Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.

OISG, also Govardhanam was the brother of Sudharsanam.
sk, swarakutti seems more derogatory than appreciative :-)

bb:
'kutti' came in with the title because RG was a small boy when he got the title from the famous Nadhaswaram Rajarathinam Pillai. This is what vAmanan writes...
Even as a small boy RG used to accompany his elder brother R Sudarsanam to all music related programmes. In 1938 RS introduced RG to RP saying: "ivan en thambi. enna pAdinAlum swarangaLai appadiyE solli viduvAn." RP said: "nAn vAsikkiRadhai swaram solla mudiyumaa?" RG nodded. RP took his nAdhaswaram and played a complex tune in thOdi. With a paper and pen ready, RG wrote online all the swaras. RP looked at it, wondered at his brilliance and said to RS: "sAmAniyan illEdA ivan; ivanukku 'swarakkutti'nnu pEr vaiyungadA." RG was only 10 years old when this happened.

One more info. jAthakam (1953) was also the first movie for RG as MD. But the tune for mooda nambikkaiyAlE (the first song of PBS) was lifted from a Hindi tune (yE zindagi kE mElE sung by Md.Rafi in kismat).

Are you sure that 'Malar pol sirippathu' was perhaps the first song that VJ sang for MSV? so far I have been thinking that "malligai enna mannan mayangum" was VJ-MSV first song... :-)

Song of the Day: udhaya udhaya from udhaya.

- MD: ARR. Sung by Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam.
- Thread on Udhaya: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/29101.07.11.38.html
- From RajaG:
Just for the record, despite some areas of SS's pronunciation, Udhaya Udhaya uLarugirEn is one of the best melodies of recent times. And the sangathis by SS and HH are awesome and almost non-reproduceable by amateur talents (including your's truly :-) )

bb- Good song by ARR. Thanks. Btw, is Udhaya the film in which TN Seshan was supposed to act?
Subbu, though it is generally thought that 'Malligai' was VJ's first song for MSV, it isn't so.
sk- 'Sindhanai yen selvame' is a slow, philosophical song, giving the message that it always seems darkest just before dawn, and hence one musn't give up hope. It goes like : Sindhanai yaen selvamey, manam nondhu un kanngalil neer kalangida, veen sindhanai yaen selvame---
Feelingly rendered by PBS. I would rate it better than 'Mooda nambikkaiyaaley'.
Btw, have you heard another early PBS gem- 'Anbodu inbamaaga vaazhalaam nanbane, ennaale nee, unaale naan' ? It is from the film Viduthalai-1954, MD- Lakshman Raghunath & Khelkar (wonder who they were and which other films they composed for?)Viduthalai had another enchanting song 'Inithaana thendral' sung by Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi-among her early songs. Her voice is incredibly sweet in this song.

OISG- Apart from 'Paasamalarey', TMS sang another song too in Neethipathi- 'Thandhai naan ingey'.
GA's 100th film as MD was 'En Thangachi Padichava-1988, in which TMS, KJY, SPB, JC and MV all had songs.
TMS's song was 'Ethirkaalam nam peyar ezhuthum'
Reg. R Govardhanam, I'll cut & paste from VJ's chronolgy:
"R Govardhanam is the immensely talented younger brother of the late R Sudharsanam, the veteran MD. He initially assisted CR Subburaman, and later his brother Sudharsanam. He was the conductor in the orchestra of MSV-TKR during 1960-65, and continued in the same post for MSV till 1970. He has assisted Illayaraja, Vijayabhaskar Chandrabose and Deva, performing the roles of a Conductor and Arranger.
In the meantime, he did the music for the few films that came his way- and all of them had excellent songs: Jaadhagam (1953- in which PBS sang his first tamizh song), Orey Vazhi-1959, Kairasi-1960, Pattanathil Bhoodham-1967, Poovum Pottum-1968, Anjal Petti 520 and Porchilai-both 1969 and Varaprasadham-1976. All the films are remembered to this day for their enchanting songs"
OISG- I'm sure you'll remember this, as it was immediatly following this that we both had an argument as to who sang 'Engirundhu paarthaalum vaanam ondruthaan'! (I still maintain that it was TMS :)
Many of R Govardhanam's songs are unforgettable.
He was so astute in picking on TS Bagavathi to sing the song 'Vanna medaiyil' in Orey Vazhi. Her voice, with its perennial tinge of melancholy was just what the song needed. Again when the voices of TSB and PS come one after the other in 'Paalinum theninum'-Kairasi- the song is lifted to greater levels. RG was the first MD to use KJY for a devotional song- 'Sri MahaGanapathey' in Porchilai is an awe-inspiring creation. Again LRE was just what 'Paththu padhinaaru muththam muththam' needed. The few films that RG composed for will bespeak his name forever.

bb: what a pleasant surprise? I am honored and thankful for this SOTD.
ARR's piano touches, Charukesi overflow, HH's and SS's singing (SS sounds a lot like Swarnalata in this song) - a great song from ARR (IMNSHO long overdue :-) :-))

MGR was at 1st sceptical of using a then newbie sp bala by m.s. visvanathan when TMS was THE singer for mgr, he was so impressed by sp bala's rendition of ayiram niliavey vaa from adimai penn, that he used him for this..

Evolution Vii, its mentioned in earlier threads (MGR related) that it was MGR who pushed SPB to sing for him. For the Adimai Penn song, to get back at TMS, he waited for SPB to recover from a flu and then recorded the Aayiram Nilave song (MD: KVM). it definitely impressed and his next own production USV came the above SOTD song.
this song was shot underwater (dream song) and is the only song with Latha in the movie. to start this song the situation scene was - Latha coming out of the bathroom wiping her hair and the dream starts as if both she and MGR are underwater. another nostalgic recollection.
