I think UnarchigaL's heroine was L. Kanchana (not the Sindha MaN fame). She is a widow in that and these two get into some affair. I remember Srividhya also acted in the movie, a good hearted Daasi.

Thanks, bb, for this song. This was perhaps Shyam's third film in Tamizh after Karunthel Kannayiram-1972 and Appa Amma-1974.
Another song from Unarchigal is 'Vedhanai kaattil', sung by SJ and PS- a haunting song, the lyrics written by Ka. Vezhavendan, who was a minister in Karunanidhi's cabinet. I vaguely remember another song sung by Shyam himself.
The same Kamal-RCS- Shyam combo came together again in Manitharil Iththanai Nirangala-1978.
Subbu, I too remember reading that Srividya had a rather bold role in Unarchigal- Maragatham being the character's name.

Thanks for the song, bb.
The intro and the bgms are very raja-ish.
(Is it possible he was involved in this?) or could
be Shyam's originality. Just that I have not heard more of this kind from Shyam.
The following are the Specific touches I am talking about:
-The intro humming dialoguing between the singers uses very short motives unlike the long pallavi.
-The pallavi orchestration has a sweet guitar
only backing, before the tablas roll in.
-String counterpoints in the anupallavi and
oboe counterpoints in the charanam.
- The bach-ish flute break in the second interlude.
- Tabla nadai changing every two lines, is
amazing showcase of that great 'talking drum'.

Another song that is very raja-ish, is by V.Kumar
"Kannellam un vannam - nenjellam un ennam".
Excellent song with nice arrangements, full orchestra and interesting phrase rhythms, seamlessly merging western waltz and hindustani.
bb, can we get that next?

rjay,
I've always appreciated your posts. Besides bringing a wealth of knowledge to this forum, you've always been a gentleman in doing it. So I curb my angst and appeal to you, do you have to say Raja-ish to explain Shyam and V.Kumar's music?
Shyam had been MSV's assistant among others for years before he got a mini-break in a dozen movies. He still managed to leave his individual mark on TFM.
V.Kumar was firmly established long before IR was an itch in his parents' thoughts. It's as insulting as recalling M.R.Radha as Radha Ravi's father when you recall V.Kumar through IR's trail.
If youth in the forum did this I can shrug it off thinking, "yes, that's unfortunately their frame of reference," but you are a veteran musician with enough knowledge, hence this post.

Udhaya,
I used the term 'raja-ish' only as a frame of reference for the style, and not to degrade the genius of Shyam or Kumar. I could have avoided the
name, though!

I think Unarchigal is a dubbed version of Mal movie Raasaleela and its MD is Devarajan.
The SJ solo in this movie is a haunting melody aka 'Sandhye' in Madhanotsavam.

Rasa Leela had a great tune "Killiye.." sung by KJY and Vani J . Wonder if this is available on the web to listen to..

It is highly possible that IR was inspired by V. Kumar and Shyam besides others. After all, it has been proven that IR has copied musicians from all sections and from all parts of the world.

Shyam is not inspired by or is one for IR. Likewise V Kumar.
When i just heard the opening humming of SPB I kenew it was Shyam, a big clone of Salil. Listen to: MAZHA THULLI THULLI NRYITHAM AADI VARUM MAANE by KJY in one Mal film. Shyam' best works in Tamil aare two super hit number in a Mouli film: Aananda Ragam is one I remember!
Great, bb!

Athi mathuraa anu raathaa
Can any one tell who sang this song? I remember it as AM Raja and konjum kuralon K Jamuna Rani. My friend says P Suseela. We have a wager on. I hope I will have a rich weekend. :)
Any details about this song will also be welcome.

Song of the Day: koondhalilE mEgam vandhu from bala nagamma.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/koondhalile.rm
MS writes:
This song from the film Baalanaagamma has been evading
for quite some time and I was fortunate to get my
hands on it recently. There are not many songs in TFM
which can boast of pure "bilahari". To my knowledge
there are 2 songs entirely in thins majestic raga:
(1) nee ondru thaana en sangeetham - from unnaal
mudiyum thambi
(2) koondhalile - baalanaagamma
Both songs were composed by IR and delivered
impeccably by KJY. In terms of majesty song 1 scores.
The first song is set as if a fallen musical maestro
is singing to the raga bilahari " hey, what if you
desert me ? isaikkuL nee adakkamaa unakkadhu adanguma
?" He sings with confidence and pride. But the
second song describes a girl and hence has more
"kuzaivu".
The structure of raga bilahari is:
aarOhaNam: s r g p d s
avarohanam: s n d p m g r s
It is a janyam of shankarabaranam and has mohanam in
the avarohanam. When we hear KJY sing "nam dham dham
dha" at the beginning second charanam, we can hear the
disctinct mohanam flavour and may even be tempted to
sing "poovil vaNdu koodum". Apart from the carnatic
overtones, the song is kind of similar to poomaalai
vaangi vandhaan in the way IR has used the violins for
prelude and in the interludes. A great song not to be
missed by any KJY-IR lover.

bb,
Several years back, I read somewhere that the following two songs are in pure Bilahari:
1. Machchaan veedu machchu veedu, parisam pOttadhu maadi veedu, aattamaadi paattup paadi etc., from 'kadal meengaL'(??)
2. A Christian devotional of 1980 vintage, which goes something like: 'aanandamE jayaa jayaa'

Isn't the EIM song "maaman veedu machchu veedu?"
- From: mythila (@ 137.237.13.20)
on: Fri Mar 21 10:04:01 EST 2003
maaman veedu is a parody of 'Raaravenu gopala' classical song in Bilahari for which IR drew a lot of flak from Carnatic puritans.
Balanagamma has some wongderful classical numbers like 'Sangeetham en degam anro' sung by Vani and a lilting melody 'Palli araikkul' by Uma Ramanan

bb- exquisite! However, I must say that BSS too deserves at least a passing mention for her wonderful humming- Violinum Sasirekhavum thaane paattakku ivvolo amarkkalamaana aarambathaye kodukkaraanga!
Balanagamma is a spellbinding fairy tale which first took celluloid adapatation in 1959 in Telugu and was dubbed into Tamizh as well. In 1981, Saruchitra Films with director K Shankar, brought back the story, with Sridevi playing the title role and with Saratbabu, KR Vijaya, Manju Bhargavi and Sudarshan giving adequate support.
And IR made it memorable with his enchanting score- 'Neer kodukka pirandhadhamma'-SJ-PS, 'Sangeetham en deham andro' and 'Manmatha ragangaley'-both VJ, 'Palli araikkul'-Uma Ramanan, 'Unamaiyai kaakkum'-SP Shailaja--all classic creations that have timeless appeal.

Wonderful selection bb, have been listening to this song for the past few days. I have been hunting in vain for the other VJ songs in this album, for quite some time. IR calls this as one of his favourites while commenting that it has "perfect rendition by the singer". The violin interludes are pretty good too as MS has written. A treat to listen to, anyday. In today's TFM, numbers like these are a rarity.
