Hi all,
I just surfed thro' the net and happened to see the profile of PS. She was heralded as the "Lata Mangeshkar" of TFM. Does she deserve that crown more than SJ and Chithra?

P.Suseela at her peak period had the voice with which you can not compare anyone in universe at that time..Even now her voice is shaky but still stands out better than others She is the real gifted singer...
SJ and Chitra have very common voice...

Way back in early 50s PS won the hearts of Tamils instantly...S.J was struggling for twenty years to get a place but could not...I.R. was God father to S.J. and promoted her ....RATHER Imposed her in TFM...P.S. was too busy in Tamil and Telugu for 30 years that time S.J. sang for Malayalam and Kannadam...Any day P.S. IS above comparison...She in fact is female TMS, female SPB, female Hariharan...She is too good and she is the ISAIKUIL....TNS

For those who feel SJ shouts please listen to the following song - "idhu oru nilAKKAlam" ('tik...tik...tik'). It is a unique song (are there any other song like this - before or after) and I bet no other singer in TFM could have done justice to that song other than SJ. There are thousands of other great songs of SJ but I'm quoting this one because I believe that this song was composed for SJ. Agreed her pronounciation may have some faults but so is the case with every other singer, male or female (barring SPB, maybe). Of late, SJ's voice seems to have lost its magic - the other day I was listening to "kAdhal kaditham" from 'jodi' - made me feel sorry for this great singer.

See the following credenials an artiste has achieved -
-songs over 15000 in about 15 years
-singing in as many as films of 9 Indian languages namely Tamil,Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Bengalee, Assamese, Punjabi + Baduga ( a language of Neelagiris)
-singer of three very popular Hindi Pop Albums
-Having a Ist class musical degree and excellence in classical Music.
-WON 5 NATIONAL AWARDS-for 2 songs in Tamil,1 song in Hindi and 2 in Malayalam
-Only singer who got the best female singer award from governments of all four souhern states
-A singer who won best female singer award in Malayalam for 11 consecutive years
There are many more to be added to this list.
Guess who is the singer with the above credentials. It is nobody else other than Chithra.
I am not geting into the argument who is Isaikuyil
among the singers debated in this thread. But I am sure it is only Chithra who has a track record of combined credenials as above.

Hai Kutty...
From 1968...Uarndha Manithan to 1980 MEGASANDESAM it was PS to get 5 National Awards...She was the first one to create this record...Later on KJY,SPB,Chitra equaled P.S. record.
Infact P.S. bagged the National Award the very first year it was introduced for playback singers..From1957 T0 1986...she had won Andhrapradesh govt award for 26 times...Tamilnadu govt awara for 5 times Kerala and Karnataka govt awards for 3 times each...For 20 tears in South all most for all heroine characters she was the first choice...
Chita is good But Sujatha and Sunanda can sing like her...Where is one singer to equalise...P.Suseela's PEAK period voice....TNS

Srinath: Would you seriously expect any professional to respond with a "ME" for a question about best in the class (except it is an NFL player or boxer)? You can't hold these as reference points for arguments.
Despite her entry with a bang (Singaara vElanEy) SJ was not the singer of choice for the MDs because
a) romba mookkaala paadaradhu
b) on many occasions her delivery of lyrics were undecipharable (new word for the day:-))
IR used her heavily because he thought her singing had a graamiya touch, she was prepared to sing any type of song (not that others were not), and mostly, he wanted to bring about a change. Plus, PS's career/voice quality was also on the decline.
Here's a test for you. Get the duet version of 'pOgudhEy pOgudhEy, en paingiLi vanilEy' or 'maNiyE maNikkuyilE' and try to write down the song by listening to the cassette. You will find that in many parts it is very difficult to fathom what SJ is saying. In fact even Singara vElanEy (if you do not already have the lyrics) is a very difficult proposition if you have to write the words from an audio version. Whereas, Chitra's pronunciation, delivery, diction, are all crystal clear (albeit some imperfections)

while the debate betwen SJ and chitra has been going on for a while on who the better singer is, IMO, Swarnalatha has a better voice than the other two;)) of course she might not be the better singer, but swarnalatha between 1989-1994 was simply great. divine voice.

rajaG:
When SPB sings "Pesa koodaathu" to PS...he probably means it. I have a very poor opinion about PS' ability to sing the kind of songs that I like. Basically I am not very fond of the songs that she has sung well (nothing to do with her singing), and those songs that I do like (IR's, as if I have to explain !) she has sung real bad.
A point-by-point rebuttal, just for entertainment....
Srinath: Would you seriously expect any professional to respond with a "ME" for a question about best in the class (except it is an NFL player or boxer)? You can't hold these as reference points for arguments.
Yeah right, I'll discard Chitra's views and accept yours, instead....in your dreams (no, I didn't mean I would actually appear in your dreams, please :-)). But seriously, Chitra does explain why she is fond of SJ's singing - her expressions, of course (for the anti-mukkal munagal groupies, SJ's expressions don't stop there....your hearing abilites probably do).
Despite her entry with a bang (Singaara vElanEy) SJ was not the singer of choice for the MDs because
a) romba mookkaala paadaradhu
b) on many occasions her delivery of lyrics were undecipharable (new word for the day:-))
What I like of SJ's singing is restricted to the songs she has sung for IR...yeah, one track mind, I know...atleast I'm consistent ! I consider songs like "Malare, mounama" to be glorified JUNK. Mookaala padaradhu, naakaala paadaradhu is nondi saaku. Her singing suited IR's music best, and that was all that probably mattered to IR.
IR used her heavily because he thought her singing had a graamiya touch, she was prepared to sing any type of song (not that others were not), and mostly, he wanted to bring about a change. Plus, PS's career/voice quality was also on the decline.
IR used SJ heavily because unlike her, PS was droning, not singing. I like only a handful of songs that PS has sung for IR...."Karpoora Bommai Ondru" and "Ther Kondu Sendravan" being two of them. PS' singing was a big let down for IR's songs. That is probably why he didn't use her as much. Jency and the likes were another issue. His brain was probably not the organ that was taking decisions at that point.
Whereas, Chitra's pronunciation, delivery, diction, are all crystal clear (albeit some imperfections)
Yeah, so that makes Chitra a better singer than SJ? I don't intend to deny Chitra or PS any credit that is due. They are good and they have their niche songs...same goes for SJ. Thing is, her niche turned out to be bigger than the others. The more I listen to SJ, the more I am beginning to believe that her sense of judgement in using ecxpressions are superior to even SPB's in terms of consistency. SPB can really go overboard at times, while losing focus in other places. When SJ sings something, she totally sings it. The note may not be perfect, the pronunciation may not be correct and the word might not be decipherable. But that hardly matters when you can fully understand the meaning just by the way she expresses it.
Finally, I have tried to analyze why PS sings the way she does...you would probably find it in the "Old Responses" in this thread. That is the most logical explanation I can find for why an obviously fantastic singer like PS was unable to capture my imagination. Unfortunately, that doesn't even come close to explaining why you guys must slam SJ to hold PS/Chitra/Swarnalatha on a higher pedestal. rajaG, you actually have a responsibility with these things...being a professional singer yourself. Tell me honestly, if you were to sing alongside SJ at her best, would you dare turn around and say, "Ma'am, that's silai, not 'shilai'" ?!!! ;-)
