Guys & gals, I have already put this stuff in one of the therads. But, owing to the poor response, I am starting it as a topic. I am sure if some of us get together, we can sponsor an album of say, IR's great BGM pieces or something like that. I really miss listening to them. I am sure we could raise the funds over a period of time.
Interested people, please respond in this thread. We will have to plan out the details also.

Buddies, here is a chance for us. Mayor Daley of Chicago has given the green signal for the first ever world music festival in Chicago. It is from Sep 21-30. It is in today's Tempo of the Chicago Tribune. If musicians from Mali, Laos, mbira form Zimbabwe and other relatively unheard of places on this earth are being invited, then we don't have a problem in asking the authorities to invite IR? The full contact info is given in the paper. I am going to compile some songs and give to the authorities. They are looking for fusion music and other never heard of world music. I will give more details shortly, so we can go as a group to the authorities and present the case. They have not yet lined up all musicians.
We may even approach IR directly after a chat with Chicago organisers and ask him to also play a part of his symphony.
Contacts are: Lois Weisberg, Commissioner of Department of Cultural Affairs
James Law, Director, Mayor's office of special events

sithArAm,
can you please give the complete contact information (postal address, phone numbers, faxes, emails,
webaddresses). my suggestion would be: one of us take the initiative, pull in people like srikAnth, shashi, sridhar
sIthArAman and select some the best - without any technical glitches - of his productions and send them as
samples.

Great timely observation...please let me know if you need help with this...i am in downtown Chicago, i could got in person and meet any of them. I really do not know how to proceed...but i think if they are particular about fusion music, then we can give them CDs of "Nothing but wind" and "How to Name it?"...please let me know your ideas...my email is kbhat1@uic.edu

Guys:
The Artist Formerly Known As Prince is re-recording all his original numbers so that he can have cpoyrights to all his albums. Now he can market and sell ALL his songs without having to worry about copyright infringements towards the labels under which they were originally recorded. Perhaps IR can do the same thing (not all his numbers of course, only a select portion of his hit numbers !) and release them again. What do you think ? Does IR know this can be done ? Can it be done ?
- From: SPAM (@ portal.ameritech.com)

I too saw that article on prince. But, he can do it because of the number of hits he has over the last 20 years. it is no big effort. IR doing it, first of all he wont' care , second, this will require a huge committee to coordinate the entire effort. Imagine the virginal (spontaneous and devastating)songs of his first 200 movies being mastered again! I am reeling at this thought

srinath, that was bcos prince had named an album 1999 long time back, and wants to cash on it now:)))

bb, whatever...does the same copyright issue apply to IR if he re-records his numbers ? Does he get full freedom over them ? Forget the songs (I don't want to try out an aging SPB or SJ, and DEFINITELY don't want HH sniffing and snorting his way thru' SPB's melodies !!!) but atleast the BGMs of movies ? That way IR/fans wouldn't have to run around for the original soundtracks - just ask IR to record them again !

The idea sounds great, but the effort involved in it is massive! I share SPAM's apprehensions.

Srinath,
I think, IR himself mentioned that BGM copyrights are always with the composer. Only the rights to the songs are sold.
But I think IR would like to new stuff like symphonies and concertos. If you are programmer you would understand how it is work with old code, even if it is your own :)

hey ! Kiru ! He just has to get his intrumentalists to play again ! I am pretty sure, he'll still have the notes for some of his better stuff. He can release it as a CD along with a short preview (3-minute teaser) of his Symphony. That way he gets to feel the pulse of the public without actually risking much. If he is not convinced he can wait for some more time or do whatever he wants with his Symphony. This is also the best way to hype up his Symphony (with a teaser).

Guys,
The enthusiasm shown by some of you is pretty impressive! However, has anyone considered what IR's response might be? Do you really think IR would respond favorably? Even in concerts (billed as IR's) IR rarely conducts the music. He will sing one or two songs at the most. That's it. Gangai Amaran will do everything. I have seen MSV's concerts. He would participate in it with gutso. What I am saying is that IR has shown no inclination to reach out to his fans. Even now, when he has very few big banner movies,I have heard that he has refused to compose music for some reputed actors and directors. What makes you guys think that he would go through all the trouble just because some rabid fans (who may be very good in their respective professions, but have no standing in the film or music industry) request him to?

