Harris and Saravanan:
Thanks for the info on PBS' last song.
I was just listening to PBS' first TFM song from the movie, jAthakam. It starts as 'mooda nambikkaiyAlE pala kEdu viLaiyum manidhA'. The early days voice of PBS is nice to hear. I think his voice changed somewhat in the 60's.

Song of the Day: sollaththaan ninaikkirEn from sollaththaan ninaikkirEn.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sollathaan.rm
- MD: MSV. Sung by MSV, SJ. The setting is that of three sisters, two of them in love with the hero, but he is in love with the third sister. The song wonderfully captures the mood and the yearning of the sisters.
- Lyrics by Vaali. The lyrics is very good, especially the line
"kaadhal enbadhu mazhaiyaanaal
avaL kaNgaL thaanE kaarmEgam
..
kaatril midhakkum pugai pOlE
avan kanavil midhakkum ninaivugaLE
maNa veedu avan thani veedu

What a song!
The only thing that marred this great song was MSV's kara-kara voice. In fact, KB used this song in Parthale Paravasam (as he is wont to do) but surprisingly used SP Bala's cover version!
(SPB has done a cover version of songs not sung by him.)
In the beginning, MSV's voice was reasonably good as evident in the song Paar magale paar (the title song, not the TMS one). In fact his Nee ninaithaal innerathile ethetho nadakkum (Nilave Nee Saatchi) was really passionate and tantalising.
His Allah Allah (Mohamed bin Tuqlaq), Orey kelvi unnai ketppen (Mr. Sampath), Etharkkum oru kaalamundu (Sivakamiyin Selvan) and Illaatha porul meethu (Akkarai Pachai) were listenable.
But soon enough, it was all the downhill for him (voice only!) - Enakoru kaathali irukkindraal (Muthaana Muthalavo), Enakoru vidivelli (Keezhvaanam Sivakkum), the SOTD, Uppai thinavan (1 kodiyil 2 malargal) and Aayiram ponnai (Avan oru Sarithiram).
But apparently there are people who like his voice as even IR and ARR have invited him to sing for them! :)

Screen adaptation of Manian s "Ilavu Kaatha KiLi".Subha (RajaNagham fame),Srividya and Jayachitra played the 3 sisters. All 3 vie for Sivakumar,(called Hero Sir!) their tenant, but in the end all 3 fail.Kamal plays a playboy.(with a thongu meesai, eversilver swastik chain...he looked more like a busstand rowdy!)
Pallavi ondru mannan ketka (SJ PS)(subha s stammer and Srividya s support during this song was well picturised)
Malar pol siripathu ( VJ)
Kalayanam Kutcheri (SPB -LRE)
are the other songs. But this one was a winner. The solo violin amplifies the viragam. (aasai ponguthu paal pole, avan Anal pol paarkum paarvayile)the picturisation in slow motion was apt.
JC s " Kamalalakka !Dotto doiingggg" was like "Ethu eppadi irukku" of 16 vayathinle. Some of the dialogues were witty and catchy.
Kamal (to JC) : "Theeyavane ,thirumbi Paar nnu solla vanthirukkaya?"
JC : "Porukki payale,Palla udapenda nnu solla vanthrukken"
A great song in a decent movie!

BTW, a request for SOTD - I saw the movie 'thiyaagam' in some movie channel last week and liked the 'nallavarkkellaam saatchigaL reNdu' song very much - donno who is the lyricst, But the song very well suits the movie situation and some of the lines ('ThavaRukku thuNintha manithan azuvathillaiyee', 'Nambikkaiyodu kallaiyum paarththaal dheyvaththin kaatchiyamma') are very good and memorable. (MD could be IR, I missed the title !)

A great song seq of "aahaa sollathaan ninaikirean".... During those days in mid 70's, the slow motion picturisation had started. I guess this was the pioneer.
Among 3 sisters, Shubha was bowled in the early innings due to her inferiority complex of having stammering. Then Srividhya too, takes a back seat after she realised that she is not Siva's fav. JC still had chance, but she spoils herself to save her friend Jayasudha. This 3-2-1 was clearly picturised in the slow motion seq, that Shubha falls down early, followed by Srividhya and JC taking the further lead. Wonderful thoughts by KB, the one and one director with lots of imagination.
Just watched "Sindhu Bhairavi Part II" y'day. The same old "Iru kodugaL" KB still lives in that :-)

sk- in the same film Jaathagam(1953. MD-R Govardhanam), there is another haunting PBS solo: 'Sindhanai yen selvame'.
OISG- to the best of my knowledge, TMS's latest song in tfm is from 'Gynana Paravai'-1991 (Stg-Sivaji & Manorama) MD-MSV. 'Neeyum naanuma Aachi', and 'Aanavam kollathey' were the two songs.

