Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

newtfmpage is the best thing that ever happened to Tamizh Film music.
Where would you get to meet likes of Udhaya, bb, rjay, Srikanth in a single room?
This would be a great resource for TFM for generations to come.
I thank those brilliant guys from IISC.

bb- all the songs from APM were popular, though the film was a big disaster for Motherland Pictures/Kovaithambi, who fell out with IR after Idhayakoyil-1985.
The failure of APM-1986 made KT run to Bombay and rope in L-P for Uyire Unakkaga-also 1986.
APM starred Mohan, Seetha, Ranjini and Rajkumar.
The songs were:
Megam andha megam-SPB
Poo medaiyo-SPB-SJ
Idhu Ilamai ezhuthum kathai-SPB-VJ
Aayiram pookal malarattum-PS
Kaadhal nila theiyandhadhamma-SPB
Poo medaiyo remains one of the two songs that SJ sang for VSN ever, the other being Puthiru poda vandhalaam (from Achamillai Achamillai, with MV)

A big rumour that went around was that V.S.Narasimhan's career was sabotaged by Ilayaraja. I think it is true.

Rani,
I won't deny that many in the movie business are guilty of monopoly. Just a look at the lack of alternatives should tell us that much. But in VSN's case, I remember reading that IR introduced VSN as an assistant who was ready to strike out on his own as an MD in a movie function. Attending the function was KB who gave VSN his first break.
While the successful artists themselves should do their share to bring in fresh voices (case in point VM who suffocated many careers such as Muthulingam's and now Thamarai's; ARR split with him due to VM's insistance that either he pens all songs or none at all), the producers and distributors who only have the bottomline mentality should share a bulk of the responsibility for not going after new blood.

Saravan,
I can hardly argue with a Knowledge Repository. However I remember VSN gave Back ground music for UU in which LP gave the music fo songs (Hindi MDs believe Re-Recording is an inferior task). To thank him for his service, Kovai Thambi gave VSN the chance for his next movie which was a super flop.
Kovai Thambi, I believe, went back to LP for 'Mangai oru Gangai' with Saritha as the Heroine which turned out to be a damp squibb. Do any remember a haunting male solo by Dinesh in that film. The song was very good!
I could be wrong, but some how my memory says APM came after UU .

Balaji - you are right, I remember to have read this. AA came first, then UU and then APM. VSN did rerecordings for UU.
Udhaya - you are also right. I recall in one of the functions celebrating the success of his movie, IR announced that VSN is highly talented and is ready to embark on his own career. Offer came from KB shortly. I also have read that even before this, IR was encouraging VSN to try out on his own.
Given the above, I am afraid, Rani, you may be wrong.

More on VSN - he was the founder of the Madras String Quartet (MSQ not MySQL), I recall another member of this group was kunnakkudi vaidhyanathan's son. They recorded "River Rhythm" with a japanese flutist combining carnatic music, Japanese folk on Jazz idiom.
There is also credit for him in Ravi Shankar's Passage. And this may come as surprise to many -yes, VSN recorded even with the great George Harrison (Ravi Shankar connection??!).
Ample evidence for his talents. But, to succeed you need to be there in the right place, at the right time with the right connections (esp. in the film world). How else one can you fathom - VSN, Shivaji Raja, Devendran, Mahesh (with combined score for less than 10 movies) on one side and Deva, Sirpi, ... on the other side.

Venkat
Thanks for the info.
Just curious why Shivaji Raja along with others
VSN had AA, APM, KA, 1 Ameerjaan movie with a good SPB solo
Devendran had VP, MV and not so impressive KNMN
Mahesh had Nammavar
Shivaji raaja's "Rekha Rekha song was average to tell the best and was touted and Hyped up as the next MD to give a big fight to IR". He did some non-seniscal Telugu movies. Sure SR does not belong to this group, IMHO

Balaji- You could be right. I remember both films coming when I was in 11th std- perhaps UU came before APM. I always thought KT did two films successively with Nadhiya- UU and MOG (in which Saritha was the other heroine)- and successively with L-P too. Thanks for the correction.
Dinesh sang a bit in UU too- in the 'Ododi vilayaadu' song, and then L-P gave him the 'Kaalai thendralil' song you are referring to.
Dinesh also sang 'Oru minnal pola en munnal povathu yaaru' in Paruva Ragam.
Sivaji Raja was also a talented MD- he just didn't get enough opportunities to prove his talent.

Saravanan,
Thanks for providing the song details. "Kalai Thendralil' was a good song. He was a unique singer and I liked his voice, though he lacked the depth of great singers.
Given chances like Mano was given, Dinesh would have turned out to be great singer. Somewhere I remember reading that this guy was not classically trained. Any more info on this guy?

Balaji - my whole point is that the first movie of SR had ample evidence for his talent. What is unfathomable is the way these songs were celebrated and how he was consigned to oblivion right there. If he was touted as the next big IR, and vanished in thin air, someone should have cast a spell in his career.
He may not be great; but hey, his score in the first movie and its success should have got him at least 5 more movies. He was not given chance to prove his limitations.
Contrast this with Sirpi's career - He should have been dumped right after his first movie, in my arrogant opinion!!

Sorry Balaji- no more info on Dinesh.
The 80s threw up some male voices like Dinesh occasionally. Some others who showed promise, but disappeared quickly were Ashok ( 'Vidukathai ondru' from Oru Vidukathai Oru Thodarkathai, 'Poo choodi' from the unreleased Ponni, the lovely 'Oru maanai theduthu maanvizhi' from the unreleased Veli illatha Maamaram), Brahmanandam( 'Sandhakavigal' from Metti), Raj Seetharaman( 'Mella mella ennai thottu'-Vaazhkai, 'Pala naala aasai vechu'- Vaanga Mapillai Vaanga, and 'Manasukkul utkaarndhu'- Kalyana Agathigal ), Ramesh -('Radhey en Radhey'-Japanil Kalyananraman, 'Vaarayo vaan mathi'-Pagal Nilavu (along with someone called Usha Srinivasan!), 'Kanni theney'-Ambigai Neril Vandhaal, 'Oru naalil malarndheney'-Unnai Thedi Varuven) and Prabhakar ('Thodalaam thottalum yogam thaan'-Kalicharan)

I immensely like the violin which flows thu the song 'Oh butterfly butterfly' and the violin bit which is played during the second interlude of the song 'Pani vizhum maalaiyil' from film Meera. Are they by VSN?

bb, Poo Medaiya is a remarkable composition, well paced out and different from that of IR's pull out of the hat stuff. VS has got a unique melody personality just like Salil and Karthik Raja. Very distinct. I think VS is always with IR no matter what, he still plays for IR, does he not? (1989 he was the violin in How to Name It) VS songs are real class, u can see that it is not spontaneous, he shows lot of deliberation and hard work in each song to bring out a special special character and originality, that is perhaps why he could not compose for many films. I wish he had, would'v enriched TFM in a very melodic way. Long live these composers, man. Amazing fellas.

Mythila- like you, I too have a doubt-this is about the film- Oru Veedu Iru Vaasal-1990. This was an off-beat KB film, which had 2 separate stories. It had no songs, but background music was credited to VSN. The film starred the famed vilonist brothers- Ganesh & Kumaresh, and had some amazing violin bits. I would like to know if these were by VSN or G-K.
