Song of the Day: maalai nila vara vENdum from thaai uLLam.

- A beautiful, melodious number by Balasaraswathy Devi and T.A.Mothi. We discovered Balasaraswathi in "malligaip poo jaadhi roja" which was featured in SOTD a while back. She does a good job in this simple song, which doesn't seem to have an elaborate orchestration.
- Vicky writes on this song in the Old Songs thread:
It been a while that I brought to the attention of this forum, a recollection from my memory of some old nostalgic songs which I now share with this forum. Two of them was sung by my own favorite Balasaraswathi. She teamed up with TA Mothi in both of them. One was " Malai Nila Vara Vendum ..Vanna Marutham Veesida Vendum..Ialam Jodi Kuyil Inbamai Koova Vendum". A silky, meloncholic, mesmerising song to be listened in late evening. The way TA Mothi lends his voice at the end of the song is just amazing and beyond one's crude imagination. Though her repertoire in Tamil was short-lived, needless to confirm, she did contribute to some of the most memorable songs that I have known. The second song is titled "Kandukonden Naane...Kadal Enna Vendru Thane". Looks like TA Mothi was swept away in the tidal waves of male palyaback singers who would dominate TFM including TMSounderajan, AMRaja, PB Sreenivos in late 50s and the 60s. Let us pause a to know this little known singer...He did really have blast with PBhanumathi, the song from the 1949 Gemini movie "Aboorva Sagotharargal" titled "Aaha Aaduvome..." and in the movie "Sabash Meena" (TG Lingappa) (correct me if I am wrong).
- Not sure who the MD of this song is.

Thanks, bb- Maali nilavum vandhadhu, Mandha maarudhamum veesiyathu, ilanjodikkuyilgalum inbamaai koovina--(in fact, this song was a regular in Radio Ceylon's Mandha Maarutham programme)--the velvety sheen of RB, when combined with the unique voice of TA Mothi, gives such a dreamy magical effect.
Narayanan Company’s Thaai Ullam –1952 was written and directed by the great K.Ramnath. Ramnath was an astute visionary whose creations were far ahead of their time. It was he who recreated the magic of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables in celluloid as Ezhai Padum Paadu-1950, which remains a milestone in the history of Tamil films. Other memorable works of Ramnath included Manithan-1953, and Viduthalai-1954.
The unique feature of Thaai Ullam was that RS Manohar played the hero while Gemini Ganesh played the villain! Others in the cast included V Nagiah, MV Rajamma and Madhuri Devi.
Music for Thaai Ullam was by V Nagiah & Adheppalli Rama Rao.
Chithoor V. Nagiah was another multi-faceted genius. Actor-Singer-Music Composer- Producer-Director—he glittered in all these roles. Nagiah and Ramnath worked together for the first time in the Telugu Film Vande Matharam, for which Ramnath wrote the screenplay and handled the camera, while Nagiah, apart from playing the hero, also composed the songs. Nagiah composed memorable music for Telugu films like Sumangali, Devatha, Baktha Podhana, Swarga Seema, Thiagiah etc. Apart from these films, he sang his songs in films like Meera (in which he played MS’s husband, and sang a duet with her, besides a solo), Chakradhaari, Navajeevanam, Ezhai Padum Paadu, En Veedu, Viduthalai, Ethirpaaraadhadhu and Gumastha. He took to playing character roles in the 60s, and made a lasting impact in many of them.
The lyrics for the songs of Thaai Ullam were by Surabhi.
The other songs were the immortal ‘Konjum puravey nenjodu nenjam’ (based on Lata’s Tandi havayen, sung by MLV), ‘Pokkiri payaley unnai thokkave maatten’- (Radha) Jayalakshmi, ‘Kovil muzhuthum kanden’-MLV, ‘Poochendu nee ponvandu naan’- TA Mothi, (Radha)Jayalakshmi & NL Ganasaraswathi, ‘Kathaiyai kelada’- MLV and ‘Naadhathiley bedhamaa’-V Nagiah.
‘Maalai nila varavendum’ was filmed on Manohar & MV Rajamma.
The other Mothi-Balasarswathi duet that Vicky mentions- ‘Kandukkonden naaney kaadhal endraal ennavendru thaane’ is also another spellbinding number- it is from the film Kannin Manigal-1956. Music by SV Venkataraman.

