1.The 'Yuhi chaala ' song from swades was orginally composed for Lagaan .
2.Harris Jeyaraj worked with him only for 2 films !!
3.On today's music -
"What is today's Tamil film music all about? They are nothing more than fast numbers or remix downloaded. What took me weeks to make music for a "Gentleman" or "Rangeela" can be done today if you have a computer, software and then pre-set the rhythms and you have a disco number! Fast music is no big deal today as anyone can become a music director"
4.Rajiv Menon film in tamizh .

"when the breadth that you are trying to cover is large, i.e. national or even international audiences the depth of impact in certain local pockets might not be high."
Well, atleast you concede that his local impact is not high. That's a generous concession, thanks.
Reg. national and international commitments let's take a cold and clear look. What's he doing presently on the international level? The only thing that I can think of is LOTR, and that we are all aware now has turned into a 4-composer affair. Hardly the most prestigious sort of credit. What else? Nothing comes to mind. Do you know something we don't? Please spill if you do.
Reg. national assignments, yes, there're a few prestigious projects, yet almost none of them look like crowd-pleasers. For various reasons Rahman has gravitated towards projects that are outright disasters like Lakeer, Dil Ne.., or to festival-type flicks like Rising and Netaji. But let's not prejudge.
My problem is not with the films he's doing, but with the alteration in his behaviour. And that if you'll permit I'd like to start discussing very soon since, as I said before, that's my hope for this thread.

"Vijay, you lay far too much trust in these figures. There are no guarantees in real life, or in films. What is the use if Mani, Shankar sign him on if the movies flop, his efforts go to waste and upstarts like YSR and HJ walk off with the glory?
"
doesnt matter. He is still the highest paid MD out there. Thats what states with certainity who the market leader is.

well you have missed Bombay Dreams and the Chinese film(Wwarriros of H and E) he did. Whether its prestigious or not is the issue. he is atleast being recognized and invited to dosuch projects when other composers arent doing anything worthwile even when they are spending all the time in HFM/TFM. He is being identified with Indian music and that sure says ssomething
"Reg. national assignments, yes, there're a few prestigious projects, yet almost none of them look like crowd-pleasers"
thats fine. The reputation of the banner/director is what that matters
"Reg. your assertion that no major trend has emerged since Rahman, I've a number of ideas for discussion on this that I'll get to soon"
Yeah, I am eager to know of any new musical trends which the rest of us missed :-)

--- as for KR yes i read that sumwhere sorry i dont have the link.KR does alot of the touch up work for YSR sumtimes background music etc.
Can you be more clear on this issue? does KR help him in BGM alone or he extends his hands for songs too? If you say BGM only, KR did help YSR in puthiya geethai and Bose. BOth films gave credits to KR. If you say BGM and songs, my question will be KR himself struggles for his own albums and couldn't get a breakthrough howcome he can help YSR?
Observer:
--- At raaga and cinesouth I barely saw New occupy the no.1 position for 2-3 weeks, whereas 7GRC was on the top for atleast 5-6 weeks.
I don't think raaga and cinesouth exactly reflects the market trend here. But 7GRC has been on top of the charts here for sometime. Now Manmathan is topping the charts. So comparing New with 7GRC is just absurd, IMO.

7GRC is a clear winner if you consider the album sales and definitely selling more than New which was not even a hit outside chennai.
If swades and kisna bomb at BO, then we will see how mr.TB react.. that will be interesting!

7grc didn't take off intially and the crew had to come to Music world to promote it.
I don't think either outsold the other unless you have some big numbers to show!

So you are saying New and 7GRC have done same numbers in sales?? I don't believe this unless you come up with some proof.

yennagada ithu....
now u r admitting it's a hit in Chennai...but how do u know whether it's a hit or miss in Malaysia & Singapore (as i know these places well)??
for ur info..it is a hit in Malaysia and Singapore....so ur theory fails!

I don't think there is any specific list/statistics available in the martket to see the real numbers for tamil albums. Only from Music world, the list has been given to the media for top 10 albums. I don't trust that since it does not reflect the rest of TN. Anyway 7GRC is still among top3 even after it was released some 100 days ago... That will give you an idea about the success. Also the songs are more popular than New.
--- now u r admitting it's a hit in Chennai...
Audio was on top for couple of weeks in Music world, chennai. It bombed everywhere. Same case for the movie too.
--- singapore/malaysia
I don't think those markets will affect TF MDs hrere in tn.

Nattamai and Paran,
New and 7GRC are albums of different mould altogether. 7GRC can be considered as YSR's all time best, while same cannot be said of ARR's as New in my opinion had only one good song in Kaalalyil Thinamum and Thottal poo malarum had good music in general.
My point is don't compare Apples and Oranges. My winner is 7GRC.. beyond doubt.
New is a surprise hit.. Is it really a hit BTW?

Dear Sharath,
7GRC is one of YSR's best and it's a hit
NEW is only an average compostion from ARR and it is also a hit.....and IT IS A HIT...as far as i know..and from what I have read everywhere....

Whenever an ARR or HJ album does well i see websites covering it with stats.
Ciensouth - Arul, Sify - Boys and AE etc.
I read an article in Hindu about the success of VS' Gilli, i haven't read anything of that sort for 7grc, i might have missed out, so... i asked u.
Now i know you don't have anything to show!

Vijay:
"He is still the highest paid MD out there."
I'm afraid I'll have to reply in your fashion: show me proof. Once again you're relying on indirect indicators of merit. If you look at his sales at the boxofficeindia.com, all his past few releases have been outsold by people by Himesh, NS, Anu. Even if he retains a slim remunerative lead at this point, the question is for how long?
"well you have missed Bombay Dreams and the Chinese film(Wwarriros of H and E) he did."
I'm talking about current ongoing assignments. Why rest on past laurels? All BD led to was LOTR, where he's already been relegated to 25%. As for WOHE it led to precisely nothing, whether in Chinese cinema or in Hollywood.
"thats fine. The reputation of the banner/director is what that matters "
Ok, that's fine with me. Let's just differ on this then, you regard them as reputed, and therefore as proof of ARR's rock-solid position. I see them as insufficient in stemming the flood of competitive and hungry talent that's taking over the charts.
"Yeah, I am eager to know of any new musical trends which the rest of us missed :-)"
Sarcasm eh Vijay? How appealing.
Let me illustrate my position. Ever since the emergence of ARR fans of older styles of composition, IR-fans in the South, and fans of Burman/Rafi or whatever in the North have opposed Rahman strongly. According to them whatever is new in Rahman is copied from foreign sources, whatever is old is copied from older Indian composers. Others regard it as nothing but a lot of noise with fast beats. In short, they've not seen anything NEW or revolutionary in Rahman's music.
What's amusing to me is that a lot of ARR-fans make the exact same criticisms about HJ, Dhina and the rest. To them HJ/VSR/YSR are copying from ARR/IR/foreign source, or else they're just noise with fast beats. In both cases the level of smugness, and self-righteousness is obnoxiously high. I believe both are wrong.
ARR did bring something new in. So are HJ/VS/YSR and Vishal-Shekhar(Musafir) or Amar Mohile(Naach) and so on.
Those looking for One Big Trend are mistaken, I believe. The era of that is gone and won't be back for a long time. The One Big Trend is the onset of Many Medium Trends, the proliferation of available choices, and consequently a fragmentation of the composing/listening scenes.
I could go on but I'm sure no can be bothered to read posts that are more than 5 sentences long.
