The identical hindi version of Samsaram song was sung by Talat Mehmood. The Mela song of Rafi is completely different although the format has some similarities.

Ramamurthy: I am not quite sure about that. Talat, Mukesh and Shamsahd had quite a few numbers in Mela. But "Yeh Zindagi Ke Mele" was sung by Rafi. As I mentioned the song was quite similar in its vocalism than the percussion arrangement.

thanks to all

Vicky: Could you please give some examples showing "western classical ambience to many of CR Subburaman's compositions; especially from "Bal(a)raaju" and/or "Swapna Sundari".
BTW, CRS composed only background music for "baalaraaju". Out of 18 songs 11 were composed by Ghantasala and the rest by Gaali Penchalayya (aka Galipenchala Narasimharao).
I agree with Mr. Ramamurthy that the "Mela" song of Rafi is completely different from the song in "Samsaaram" (1950). However a good number of songs in Telugu version were based on earlier Hindi songs. The best known example is: Jikki's "kala nijamaayegaa" (Lata's "jiyaa bekaraar hein", Barsaat , 1949). "Takku Takku Tamakula banDi" (Ghantasala, Jikki, chorus) is based on "gun gun gun"(Afsar-1949, MD: SD Burman) but they are two completely different kinds of songs.
Vakkalanka Sarala (a well known singer of yester years (1948-1952) in Telugu) who worked in the Hindi division of Gemini studios said, in an interview, to Mr. VAK Rangarao (he needs no introduction, I believe) that she "auditioned AMR for the Hindi version of the same song (later sung by Talat, as Mr. Ramurthy already mentioned) and when she was not satisfied, AMR replied that he was not in a good mood and promised to come back for another audition, which never happened." Anyhow, Gemini's Hindi films of that period: "Sansaar, Mr. Sampat and Do dulhen" have no songs of him.
Incidentally "samsaaram" (Tamil, 1951) was the debut film for AMR. His Telugu film debut was a year later in "aadarSam" and "samkraanti" (both released in 1952).
Regards,
Sreenivas

Sreenivas:
Thanks for the clarification and I appreciate your time in sharing the that piece of information. The movie" Balaraju" had indeed three composers (but their respective roles are subject to debate and its beyond the subject matter of this reply) as you mentioned.
So numerous are the films, and so numerous are the information accompanying such filmography (composer, lyrics, actors etc...) that to keep track of them, one would need squad of research assistants to be perfect all the time.
May be something slipped past me and I can't really be expected to catch up on every piece of information. While we are on the subject of CRS's contribution, I would like to share a few thoughts:
First I'd like to offer an uncharacteristic (for me) defense of CRS's musical genius. CRS did bring some innovative ideas to background scores and also orchestration (traces of western classical ambience in his horn section arrangements-one should refrain from expecting full scale orchestration with western classical notations as we usually tilt towards vocalism) in the mentioned movies and in particular the tamil movie "Velaikari". Even the song "Malligai Poo Jathi Roja" from the Gemini movie "Raji En Kanmani" (Composer-Hanumantha Rao) is a popular background score of a western movie of the 1950's (I was surprised to see the same in the AMC channel the other day).
Second, someone needs to explain to those orthodox religious authoritative (self-pronounced)moviebuffs/historians that there are times when committing a small sin helps someone avoid committing a larger sin.
Third, you're kinda smug about it. Yes, you've got fewer movie statistics at your fingertips, but, there are laymen out there who are looking to derive at some basic information and may resent the fact about the superiority brawl and brand them as short-sighted.
Fourth, someone posed a question as to why one should compare indian playback community to opera singers as no one would have any idea as what the author is arriving at. I dont agree with that either. There are many a qualified musical analysts/composers who are aware of music that transcends beyond their borders (ethnomusicology).
Music is a common language, says YoYo Ma (who plays the cello) an extraordinary classical musician/composer as he struggled to accompany a mongolian singer on her vocal lines (from Introduction to the work "Silk Road Journeys"-When Strangers meet). Music is about diversity and discovering transnational voices.
Fifth, some of you out there reading this may be wondering why I'm raisng these concerns, lately many threads have become a disgusting superiority contests on the wealth information someone could share, and depriving the reader the real spirit/essence of each member's views or thoughts in that process.

Vicky:
Thanks for reminding about the A.M.Raja duet
Ulavum thendral. It is one of my favourite songs. It is from the movie Kodiswaran. It stars Sivaji Ganesan and S.Balachandar(veenai).It is a much underrated comedy.I think the singer with Raja is Rathnamala.

One song that I still remember from my early years is from the movie "Pelli Chesi Choodu" titled "Evaro Evaro....Ee Navanataka Sutradari...Manchigaaruga Maamagarini". Not a day passes by without the song striking my memory. Its a very haunting melody quite known for its simplicity, melancholy and artistry (Composed by Ghantasala and Lyrics by Pingali).
Ghantasala/P Leela's mature voices have quite an equilibrium and where, the percussion takes the sideline. Listen to it, you will experience what I am talking about...
The same movie was made (should I say dubbed) in tamil and known as "Kalyanam Panni Paar" (1952) and the song titled "Yevaro Yevaro.." (Voices-Ghantasala/P Leela) composed by Ghantasala.
These are some of the masterpieces which needs to be reproduced for the sake of nostalgia. Looking forward to to both the tamil and teleugu versions from contributors and movie buffs.

The tune of the song "Malligai Poo Jathi Roja" from the Gemini movie "Raji En Kanmani" (Composer-Hanumantha Rao) is based upon the spanish classical "LA PALOMA" which is a very popular song not only in Spain but all over south America and wherever spanish music is appreciated. In fact spanish tunes are more akin to Indian film music. The "Thulluvadore elamai" MGR song is purely based upon a spanish Matador tune. If any one wants a Paraguay rendering of LA PALOMA , please ak.
