bullock cart sounds, the works! ;)
She sounds exactly like Sadhana Sargam! That's a definite plus! She pronounces exactly like Sadhana! There go her rave reviews! ;)
The part that got me hooked to the song was "Konjam neram ennai kollaya". Enchanting.
But then, as u rightly pointed out, the "Ayya" bit does sound like "Chinna Thai aval" in Dalapathi. That shook me up quite a bit :( . She then progresses to higher pitches.. w/ an attempted village kinda pronunciation. Her modulations are great. Voice is good. The tune, Amazing. Very very hummable. Then comes Rahman! He fits back into the mould that I talked of in the previous song w/ complete ease.. and what a cameo it proves to be.
On the whole, this is the perfect response to people who are looking for melodies.
4. Dol dol
No. It isn't a DJ's work. No. It isn't cacophonic (Well, not for me!). It is Rahman dishing out a very experimental and creative and, looking at the response it's getting, a successful number.
Shaheen's there just for the voice modulations. Right at the beginning, Rahman makes u sit up and take notice. He effortlessly gives u a transition from Shaheen's voice to an electronic instrument. The drums begin here. And loop throughout the song. Blaaze begins w/ his "Dol dol" bit.. and gets looped throughout the song! :) Kiddin, if u notice, every 10 seconds has a slight variation. SOmething or the other is made different. Be it the singing, the beats in the background, Shaheen weaving in and out of the song. Maxwell w/ his trombone (It's a trombone isnt it?) starts it out like a James Bond tune, and continues in a better vein.
The tune where Blaaze sings his "Deega deega" bit sounds catchy.. The beats start rising feverishly. Stop. Shaheen is still left modulating. And all of a sudden, the beats change into more of a dappaanguthu!
A very experimental piece from Rahman. I guess, it's gonna be like a theme for Maddy in the film.
