Aditya or Kaumudi or Davinci or anyone else,
I have a question on a Janya Raga. If I take 21st melakartha Keeravani Raaga (Sa, Re2, Ga2, Ma, P, D1, N3, Sa') and omit the Ma and form Sa, Re2, Ga2, Pa, D1, N3, Sa is there a Janya Raaga in Keeravani that is described by these notes....
I found that there is Raaga called "caandrika" that has those exact notes but I couldnt cross-verify this. Can anyone shed some light on this Please?
Thanks

Divakar
My reading tells me that it is indeed Chandrika which is Keeravani minus "Ma" both in ascent and descent. I don't know if there are any krithis/keerthanas in this ragam.
Renuka
It reiterates what Da Vinci mentioned. I will have to try again.
Aditya
RMB contextual menu idea didn't work. I will try later.

Kaumudi thanks....
looks like no-one has attempted those note phrases...its definitely not popular.
Here's a Song based on such an interval (Sa, Re2, Ga2, Pa, Dha2, Ni3, Sa': 2,1,4,1,3,1 )
I got the Guitar to somehow tune with me this time.....
I may be totally off on the description of the Raaga I called it Candrika....
Please send in your thoughts!

Folks..all of you are whipping out melodies using some sort of rhythm loops. (probably it is just convenient or quick) It sounds good though..but somehow seems to be different from a tabla or mridangam/ghatam combination (??). I dont know how to express (i am music illiterate) this. What is this difference in musical terms ? I see ALL film MDs also using rhythm accompaniments like this. So what is the future for indian percussion instruments. do you all think that only our melody scales will stay in the popular music genre and indian percussion will be pushed to the classical musical genre alone ?
(Sincerely, Believe me. I am not criticising you guys. Just wondering where we are going with all these)

Hello Renuka, I see that you may be shaping up as a techno pop musician. It's fun to do such songs
- Good Job...but there are some more nice genres of music to explore - try them too. Explore more music without getting exhausted with the software and gadgets...I would like to listen more from you...
regards,
Aditya

Divakar, this is a good attempt. But I really miss your good performance on guitar...When u mention guitar, I was expecting that you're going to perform with some creative strums ( like in sadhiradum velai )...you're a creative and spontaneous artist and I sincerely wish you retain your strengths longer(forever)...
take guitar and piano alone, you can make a beautiful score - like how Idli melts even without any spices...I am not suggesting that orchestration is not necessary - just wish to enjoy more of your guitar and piano work once in a while:-))
Rgds,
Aditya

Aditya Thanks for your Comments.Actually I made that tune for my College assignment. So Thatswhy it should be more technological(because of my course).I have to use more instruments and fusion style.I know I did many mistakes in melody and mixing.I will correct them soon.
At the moment I don't have the Software in home.I used it in my college. So you can listen my pther works my be in next month.Definetely I will try to make a Carnatic raaga based melody.

k,
You hit the bull's eye, pal. Thats where I feel the music we find here tends to become monotonous after the initial techno effect fascination fades off. I am not making any negative comments, but I feel 'k' has a point worth looking into. When you develop a melody and add a harmony and percussion structure it is one thing, but when you work on a preconceived structure or at least on a structure which is kind of mechanized even when you create it, your music tends to follow fixed patterns and this, I believe, makes it less creative.

guys,
I think these folks needs encouragement and guidence, I am not saying davinci and K are complaining. Opinions good or bad are always welcome, Seriously If you want a proper top class arragements you can always hear the cine stuff.,imo, this idea of having "amateur composers thread" is itself unique. Let me tell you it has made many musicians grow, including me, and today it is paving way for more. We see many new faces here. So frankly I dont think music here is monotonous or anything weak for that matter.
These are "simple thougths" from simple hobbiest musicians.a butterfly is learning to fly, I am sure we will see bright colors when their wings grow bigger. Please encourage them maximum extent possible.

I am comfused here...I dont which song/songs are you guys talking about...Because as far as I am concerned a melody hits me and I key it in spontaneously on my piano or play in guitar and I lately felt the need for a more structure music so I added the drums ...but most of you here have been listening to many of my songs and they are all with out percussions and played directly on Piano or Guitar...
But again I find the industry makes two kinda music....one is from Melody towards song other is from rhythm towards a song....the first is very melody rich and the second is Harmony and rhythm rich....I can comment on both kinds of music..I have created great rock songs and usually its inspired by some excellent rhythm from the guitar and lead is often played spontaneously but if you are talking about tamil songs such a format may look monotanous...so we always recommend going from melody and then adding harmony which is what makes the indian music very melodious and pleasant.....So it works both ways and I could only answer you with more of my songs.....

BTW the reason why many commercial songs are created from the Rhythm as Da vinci pointed out is because it is an unfortunate fact but most musicians can only play a keyboard but not a learnt a real acoustic instrument like Piano or Guitar or strings like violin to channel your emotions to these instruments.....Playing a keyboard is different from playing a piano and so a commercial music is often created with very small repeated notes (talking about tamil songs) what you call as pallavi or charanam and some nice interludes....but in reality if you want make instrumental music it takes alot that just traversing a few notes in a Raaga....Da vinci may be able to explain this better...if we are to do ALAAP in an instrument you need to to traverse very many complicated phrases which requires deft handling of instruments which most musicians fail..it is great that Illayaraja could also play the Guitar well so the channeling of emotions is much easier.... BOTTOM LINE: Instruments are there to Channel your emotions the more you can play a real instrument(like flute, guitar, violin which can play more semitones than just keyboard) the more natural and creative one can become and to its easy to package your song with the same emotions .......

I totally disagree when someone says music will be natural if played with naturual instruments. Ofcourse it can play more semitones so does the human voice, but this does not create an impression on the keyboards. Bottom line, Any Instrument is tool that needs to be used properly, this includes keyboards.Musical emotions are not reserved to the type of the instrument, it more reserved to the musical score people write which is coupled with the method we play the score using the instrument. If the score conveys the mood, same emotion can be obtained on any instrument.
Keyboard players though talented much more than other artists are vicitimized by people who comment on keyboards without knowing what keyboard playing is all about.A good KB artist can think and play any type of instrument on the keyboard better than the original ones.
We have our kishmu or MS right here.

the issue here is not about how well you do the fingering but its about how well you can convey what you really sing...see you are right on the money when you said Human Voice does
ofcourse Human voice is the Ultimate so if you want really make your instrument sing like Human Voice like Guitarists like Vioilinists do thats great but KB you just cannot do....you can be close but not just close....thats one of the reasons why carnatic purists run miles when they hear the word Music Keyboard.....Also most of these discussion are in the purview of Indian Music, Raags etc...You can create great western music in KB so dont get me wrong...there are only certain things you can do with KB..sorry its not the artist's limitations but the very nature of KB.....Carnatic Music has 22 semitones in Octave, Some Greek scales has 26 Semitones in an Octave.....ofcourse you can imitate with bends and stuff but thats not real....
Thats why even great Musicians use Keyboard just as Bass in Concerts or support for melody....but not melody itself and I dont understand why suffer so much taking pains making your music sound like real in KB, when you have alternatives....
