"Kaakha Kaakha"- A superhit!
Wednesday, 06 August , 2003, 21:05
By Moviebuzz
Surya has finally had the biggest hit in his career. The film had a fantastic opening all over Tamilnadu and has grossed an unbelievable Rs 3.25 crore in its opening weekend (Friday to Sunday) from 106 screens.
The collection of the film has not dropped till Tuesday and according to its producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu, the film is likely to gross Rs 5-6 crore in the first week. This means that the distributor will get a share of Rs 2.4 to 2.8 crore!
Said a beaming Thanu: “Kaakha Kaakha is like Kurinji poo that flowers once in 12 years for me! In my 18 years of being a producer, I have never had such a big hit”. According to estimates the film will get a distributors share of Rs 15 crore by the end of six months!
At Devi theatre in Chennai, youngsters are crowding the aisle and dancing to the tunes of “Uyirin Uyire…”, the introductory song in the film. In Mayajaal multiplex, the management was forced to start a late night show due to the crowds for the first time. In Madurai area, the film collected a distributors share of Rs 15 lakhs in three theatres, which is a new record!
Amazing! is the only word to describe the collections of this film. Hats off to Gautam Menon and Surya.

Jag,
that was a question i had been asking these guys over and again. how far has ARR taken tamil culture or tamil music to other places. they dont answer to this. jus bcos ARR is by birth a tamilian we cant appreciate him for his achievements. sure his achievements r notable but there is nothing for tamilians to be proud of ARR.
while IR on the other hand is trying to take tamil cultural music wherever possible.
a famous magazine DEVI's[ this magazine is frm the dinathanthi group and sells nxt to kumudam and anandavikatan] this week edition asks tamilians not to listen to ARR's music anymore.

"there is nothing for tamilians to be proud of ARR"
come on ..rajasaranam..Tamilians and Indians should be proud of ARR. It is like saying Einsteing is the real genius scientist and every other scientist is no good.
As a fan of IR's music, I am disappointed he did not get his due recognition. For that, we should do our best to support him (like Thiruvaasagam in Symphony etc) but not put down ARR.
Yeah, it is annoying some people portray ARR as the 'cure all' 'end all' of all the bad things in Tamil/Indian Film music. ARR's experimentations with various rhythms/loops/synth should be appreciated. He also is particular about the quality of recording.

Let IR continue his "efforts" to take Tamil Culture worldwide. Good luck to him
However I want Tamil movies (not talking abt culture) to get due recognition first. We have been raped so badly by the lobby group in India that sent movies like Raja Hindustani to Oscars. Now that Tamil movies are becoming mnore technician centric(which is very very very good) we can expect maybe a cannes screening in the next two years??

rajasaranam
I dont really care if ARR takes Tamil culture to places or not. Agreed, he has not taken it anywhere. But why is that a criteria??
You say Ilayaraja has taken our culture to north? NO!! Even now tamilians are looked down upon as the idli sambar eating pot bellied "aiyya" greeting people in India. LEt me ask you what is the constructive and concievable result IR's music has done to us tamilians??
I am sorry I would be proud to show non-tamilians ARR's music and feel good abt being from the same state. Even now when I get into arguments with some northie students, I quip "ARR is Tamil Nadu's pichai to the north" and they stay silent. I can not do that with IR. But that does not mean IR is any less.

V,
If people dont understand the idiom/genre IR is working in, what can we do. Being proud, does not mean recognition from everybody. McDonalds/Pizza Hut maybe very popular. But they are not the best (or even good) hamburgers or pizza.
It is only us indians who crave for recognition from others. Do you see Americans worried about their Oscar award winning movies not being liked by Indians or Chinese or Japanese ? (Nowadays, I am told they do..they are adding some ethnic elements for market reasons ..but you get my point).
You may want to start a separate thread why N.Indians like ARR's music and not IRs.

nice to see ur reply. I never say IR is any lower in his greatness just because he did not establish himself overseas and in north. IR is IR and we tamilians continue to love him.
My point is that tamil films are undergoing some big technical enhancements. Directors like Bala, Ameer, Gautam, Thangar Bachan, Karu Pazhaniappa are very promising. One day we will be seen in international film festivals widely. People will develop a liking for Tamil cinema only if we make it big internationally (not only america, but all over the world). This will bring more focus to making quality movies and will also streamline the industry more.
Now it is ridiculous for us to say ARR should be censured becos he did not take our tamil culture anywhere. Why shud he?? His job is to give music that will reach the diverse audience he has in India. He has fallen down in last three years agreed whoileheartedly. But this veera thamizh fundamentalism like Bharathi raaja in cauvery issue is sickening.
What the hell did Abdul Kalam do to take us tamilians forward? isn't he a tamilian? I feel proud I am a tamilian just becos of his achievement!

N teja, maddy,paran,V,
Do you have english problem to understand sentences?.
I have not said anywhere that ARR made only flops. You read again.
"ARR achieved many, good. But with IR he is nowhere. I remember during IR time producer will first wait to get call sheet from MD. Paralally director also will do same. Finally they will put some actor.
Now you see the produced and the director joining together begging for the date from vikram,vijay,ajith,etc.. even that jimbu. At last it comes in their mind about MD.
Before IR there were MD's like msv,KVM etc.. Then IR entered. he maintened the same and added to that MD top in making film.
Then ARR came with new trend by mixing western, composed several years. He flopped even rajini movie. He made rajini wait a lot and finally send worthless tunes by telephone!!!. Finally rajini gave money back to the distributer from his poicket. Then all the producer and director realised MD is worthless for the movie but morons like vijay, jimbu etc..
But I remind you dont compare present IR with ARR. During ARR time only MD's value gone down.
I am taking about the present film industry with the MD,but you people are taking about karakattakaran, rangeela blah blah.
Please use your brain to think and realise what is happening in the film industry. OK.

V..technically our movies are good. But their artistic value is not that great. I dont see much movies so maybe I dont know. Of all the directors you mention, I have seen only Sethu by Bala. I am not impressed. People like Mahendran, balu mahendra and even bhAgyaraj/bharathirAja (very realistic dialogues/direction but too cinematic ) have done very well. I could not tolerate any dialogues in kAthalan or indian..gentleman was okay..but the songs were picturised well in all of them. Shankar should be making music videos with ARR.
Only ManiRatnam seems to be doing anything decent. But he surely is behind on the creative side. Kannathil muththamittAl opens with a cliched/hollywood style intimacy scene followed by a killing.
Anyways, ARR is doing okay..I am impressed more with his success than with his music. His success is like that of new electronic/auto companies after liberalisation when people flocked to buy these new cars/motorbikes/stereos.

What is problem with symphony. IR was composing number of movies during that time also.
You see Just for one BD (many of them already composed in TFM) how ARR is showins as busy. And gave udaya, parasuram,KV baba,etc..
OK BD already done. After that what ARR did, still showing as busy. He could not do BGM for boys.