Song of the Day: kaadhOdu thaan naan paaduvEn from veLLi vizha.

- This is one of the best songs sung by L.R.Eswari. Known for her peppy songs and rollicking dance numbers, this was a complete volte-face for her. She renders this song in a mild seductive manner, as if whispering to one's ear. Lyrics is by Vaali, and Music by V.Kumar, in this Balachander film. The film starred Gemini Ganesan and Jeyanthi. A naive village girl (Jeyanthi) is out of place in Gemini's life style. He asks her to wear a nightie that makes her uncomfortable, and her helpless situation is well portrayed in this song.
- Contrast this with another song in the same movie, "naan saththam pOttuth thaan paaduvEn, unnai sandhiththE thaan theeruvEn".
- V.Kumar got MSV to sing a song for him in this movie, "unakkenna kuraichchal, nee oru raja".

BB, this is a best pick in this movie...LRE sings more expressive (those whisperings) in this song..superb
There is another good song I could recollect from this movie..."Oru Naal Varuvaal Mummy Mummy" sung by TMS and PS...
I think Vanishree is also there in this movie..I remember that "Naan Saththam poottu thaan paaduven" song *ing her and Gemini (Both being neighbours in a hotel, I suppose!)

Yes, Vanisri and Gemini are forced to justify their platonic relationship to Gemini's kids. That was KB's "new take" on the subject.

bb- when GG asks Jayanthi to sing, she bursts into a Thyagaraja keethanai (also in LRE's voice)!
GG shuts her up, telling that that is not an appropriate song to be sung in the bedroom, and that too wearing a nightie! (Jayanthi, the innocent, is fully bedecked with jewels, while wearing the nightie!). Some konjals, kenjals and sinungals later, Jayanthi sings this song of shy, whispery romance.
Another song is 'Kai niraiya sozhi'-PS-LRE

Great song!
The little baby has to be fed.. and Jeyanthi has trouble feeding the baby because of the nightie! GG has a good laugh at the difficulty Jeyanthi is facing; and Jeyanthi sings...
paalootta oru piLLai azhaiikindradhu
naan padum paattai oru piLLai rasikkindradhu
Excellent lyrics by Vaali!

sk- to complete it:
Valarndhaalum naan innum siru pillai thaan
naan arindhaalum adhu kooda nee sollithaan
unakketra thunaiyaaga enai maatra vaa
kula vilakkaaga naan vaazha vazhikkatta vaa
Paalootta oru pillai azhaikkindrathu
naan padum paattai oru pillai rasikindrathu
ennakkaga iru nenjam thudikkindrathu
idhai yaar kettu en paattai mudikkindrathu--
Of course, she can't feed the baby- for she has fastened the nightie tightly with an oddiyanam!!
All the while the hidden spool tape is recording her song--
Btw, don't you think Kumar was ever so slightly inspired by Jeena yahaan marna yahaan, iske sivaa jaana kahaan?

Two qs to saravanan,
Is the K ramnath the propreitor of Pesum Padam ( which used to be hugely in demand at the local govt library in my neighbourhoood)?
Chitoor nagaiah also found time to take part in the freedom struggle and isn't there a statue for him in recognition of his contrubutions at Chennai?

Saravanan:
You are very right about that V Kumar inspiration. I remember someone had also pointed this out in the Old songs thread sometime ago. It is still a great song!
Chitoor Nagaiah.. is he same one as our V Nagaiah in Ramu's kaNNan vandhaan and Deiva magan's kEttadhum koduppavanE.. the man who always holds his hand palms parallel with both thumbs up with a mild shake when speaking dialogues? :)) I never knew that he composed music and sang too!