I do'nt think IR would like to rehash his old gems. Its well worth a try if somebody else can do it.One can always re-engineer IR's work and release it digitally.I do'nt see any role for the composer here.we might need to have his consent before throwing it out commercially.
I do'nt see any point as to why IR should go out of the way to reach out.If we need good music, we have to seek it and go for it.We can'nt expect him to knock at our door and make us listen to his work.
Thats the sad state of affairs .The discerning ablility has almost but gone.
I think IR should keep using his creative energy rather rehashing old works.
Creativity is such a rare piece of gift and he has it in abundance and wasting his time to market his work is meaningless.
His work will always find its place in history if it can transcend time.
Did Mozart or beethoven needed to run from pillar to post to promote their work? No.
Good work will find its way thru despite the efforts by the human race to ignore it.
He should keep doing what he is known for, unleashing that creative psyche .

AM: Some of IR's best are definitely behind him. Personally, I would rather buy a re-recorded ersion of his old gems than go for his new albums. I wouldn't want anything that IR has not personally re-recorded and I don't want stuff like the BGM of "Aur Ek Prem Kahani" where he rehashed "Katril Endan" and "Kaadhal Oviyam". I want a re-recording with the original notes, played again the same way, but with the latest recording techniques and instruments. I don't even want him to experiment by replacing one instrument with another etc,. The exact same old wine in a brand new bottle. Worse comes to worst, I'd rather spend my time at Rex's site than listen to every T, D and H trying to become a maestro by re-recording his/her own version of IR's gems. For example, when CDs were first becoming popular, there were several "IR" CDs where some adhigaprasangee's had tried to improvise the Maestro's recording and show their "Genius" by increasing the bass volume. Sounded like crap ! I won't stand for another b****dization of IR's music like that. Not now, not ever.

No... I am seeing such "reengineered" stuff in the HFM market these days. T,D,H from London, Singapore and Gorakhpur are all into that market and come up with the "digitised" versions of hindi songs. And these digitised version are horrible! I wouldnt like to see such destruction happening to IR's numbers. It would be sad if some parties even attempt to do such a stuff to IR's songs. Even if IR himself wants to do it, I dont want any digitisation of his numbers, but only a re-recording which would enhance the quality!
Coming to the practicality of it, IR may not be too interested in doing this. But he could authorise someone whom he trusts (his sons??) to undertake this task and he could merely supervise it.

Alright,in that case someone will have to get hold of the master copies and put it thru some audio balancing software to bring it close to CD quality. This I think is could be achieved considering folks in Hollywood are releasing the color version of some B & W classics.
But this will be a very expensive undertaking and we need sponsors(philanthropic) for it.Am not discouraging, but to be honest, considering the current moral state, its near impossible to get some rich guy to part his bucks for this project.
Srinath:Am not sure why you want to set boundaries and would want old wine in a new bottle. This kind of mindset is'nt healthy for an avid music buff like you.Even IR has claimed that he has no boundaries and that he does'nt belong to any school of thought.
I do share some your concerns on his choice of instruments and singers but bottomline thats his creation and some film producer is willing to pay for that.If IR wants to stay in film business, he needs to compromise. He has to use those synth equipments and thats the reality. He might get some nice subjects once in a while but thats all he can get.Am not sure wether you know this ,the per hour rent of prasad is Rs2000.If you sit thru a day you have to shell out a min 20000 for rent, then payment for instrument players. There are some commerical variables involved in this game.
Customer demand has changed and thats the reality.

Anand:
Maybe IR thinks of his music like words - once spoken they remain spoken. But I think of it as a statement that has to stand the test of time. Just as any philosophy or theory is updated with the advancement of technology and discovery of new facts, I want IR's music to be updated to be of relevance in the present. I do not want IR's best music to be remembered as "poorly recorded music" as some would claim. Let him go on composing newer music. But I want the old gems to remain as they were except for what improvement technology can provide.
