In an effort to make dhool a li'l more comprehensive, we are adding a section "chords" for some songs. This table is presently hidden since we have chords only for a few songs. DFers can mail their own set of chords for the songs they have played / written in the format suggested in the Chords conventions page. Take a look at the way the page is arranged and send your chords to andholanam@hotmail.com. Try to make it as complete and accurate as possible including the interludes. This will help others who are searching for chords to use them. Appropriate credits shall be given to those who send the files.
(1) Paatu paadava

I follow this method for playing:
My voice equals the Universal C pitch.
I sing all the songs in that pitch to decide the swaras and the ragas.( I have the basic maths to fit the song to a raga).
This has resulted in a problem.I never attempt to identify the scale of the original composition. Also I find it difficult to identify the keys of WCM compositions. That is why when i played your Ponondru kanden notes it sounded different to me.
For eg take Amaidhiyana Nadhiyinile odam song. The song should start with F and follow the G natural keys (being a composition in Harikambodhi). But I start with A# and play it with CDEFGAA#C as it suits my HArikambodhi maths.
Hope this is not very confusing.
My request is I would like the play Katrinile in the exact scale it has been composed....as you listen. Is there a thumb rule to get the signature key?
The songs i had mentioned have a smooth flow up and down, composed in Sankarabaranam/Harikambodhi patterns.

OISG: For most of the songs, the notes pass thru the root/key note and even end in the key note. For example:
1. Kallellaam maanicka [starts in "pa" and ends in "sa" ("aagumaa" is low "sa" and humming ends in upper "Sa")]
2. Amaidhiyana nadhiyinile [starts in "sa" and ends in "sa" (vellam vandhaal aadum -- "sa")]
3. Ponnondru kandaen [starts in "pa" and ends in "sa" (vaendumaa -- "sa")]
4. Yerikkarai poongaatre [starts in "sa" but, ends in "dha" (vaasamalli -- "dha"). However, the anupallavi ends in the "sa" and the charanam ends in "sa". This helps to find the root note, as the song goes around the root note. Only, the real end of the song is in "vaasamalli" which ends rather abruptly with a cough?]
The "sa" is the root/key note of the scale. And not "C", if you want to sing alongwith the song.
You can find out the pitch of the "sa" key note using a tuner.
Hope this helps.

correction:
Kallellaam starts in "ma"
Ponnondru starts as "ri pa"

Notes
I think there is a certain gap betwen my query and your notes.NOM as it has to do with my style framing the query.
I will get back with after this weekend with better choice of words.

OSIG,
It appears that you have started asking for the Orginal Sheet Music for the compositions.
I am impressed with your confidence that you can 'hit' the Universal C pitch. Equiped with the mathematical ability, I am surprised that you are unable to find the root note!!!

MS/Srikanth,
I read the 6th article and was nice. I am learning something. MS, how about Part 2 for your article ? waiting for it..

Srikanth
the 6th article was excellent
esp the examples of mohanam and shivaranjani
lots of time composers esp when using shivaranjani uses both the GA for additional emotional effect.
Its kind of consistent in majority of songs like you said.
In the IR song 'Mangkuyile' the mood of the song is sober throughout but when it hit the stanza 'Kurapatu selai' the mood changes, chord changes(min to maj) this I knew but now I can appreciate this much better after reading your article.
some more scores I can recollect with similar ones are 'Unnai thane' from nallavanukku nallavan,
'Kuyil pattu' from Rajkiran movie.
I would also like to know the chord progression of MSVs song 'Unkena Melae nindrai o nanda lala' from simla special
thanks again

Chords and Rajesh:
Thanx for asking. The seventh in the series of Srikanth and second in mine are up today.
http://dhool.com/chords/articles/Srikanth/007/mt7.htm
Srikanth has come to the juncture of introducing some simple ragas and their associated chords. IMO, this is an important section that all the amateur composers should carefully read.
http://dhool.com/chords/articles/MS/002/Chords_and_carnatic_002.htm
I have tried to give some material on the basics of carnatic sheme and also has provided some audio clips for very few ragas in both their cine and carnatic versions so that a listener could see the similarity and differences of the two styles.
Also please check out the isaioviyam sections
which are originally in

Ram's articles can be described as the best cup of hot coffee when you are hungry. You would relish the great taste of coffee and drink with great glee but your hunger would still be unappeased :-) Great going Ram !