bb- thanks for this great song. I think MSV's voice was apt for this asareeri, and it is among the very few full-fledged duets sung by him. SJ is captivating, her expressions capturing the mood wonderfully (Kodhitha manam konjum kulirum vidham, avan anaipaano--)
SN is among the very few films in which the 4 great female voices of tfm-SJ,PS,VJ and LRE had songs. The other two films I can think of are Thirukkalyanam (1978-MD-IR) and Ninaithaale Inikkum (1979-MD-MSV). And 'Malar pol sirippathu' was perhaps the first song that VJ sang for MSV.
SJ again was brilliant for the stammering Subha in 'Pallavi endru'
The song set me thinking on KB's choice of lyricists. In his films with V Kumar, he always used many lyricists, the chief among them being Vaali.( Others- Alangudi Somu-Neerkumizhi, Naanal, Pathaam Pasali, Suradha: Neerkumizhi, Naanal, Major Chandrakanth) But in all his films with MSV, the songs were by only Kannadasan, till the latter's demise. Sollathaan Ninaikkiren was perhaps the only exception, the film had music by MSV, but lyrics by Vaali. To make up for this, Arangretram, released in the same year (1973) had music by V Kumar, and lyrics by Kannadasan!
(Another exception, in MSV's music, much later, was 'Kannana poo magane' by Vairamuthu in Thanneer Thanneer-1981). Of course, after Kannadasan's death, KB went to Vaali for Poikaal Kuthirai and Agnisaatchi. Beginning with Achamillai Achamillai-1984, he switched to Vairamuthu exclusively till Punnagai Mannan-1986. Then back to Vaali in Manathil Urudhi Vendum (due to IR-VM tiff) Muthulingam, Gangaiamaran and Pulamaipithan wrote for Unnal Mudiyum Thambi-1988. Back to Vaali for Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal-1989. Pulamaipithan wrote all the songs in Azhagan-1991. Back to Vairamuthu for Vaaname Ellai-1992, Jaathimalli-1993 and Duet-1994. Ilandevan was the lyricist for Kalki-1996. Vaali, Vairamuthu and Muthukumar shared the honours in Paarthaale Paravasam.

Saravanan,
In some other thread, OISG (I think!) had said that ' thaNNeer vandha pinbu maaRum engaL kaNNeer' in 'thaNNeer thaNNeer' was also by VM (perhaps because Kannadasan was too ill or had already passed away in the US after writing some songs for the film)

1953 -Govardhanam? Not Sudarsanam? If so when did RG moved to MSV-TKR as associate?Atleast you see his name from 1960 onwards in the titles.
KB kku yaarum kidaikalenna "Bharathiyar" paatu potruvar! On "thanner" I still believe that it has VM s mark than KD s ("Pongal vangi thinnuputtu sami enga pochudoi!-)
**Dig**
KD was always subtle when reprimanding/teasing God
Kadavul seitha kutramadi
Kadavu lmanithnaga pirakka vendum
Deivangal ellam unakkaga paadum paadamal ponal ethu deivamagum
etc..
VM OTOH preferred an open battle.
His first pallavi for "Uruvangal Maralam" MSV s song was
"thavaru seitha aandavanai dhandikka vendum-en
Kannil innum eeramillai -Kandikka vendum"
MSV & MD SV Ramanan felt that it was too strong and VM had to pitch down saying
"aandavane unnai vanthu sandhikka vendum -naan
seitha paavan ennavendru sindhikka vendum"
***End Dig**
Is there a TMS song in GA s music in 1980s apart from "paasamalare"?

Saravanan:
Thanks for info on the other PBS song from jAthakam. But I have not heard it. I will send 'mooda nambikkaiyAlE' to bb so that he can make it available in dhooL.
OISG:
Govardhanam came into TFM very early because of his exceptional talent. (I read that he is one of those who can convert (online) to swaras any song that is sung to him. He was known as 'swarakutti'.) He was even an assistant to CRS together with MSV, TKR and Ghantasala. So no wonder that he composed music for a movie as early as 1953. Also, Govardhanam is a few years older than MSV. Over his 50+ years TFM career, he worked mostly as an assistant. If you track his career carefully, any MD who had him as an assistant did extremely well during the period when he was associated with that MD. (Sudarsanam, CRS, MSV-TKR, MSV, IR and then Deva + others) For example, he was assistant to VR from the late 50's till they parted; then he was with MSV till 1971 or so. (I have heard that when Karthik Raja did his first movie, RG was requested to come and work as assistant.) Sadly, he could not be his own assistant and so he himself could not shine as an MD. This failure must have been due to extraneous reasons. All the movies he did had great songs. I recently saw poovum pottum and pattaNaththil bootham; wonderful songs! Even VR have modified and used some of his tunes. (Example: kAdhalenum AtrinilE of kairAsi was turned into neelap pattAdai katti of veeraththirumagan.) Like KVM, Govardhanam also strictly followed the principle of lyrics-first-tune-later. I feel Govardhanam did not get as much credit in TFM as he actually deserved. I am sure Saravanan will have lot more materials to add abour RG.
