I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I checked chennaionline. It seems like they haven't yet posted the transcript of the previous interview (with MD Imman) conducted on 16th Oct. We might have to wait for our (VJ's) turn :((

Today I revisited some of the earlier downloads from the now silent website. I had the good sense to save most of the solo files...
And as a random pick I clicked on Mayagugiraal Oru Maadhu -
Sugam Aayiram En Ninaivile
Ilamaiyin Kanavu Malarum Valarum Uravile...
Put me in touch with so many dormant and forgotten
feelings. Like a spring finally breaking through the forest floor, living joy all through its new journey...
VJ sings the song with so many laden secrets, half-said and half-imagined. The hush of "sugam" finds an illicit accomplice in "ragasiyam" - and how the song tingles!
Others in this procession of longings and yearnings and lustful churnings include
"Kaviyam Paada Nayagan Engey" - the turn on Paada the second time around is signature VJ. And that one word - Aayiram - a whisper, a rapture, a lingering history of a thousand desires.
The chorus is used to embellish the song, not overpower it. The melding voices, gentle oars down a gushing stream.
I must make a point of listening to the many not listened-to-in-a-long-time solos. It sure bouyed my spirit today!

Revisit of the day:
Konjum Malarmanjam Adhil Thanjam Iru Nenjam...
A scintillating duet by VJ-SPB from Janani. MD: MSV.
The stanza which begins:
Naan Aada Endhan Manichchadhangai Aadum
there is this wonderful metaphor:
Idaienna Iraivana...
Woah! :-)
There is a similarity (possibly only in my hearing) with another VJ-SPB duet composed by SG:
Ilagigal Meedhum Malargal Meedhum Pani Vizhum Kaalam...
And, interestingly, there is another stellar "bodily" moment in this song, captured with great poetic acumen:
Chinna Idaiyai Thedum
Idhazai Thedum
Manivizhi Neelam...
An observation about an observation...lateral thinking and sinking-na idhu thaan! :-)
Prabhu:
I don't think the transcript is up yet. I notice that some of the COL celeb interviews don't have transcripts, just session photos. Hope they don't do this with the VJ chat!

Vani Jayaram was a great singer but luck was not on her side. In fact she was greater than Latha Mangeskar in voice modulation. Her Hindi songs are memorable. But the Hindiwalahs saw that she did not make a footing in Bolly wood - perhaps Mooly wood , because Bombay is now Mumbai!

All,
I went to chennaionline today looking for the chat transcript. I happened to see the link "Song clip" that I had probably overlooked before. I thought it was probably a 90-second clip of "malligai en mannan" or "ezhu swarangalukkul". I played it. Was I caught by surprise!
If you haven't listened to it already click on the link.

That has got to be the single greatest audio file of VJ ever!! great find, Neel. 10 minutes of undistilled, unplugged bliss.
Since no such prior recording exists to our (my) knowledge, I'd assume that they made this during the chat session. If so, then, current MDs - wake up!! Arise, awake to this great ageless singer who remains unforgivably forgotten.

Thanks for the prompt. I just checked the song clips. A perfect antidote to a long day of typing and other mundane things. VJ ends the medley with a truly appropriate song. An inspired choice from among so many stellar songs. I am overjoyed when she sang a few lines from Amarakaviyam - Idhayam Pesinal Unnidam Aayiram Pesumo...The clips were thoughtful and ordered with an eye to imagistic progression.
All of which made me tick off that still to find solos list:
Thayakki Vachcha En Thangame
Ungal Padhaththil Indha Neraththil
Amma Undhan Kaivalai Aagamattaena
The other song from Orey Vaanam Orey Bhoomi (have never heard it.)
The Balanagamma Solos...
Hope you and ramarao can provide these whenever you find them.

Neel/Naaz- I am not able to listen to it--When I click on 'Song clip' a windows Media Player screen pops up, but it doesn't play:(
What are the songs that the medley comprises of?
- From: Naaz (@ 24.87.30.219)
on: Wed Nov 12 09:45:56 EST 2003
Saravanan -
The songs include: Malligai En Mannan, Ezhuswarangalukkul, Ninaivale Silai Seidhu, Andhamanai Parungal Azhagu, Orey Naal Unnai Naan, Meghame Meghame, Brocheva, Bol Re Papi Hara, Kiliye Kili Kiliye, O Priyatama, a bengali song, Malligai Mullai Pooppandhal, Naan Unna Nenachchen, Idhayam Pesinal Unnidam, Aayriam Aandugal Aayiram Piravigal...
(I might have missed a song or two...others can add them if that is the case.)
It was, as sriram says, a wonderful "unplugged" medley that went on for about 10.09 minutes...and VJ executed some fine transitions within the compilation. How sad to see a superlative singer like her (who can still carry a tune with aplomb and finesse) and realise how she is wasted on an un(der)appreciative tamil/indian public!
(Ok, where's that meeting write-up, Saravanan? This is perhaps the last time I will mention this. Of course, you have to consider it worthy of a summary in the first place.)

