geeth, wasn't Latha seen in the song 'Sirithu vaazha vendum' song too? Quite unfair on her, as the other heroines had great songs- Manjula had 'Lily malarukku kondaattam', she also appeared in 'Nilavu oru pennaagi', though it was a MGR solo. The Thaai/ Malaysian actress featured in 'Pachai kiki muthucharam'. But Chandrakala got the best deal, she appeared in so many songs, and sang in different voices-PS, SJ and LRE- 'Thanga thoniyile', 'Ulagam, azhagu silaigalin', 'Bansaayee'--
Its another story that Latha more than made up in subsequent years!

Ulagam comes in Japan (expo 70)
Aval Oru - Underwater (dream song)
Pachai kizhi - dream song with southeast background ....

Saravanan,
The name of that Asia Pacific actress in USV is Meeta Rungrath (as spelt in Tamil in the titles) / Meeta Rungretta (as spelt in some Tamil magazines those days!).
RMV had mentioned the following two factors as mainly responsible for the making of this Magnum Opus, which was a resounding success :
1. AVM Chettiar, when he gave money for this venture, got a condition recorded viz., that the film should be shot in Expo 70.
2. Manian, who had gone to Japan in advance, for making all the arrangements, kept on sending messages to MGR to give up all his other assignments and rush to Japan fast, which forced MGR to move fast!
Those days, even school boys used to belong to MGR and Sivaji camps! A friend of mine was a hosteller in Trichy and belonged to the Sivaji camp. He had challenged one of his friends that he would never see USV! A true movie buff, he couldn't resist the temptation for long! One day, he told everyone that he is going to see 'annai abhirami' (a KRV film written by Subbu ARumugam) and enjoyed every bit of USV! ('thalaila thundap pOttukkittu padam paarththEn' was his sentence!)
In Madras, corporation tax on posters was suddenly hiked before USV! USV was relaesed at Devi Paradise with hardly any poster support and picked up purely thro' word of mouth publicity! Wow! What a run it had! The simple formula was
' oru sandai, oru paattu, konjam oor suRRik kaattuthal...all over again!' but not one moment of slackness!

Song of the Day: panneeril nanaindhap pookkaL from uyirE unakkaaga.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/panneer.rm
- MD: Laxmikanth - Pyarelal. Sung by S.Janaki. I like the way the song starts, and the distinct feel of the song. This was a Kovaiththambi film, *ing Mohan, Nadhiya, and if I remember correctly, Meesai Murugesh and his quirky instruments.
- "Pallavi illaamal", a good song by SPB in the same film was featured in SOTD earlier.
- LP also scomposed for the movies mangai oru gangai and ragasiya police 100.
- North Indian composers in TFM: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/3972.23.33.57.html

Good choice bb. The song was a chart-topper in its time. Nadiya was one actress who regularly had songs featuring her alone dancing and singing odes to nature. L-P's music is wonderful in this song. Another fantastic 'nature' song that L-P composed was 'Kaalai thendralil eththanai sandhangal'- SJ/Dinesh versions from 'Mangai Oru Gangai'- Nadiya again! L-P had an awesome 'nature' song even in their Hindi 'Hero'- Nindiya se jaagi bahaar--
UU was an adaptation by K Rangaraj, of 'Roman Holiday'. Apart from Mohan and Nadiya, Sujatha was endearing in the role of Mohan's sister.
'Thenoorum raagm naan paadum neram'- also SJ, featuring Sujatha is a lovely lullaby. Other songs were ordinary- 'Kavithaigal varaiyum vizhiyile', 'Kaiyaale unnai thottaal pothum', 'I want to be a rich man'- all SPB-SJ duets, and 'Ododi vilayaadu'-SJ & chorus.

Nice song.. 'Paneeril nanaindha' was easily the best in the movie.. The other songs had the HFM touch to it... particularly 'kaiyaale unnai thottal' looked like a typical HAHK sort of song...There was a short piece 'Uyire Unakkaaga.. edhayum seivene' which was good IMO... Didn't LP score for 'Viduthalai' or was it someone else (hamsalekha)...

I hope someone can answer this.. Was LP deliberately chosen over IR for this movie to prove something??? Was there an attitude with someone that Mohan's movies are hits just because of IR songs and they wanted to prove that point wrong...

Saravanan, can you please throw some light on Nadiya's career..was it like she left to settle in US?

Yes, that was the speculation. IR illaiyel KT illai, and the whole thing grew into something of a media circus for a few months.
However, it was also around the time when "Hindi" MDs were passing through Chennai, choosing a distraction (and more money that came with the HFM status) - hence we had Poo Mazhai Pozhiyudhu scored by RD Burman, Bhappi Lahiri came to Thai Veedu, and LP for the films Saravanan mentions.
Thankfully, it was a phase, as their music (like current singing) seemed a tad alien culturally, and
HFM was always their mainstay anyway.
Viduthalai was scored by Chandrabose, I think. Hamsalekha scored Paruva Ragam and some other BR films.

