- Somehow, I was in the mood to listen to this song today. Irreverent, funny, and a good dappaanguththu beat.
- MD: Karthik Raja. Sung by Kamalhaasan and Udit Narayan.
- Someone mentioned in the forum that the guitar piece in this song was similar to the tune of the show Jeopardy.
- The guitar work in this song was by Prasanna. http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/7411.16.52.08.html

bb,NagaS,
In a way, it is better to keep a live thread such as this in the Non permanent mode! Because, I think most people surf thro' the Non permanent threads at least once in a day! (Try comparing this with some of the so called permanent threads, which are dead permanently!)

Kasumela is ingenious. shows the intellectual side of KR to bring a complex melody and structure. KR has style, class, originality, innovative melody structures yet does not show energy in the songs, that is the thing missing. the verve that IR had in over 750 films and ARR had in 7.5 films (atleast). KR can get the verve in "musicals" if he got interested because there the music has to be with the zing (like thumbs up, u see what i mean)

Song of the Day: mEgam karukkuthu from aanandha raagam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/megam.rm
- There is a huge storm forcast here. The skies are black, and clouds are looming. What better occasion then to remember this song? The song fits the mood so well. I've not seen the picturization of this song, and don't know much about the film either. The film also has the songs "oru raagam paadalOdu", "kadalOram" and the ulti sOga song "kanavugaLE".
- MD: IR. Sung by KJY and SJ.
- Notes for the song: http://www.newtfmpage.com/notes/ir/meg_ar.txt
- Singing in the Rain (Mazhai songs): http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/18479.5.html
- There is also a "mEgham karukkudhu" song in kushi.

bb- Ippothaan vasantham varum kaalamnu paadineenga, adhukulla megham karukkutha, mazhai vara paarukthaa?
Ananda Ragam starred Sivakumar, Radha, Sivachandran and others. Eppovo paartha gnaabagam- it was about people in a small fishing hamlet. Sivakumar is washed ashore, Sivachandran takes care of him- Radha is Sivachandran's sister, I think, and the usual follows--
Reg. this song, I think Sivakumar teaches it to Radha, and Radha sings it. I like the place where SJ stumbles, forgetting the lines-'Edho nenjil aasai vandhu--' and KJY comes to her rescue.

I guess during the shooting of Aanada raagam, Muthuraman had heart attack and passed away. Is this film or some other (May be Manidhanin marupakkam)? But I remember very well that it was acted by Sivakumar and Radha. Can any1 confirm?

This is a beautiful duet. The other song from the same film Oru Ragam Padalodu Kadhil Kaetadho...was another memorable IR composition.
Whenever I listen to Megamkarukkudhu, I am reminded of a old Mukesh/Lata hit "Sawan Ka Mahina Pavan Kare Shor" - picturised on Sunil Dutt and Nutan. I believe Anandha Ragam was (somewhat)a remake of this same hindi film (the name of which escapes me right now...but I am sure others here can fill up that blank!)

Naaz- that was Milan, and it was remade in Tamizh by Savithri as 'Praaptham'-1971 stg. herself with Sivaji. The Tamizh equivalent of 'Sawan ka maheena' was 'Sandhanathil nalla vaasam edharkku'( the shor-sor correction became Kaatru-kaathu correction in Tamizh!). The story was based on a theme of reincarnation.
Ananda Ragam was a completely different story. Of course 'Megam karukkuthu'has a similar backdrop of the hero teaching the heroine the song.

Oru doubt..this song has a folkish start like 'maamara thopilla'..(is that IR's voice or GA's?..this starting piece is missing in the link given)..then starts the 'megham karukuthu mazha'..part and then sivakumar stops suddenly seeing radha and radha asks him to continue(shud be SJ's voice for the dialogue) and then sivakumar answers something(here the voice very much resembles SPB's.is that SPB?)..then KJY starts..SJ joins..So totally 4 singers in this song???

AnandaRaagam had melodious numbers even though the film flopped.Oru raagam paadalodu , Kadaloram are in my all time fav list. Megam karukkudu is also a nice one.I esp liked the charanam structure of this song.

Yes, I was aware of the Praptham/Milan (thanks for the name!)connection. Interestingly enough, there was another Milan (Shatrugan and Reena Roy) which also had a reincarnation theme (Kahin Sadiyon Se, Kahin Janmon Se - was another Mukesh solo from this film) and that film too had the same fate - No consummation at the box-office. Milan was a jinx title!
I guess I took the "music lesson" to heart, and the gut. Thanks for setting things right.
Another similarity (scene not story) was between Praptham and Sujatha, where there is a farewell party for "college" students and there was a PS song "Yengirundho Vandha Paravaigale..." Just curious, what was the song in Praptham?
This SOTD thread is a fine place for memory-repair!

Megam Karukudhu has in interesting first interlude. The interlude starts off with an attack note by Santoor followed by violin tremolo. Most people might think it is a single instrument. This phrase is repeated four times followed by a flute and repeated four times again. This is the trick of Raja used in many other films songs later.

To suffer S.Janagi's singing is bad enough, to suffer her dialogue in addition is too much poison in one pill
Just a note to represent the minority regarding this song. Don't mean to spoil anyone's parade.
About the male teaching the female to sing, this is a tired old trick safeguarded by the patriarchy of Indian movies. "Andru oomaip pennalloa" is another one of these songs.

Milan was actually a remake of the telugu film Moogamanasulu which had Nageswararao, Savithri and Jamuna in it. Both the songs (chilaka-silaka was the correction corresponding to shor-sor). The Hindi version still had Jamuna in it and she went on to receive a Filmfare award for her role in Milan.

Milan was a 1967 movie. Wow, interesting to hear that the correction had its own versions for telugu, hindi and tamil too!
