I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Happy Diwali all!
Suresh and yours truly had a great meeting with VJ a few days back, thanks to Naaz. She is an amazing person. Suresh will write all about it in detail soon.

There is no need to thank me. I was merely a catalyst in bringing together an ardent connoisseur and a consummate artiste - face to face. I hope VJ has read your chronology?
I look forward to both - your and suresh's - commentaries on the meeting. I would have given anything (almost) to be a fly on the wall for this one! :-)
Don't keep us waiting for too long!

Rasaathi Rosakili had a "Pei" song by MVD and VJ. I goes like this:
Theem tha naka theem..Theem tha naka theem
En vazhvil vasanthangal varumo..
Illai edhikaalam kanavaagi vidumoo..

Neel D -
Thanks for the multilingual bouquet! A great tribute to the many-mouthed and melifluous songbird VJ!
I really loved the Kannada solo: Inde Savi Samaya. The opening was delicious, and the song had a nice lilt to it. Ponnalaiyil - the malayalam duet with KJY was charming and fleeting. VJ-KJY have some fine duets with SC. I am happy to have discovered this new (old) song.
Praanam Praanam - a characteristic Ramesh Naidu creation. I could even follow the lyrics in this one (more or less) and really enjoyed the song more for this joining together of images with my rudimentary grasp of Telugu. Life, a sky, and love the star in it, unique and recurring as the lunar and solar eclipse, habitual as the amavasam every month! (how's that?:-) I could go on!! The "prema, prema" echo effect was typical early 80s! The overlay awkward and exotic - all defined by the age of the song! SPB is smooth (of course) and VJ shines as well. I like the way she says "aariponidhi tharadeepam." The line glows!
Hari Bin Kaise Jiyoon Ri. What can one say? Meera Bai - Vani Jairam. Divine Purity.
Bhoomiyil Dhusta - Just listen to one word in this to experience what enunciation is all about: Achchutha. Supplication and Beseeching - not in shame, but in hope! Great composition and flawless rendition.
There's nothing like Deepavali where I am. But these songs are all sparklers - and how bright the day is already! :-)
Priya -
I've heard the song you mention. Wish I could hear it again - I only vaguely recall the tune.

Here is the third stanza from "azagAna iLamanggai kattil koduththAL". This is missing in the CD but is present in the film. Please correct if I have gotten some of the words wrong. The audio was very bad in the VHS tape I watched.

Neel D -
I was not aware of a third stanza in this song! But I've noticed that many such compilations omit 3rd stanzas for "quantity" purposes (short(ened) songs = more songs?). Even a matchless classic like Ezhuswarangalukkul has a brush with this axe (at least in the compilation of VJ solos I have - put out by HMV, this seems to be the case.)
Wondering if you'll have a song file for this duet:
Rajathi Rajanukku Rani Mele Kadhaladi...
(Film? Rakthapasam? Viswaroopam? LD RK? Some Sivaji film for sure?)
It is fine duet by VJ-TMS. MD is MSV, I believe.
Don't tell me you had this song all along at the website, and 'twas me that didn't pay attention!

Naaz, Rajaathi is from Viswaroopam. It also has a decent TMs solo:"Naan Patta kadan" plus probably other songs I do not remember.
BTW, do you recall a TMS-VJ duet in a film called "Nenjukku Needi"? I vaguely remebera classical number and a somewhat unusual melody.

Thanks for reminding me of Naan Patta Kandan. Yes, now I can hear the song! Isn't there a slight "saayal" of Vanjikkodi Sonna Mozhi Enna Mozhiyo in the first bars of NPK?
The Nenjukku Needhi song does not come to mind immediately. There are so many lost songs inside and outside my head...I hope somebody else can name the song you mention. But, thinking of NN, I was taken to another VJ-TMS duet from Sandhippu -
"Varththai Naanadi Kannamma, Varna Mettu Neethan En Chellamma..." Heard this?

Sorry for the blooper (if it is one):
Should that be Vannakkili? not Vanjikkodi (adhaiyum kaettu enthanaiyo naalachchu!)

Yes, that was a blooper:
Vannakkili Sonna Mozhi Enna Mozhiyo?
Vanji Magal Vaai Thirandhu Sonna Mozhiyo?
right-aa?

Saravanan. welcome back. Hopefully when you settle down after you get through the jet lag and stuff, may be you can "karuna kaattify" on us and write a nice little summary about the meeting with Vani. Must have been good. I wish I were there when this happened. This time I have taken the charge to bug you:-)

And, welcome back! :-)

I couln't make it to the chat session. Did anyone participate?

on: Mon Nov 3 11:18:12 EST 2003
Naaz/ Neel, I could log on, but couldn't participate. I tried, but my question never went through :(
The questions were varied--like her favorite MDs,Guddi having one of Lata's old songs, her opinion of current day singers, her favorites in western music, why she didn't get as many songs as SJ or PS, her thoughts on 'Megame megame', her works with IR, her advice to aspiring singers, why she doesn't attempt a full-fledged Carnatic Cutcheri, the single song she sang for ARR and so on--VJ's responses were succint and heartwarming.
Hope chennaionline comes out with the transcripts soon.
