Song of the Day: thikku theriyaadha kaattil from ??
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thikku.rm
I don't know about the movie of this song, in fact I don't know much about the song itself, except that it has the majestic voice of GNB, singing the famous Bharathiyaar song. GNB (G.N.Balasubramaniam) is one of the all-time greats in carnatic music. He has acted and sung in a few movies in the 1930s and 1940s. All the songs he sung were classical/semi-classical numbers. This song itself is a raagamalikai.
Randor Guy has written an insightful article on GNB in films in sangeetham.com here: http://www.sangeetham.com/moves.htm . As he writes, GNB not only had a great voice, but he was also handsome. He acted in five films only, Sakunthalai being the more famous one.
Sonnadhai Seidhida thaamadhamaa, also sung by GNB, was featured in SOTD earlier.

THIS GNB SONG IS NOT FROM ANY FILM - IT IS A 'THANI-P-PAADAL'. SIMILARLY, 'SONNADHAI SEIDHIDA THAAMADHAMAA' IS ALSO A THANI-P-PAADAL'.

bb,
I don't know anything about this GNB song. But, several years later, in 'iru kOdugaL', naagEsh comes as 'Bharathi meeNdum vandhaal..'! In this office recreation club play, a road side Romeo sings at a girl ' thikku theriyaatha kaattil, unnai thEdi thEdi iLaiththEnE! kattikkarumbE!kaniyamudhE.. unnaik kattith thazhuva manam aavalaanathe' ..... types! Bharathi drives him away with his stick and sings ' kaNNan paattaik kaamugan paadi ooraik keduththaanE! en pEraik keduththaanE!' and gracefully signals at the girl to go away!

A nostalgic one for all old-timers :) As a kid, when I first saw this movie on DD Sun evening in Jan '89, my mom told me to watch out for this song. It seems when the movie was first released in 50s/60s in the village 'kottAi', kids used to enjoy watching the laddus automatically leap into Ghatotkacha's mouth!

Maya Bazar is one of my favourite movies with great songs like this one ,"Nee thane enai ninaithathu".
Savithri (as Maya Vatsala)and Renga Rao simply steal the show.Gemini as Abimanyu and Krishna as NT Ramarao(is it the other way round???),Nambiar as Shakuni ,Ravi Kant s trick photgraphy,a simple love story told with a Puranic background and special fx...I would love to watch it any day.
Magane Arumai Magane ...the famous dialogue by Ghadothgaja s mother was an instant hit with us after we watched this movie in our village Touring talkies.

OISG, I always thought that Savithri and Ranga Rao made a mockery of the movie. Somehow I felt that the initial intention of the movie was not to be a comedy, and their performances made it certain that serious myth-based movies are doomed.

"Mockery" - That was a cruel comment!
How did u get the intital impression/opinion that MB was not-meant-to -be-comedy?
I suggest you look at MB as a "Romantic-comedy with a mythological background"!Now ,that s a new genre and the movie is ONLY one of its kind!
Savithri s performance was nothing short of brilliant.

Srini, you need real player. You can download it from real.com.
OISG, I guess this movie made sure that we wouldn't see serious treatments of mythological subjects. I think it is the kind of difference between reading Mahabharatham through Amar Chitra Katha and reading S.Ramakrishnan's UpapaaNdavam. I think an effort similar to G.V.Iyer's cannot be done in tamil cinema, since we've come to expect myth films to have flashy graphics and laughable scenes.

This song sets of memories of college days. There was an intra university competition held by the pharmacy students and they decidedly left our year (i.e. 3rd year engineering) out of the competition and the reason for that was the huge fight we had in the mess one day. But after coming to know about that we decided that we will get into whatever was competition was left. The only competition that was left was the group dance. Intent on "kalasifying" the entire pharmacy group and the crowd we decided that we will dance to one of the two songs "Paruvame pudhiya paadal paadu" or "kalyana smaiyal saadham" and then by a unanimous vote paruvame song was selected and for 2 1/2 minutes we were jogging all over the stage and making the crowd go bursting into laughter. No guesses to what place we ended up in the competition. As a side note the dance competiotin also had an adjunct fashion show where we presented the "Fashion for the chennai pettai" no guesses for what featured in it too.

In our Neyveli township, where I spent my childhood, there used to be a mayabazaar which used to come and vanish after 5th of every month and I used to get scared to wear the cheap clothes bought from Mayabazaar.
'Aha Inba nilaavinile' is a beautiful mohanam based song with interesting picturization.

That was a good example.BUT you are still unfair to MB!
But the "first Pull" to mythology comes from Amar chitra Katha than thru GV Iyer s efforts.Cho s Mahabahratham (a stupendous effort) shattered many a myth that i had been carrying since childhood after reading Rajaji s Vysar Virundhu ,Karnan ,Abimanyu movies. Now I am wiser but I have lost the focus to tell my son Mahabharatha as a bed time story.
True, with an enormous mythological background we have not been able to come out with better efforts for a screen adaptation like say Ten commandments.Worse news is things like Peter brookes "Mahabharatha" getting coverage in the western media.

Song of the Day: nenjaththil pOraadum eNNangaL from uNarchchigaL.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/nenjathil.rm
- An excellent song by SPB and SJ. The MD for this movie is Shyam, I guess, though Music India Online mentions G.Devarajan. The way SPB sings this song is so different from his later years (especially the part where he hums lala lalala).
- uNarchchigaL was a R.C.Sakthi film, in which Kamal Haasan co-wrote the dialogues.

OISG, when there are so many stories in our mythology, it is sad that none of them are exploited in our movies. When there is such a dearth of good stories in the movies thesedays, why not use themes from myth? Instead, we see travesties with graphics masquerading as mythological movies.