I've listened to the "Just VJ" medley (no accompaniment absolutely) about half a dozen times now. Although the songs are all familiar and well-known, it is such a rarity to hear a sing the same song with their own reworkings. VJ brings an "original" touch to some of the songs in this medley - Malligai Mullai Poopandhal - the ending with "kalyanam adharkkaga" is a different fade-out from the soundtrack. Similarly, the song Idhayam Pesinal...she drops her voice (even in this impromptu session) to a whisper when she sings "Mouname Podhumo." A nice touch, just like somebody sharing a secret in the dark. Brocheva - the swarasancharam is lovely to listen to (of course, the original is frenetic in pace) with VJ modulating her voice in typical karnatak fashion.
The last song in the medley - Aayiram Aandugal - has a great moment in just the prolonged "naan" in the line "aruginil irundhida vaendugiraen..." Class act that gets only better with age! :-)

Meeting Greatness- Part 1
“I have been waiting for your call” said the voice at the other end—a voice that I have grown up listening and admiring—and I was speechless with joy at the warmth of the tone, and overwhelmed by the thought that I was actually speaking with a legend, and choked with emotion at the thought that she was actually looking forward to my call!
But let me start at the rightful beginning, and the beginning was made by Naaz. When he knew that I was going to Chennai, he wrote to me suggesting that I should meet VJ, and before that I should mail her a few extracts from the chronology, as she had heard of it, and was eager to read it. I admit I didn’t take him seriously then, as I wasn’t sure that a celebrity would have time to spend with an ordinary fan, but I did post some extracts from the chronology, more out of –er—respect for Naaz ;)). And I didn’t think it probable that she may find the chronology very interesting, either. ( How wrong I was on both counts I would discover later--)
Some weeks went by, and Naaz wrote to me again, informing me that my post hadn’t reached VJ, and she was disappointed about it. It was then too late for me to send it again, and so I reached Chennai as scheduled on 26th September. And in a couple of days, we went to Ooty where we spent a blissful 10 days. And immediately on reaching Chennai, I had to go to Trichy. Coming back to Chennai, I did call VJ, but the ring went unanswered. I tried again a few days later, and I heard her pick up the phone, and no sooner than I introduced myself, she uttered those words—words that keep ringing in my ears to this day.
“What took you so long to call” she admonished me gently next. After my stammered explanations, she gave an amused laugh and the said “Jairamji and I are waiting to meet you. Ameen ( Naaz) has said so much about you, that we are eagerly looking forward to see you”. This was Thursday, 16th October, and I suggested Saturday, the 18th, and she invited me over at 3 in the afternoon.
Earlier, I had contacted Suresh. Subsequently he came home- we had a nice long chat. I must tell you all about him. There are some people you feel you’ve known all your life even at the first meeting, and Suresh is one of them. He is so friendly, simple and cheerful that you just have to become his friend at once! We kept meeting and also speaking over the phone regularly after that. When I mentioned to him that I was going to meet VJ, he too evinced a keen interest to meet her. I was only too happy—though I was jumping with joy at the thought of meeting VJ, I was also a little apprehensive – “what if she starts talking about tumris and abangs- won’t she think I’m a frightful ignoramus” was my secret fear. And since Suresh is well versed in all kinds of music ( you should hear some of the CDs he plays in his car!), I was secretly relieved.
Then I contacted Naaz and told him of the scheduled meeting and also that Suresh too was coming.
Finally on 18th morning, I called up VJ ( ‘Please confirm that you’re coming, call at 8 in the morning’, she had said), and I confirmed that I’ll come at 3 and asked her if another fan called Suresh can come too. “Of course, please tell Sureshji that I’ll be glad to meet him” was the gracious answer. Within two minutes my cell rang- it was VJ “ Saravanan, I just wanted to tell you not fix any other engagement at 3.30 or something—I would like to have a long, leisurely chat with you” she said. I was again rendered speechless, ( Karumbu thinna kooliyaa- I asked myself!)
Earlier I had told Suresh how the extracts that I had mailed never reached her ( VJ herself told me this over the phone ). The day before, I asked Suresh if it would be possible for him to take print-outs of some parts of the chronology from the website and bring them along when we meet her, and he agreed. He came, as scheduled, at 2.40 to pick me up. And as soon as I sat in the car, he said “And here’s the bible” and handed me a beautifully bound book, and I could only gasp in surprise when I saw that he had printed out the entire chronology from the beginning, given it titles, sub-titles and page numbers ( it came to nearly 200 pages!!!!!- never realized it was so large!) –it looked so grand, that I was overcome with emotion. Suresh, as is his wont, brushed off my incoherent thanks--

Hi all!
First, I am sorry that it took so long for me to write this. I know no excuse can support this delay. Naaz- kochikkatheenga, please!
I have not been keeping well since returning ( the pangs of leaving Chennai might have had something to do with it, I suspect). Added to that there was too much to catch up with at work. More importantly, Suresh had said he would write about it, and since he would have definitely done a better job, I was waiting for him.
I guess he too is busy with work, and seeing Naaz's post today, I have hurriedly written this. Will continue in a day or two. It was a great experience, and a meeting that I would cherish forever.
My sincere apologies, once again!