This is good choice for early spring...Where I am, there is host panneeril nanaindha pookkal just outside the window...and the song gives me a "paatondru kataen" (radio programme in chennai vividh bharati) feeling!
Thanks for the memories.

Prabhu, this is what Saravanan wrote a while ago:
Mannukkul Vairam was a Kovaithambi’s’ ‘Motherland’ venture. Kovaithambi, who had struck gold repeatedly with IR (Payanangal Mudivathillai, Ilamai Kaalangal, Naan Paadum Paadal, Unnai Naan Sandhithen, Udhayageetham), fell out with IR after Idhayakoyil and brought in VS Narasimhan for Aayiram Pookal Malarattum and Lakshimikanth Pyarelal for Uyire Unakkaga. His next experiment was with Devendran for Mannukkul Vairam-1986.
Naaz, yes, the spring is here, and that's why I was humming this song yesterday. Glad you liked it.

Thanks prabhu & bb...
I remember another Kovai Thambi venture 'Unnai vaazthi paadugiren' starring Parthiban... The music was scored by IR and I guess it came in the early 90s... There were good songs like 'oh ho ho Kaalai kuyilgale ' and 'oru malai chandhiran'(by minmini)... Was there any other KT-IR venture before or after that???

Nobody could have sung this better than SJ. This song was a good alternative to IR's tirade in 80's.

Song of the Day: Erikkaraiyin mElE from muthalaaLi.

- MD: KVM. Sung by TMS. *ed S.S.R with a cycle and dhoLa dhoLa pants. The film was directed by Muktha Srinivasan. Saravanan has written in detail about Muktha Srinivasan here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/15502.6859.02.29.28.html
- Raagam Arabhi. TMS has sung it at such a high pitch that it looks like song tailor made for MKT.
- Paattum Naaney Baavamum Naaney - TMS - http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/20294.7189.02:24:31.html
- Manisegaran writes on this film:
MUDALAI (1957)
This is a M.A. Venu Pictures directed by Mukta Seenivasan. Mukta R. Seenivasan himself has said in an interview that the film was a low budget movie taken with a budding actress Devika and an upcoming actor S.S. Rajendran. But the movie was completely salvaged by KVM’s music. According to Mukta Seenivasan this movie was a great success in those days:
There is a solo by Jikki YAVVANNA RAANITHAAN
M.S. Rajeswary gives this solo: ENGIRUNTHO VANTHAAR EN ITHAYAM KAVARNTHAAR-
EN VAAZHVIL NAAN KANDA MIGA NALLAVAR
There is a duet by T.M.S and M.S. Rajeswary -KUNGUMA POTTUKKAARA KONA KIRAPPUKKAARA
Rathnamala and G. Kasthuri sing this song: SIKKANAMA VAAZHANUM SERTHU VAIKKA PAZHAGANUM
The all time popular song of TMS is:
ERIKKARAYIN MELE
PORAVALE PON MAYILE
ENNARUMAI KAATHALIYE
ENNAI KONJAM PAARU NEEYE
ANNAM POLA NADAI NADANTHU
SENDRIDUM MAYILE
AASAI THEERA NILLU KONJAM
PESUVOM KUYILE
THENNAI MARACHOLAIYILE
CHITTU POLE PORA PENNE
CHITTU POLE PORA PENNE
NILLU KONJAM NAANUM VAAREN
SERNTHU PESI POVOM KANNE
ANNAM POLE NADAI NADANTHU SENDRIDUM MAYILE
AASAI THEERA NILLU KNOJAM PESUVOM KUYILE
MAAMARA THOPPINILE
MACHAAN VARUM VELAYILE
KOBAM KONDA MAANAI POLE
ODALAMO PEN MAYILE
ANNAM POLE NADAI NADANTHU SENDRIDUM MAYILE
AASAI THEERA NILLU KNOJAM PESUVOM KUYILE
M.S. Rajeswary sings another song:
AASAI KALYANAM-NALLA ANBU KALYANAM
Seergazhi Govindarajan comes with a solo:
KAALAMADI KAALAM KALI KAALAMADI KAALAM
There is a group song by Sundram, Ponnusamy, Ratnamala, and Kasthuri:
ENGA MUTHALALI THANGA MUTHALI
EZHAIGALIN THUYARAI NEEKUM NALLA MUDALAALI
This is a simple film that became a hit on account of the good songs and the storyline of an employer supporting the working society.

I believe this song is an ISI-mark concert-standard Arabhi. I remember seeing it in OLiyum Oliyum (or was it Oliyum OLiyum?) at least a couple of times.
