Sundar: Thanks for the info on vamanan. Pl let us know how the screening went. Also, are there any events planned between dec 27 and jan 23? I'll be visiting India (chennai) and can set up my programs around that. I'm looking forward to the book fair at qauid-e-millat and hunting for rare tfm/carnatic albums.

R Sundar-
Reg. Valli Deivaanai, I agree all the songs are very good. 'Malargalil raja' by Dhanasekhar and Mallika, 'Velava thiru amara kula thalaiva'by the great S Varalakshmi and 'Poothirundhen kaathirundhen' by PS are all excellent songs, and show NS Thyagarajan's potential. I don't know if he composed music for any other film.
Additional information from Subbu and Kalai in the PS thread:
1. One more song in the film: Kaala chakara therinil- PS and Jamunarani
2.The song 'Malargalil raja' featured Sashikumar and M Bhanumathi.
That Dhanashekhar and Mallika sang in 'Aaseervadham' is news to me. I remember only Kovai Soundararajan's 'Indha naal nalla naal' from it. MD-MSV. I don't seem to recollect the other two songs by MSR.
But there is a similar song which goes 'Ammavum appavum rendu poonaigal' sung by Pushapalatha in Anabai thedi.

R Sundar, Mr. Vamanan has been kind enough to courier his 'TMS- Oru Panpaattu Sarithiram' to me. What an awe-inspiring work it is!
He told me that he is trying to make stalwarts like MSV, TKP and AVM Saravanan attend the function. It seems he has written a special song on TMS for the occasion. I think YGM may be the compere. Anyway, hope you will attend and fill us unlucky people with the details!

I dont remember the lyrics of the song in film "Chithoor RaNi Padmini"...If I remember right it is like a pOtti-paadal with Seerkazhi singing in Raga Kalyani...the swarams at the end are at an amzing speed...one of my friends use to have that tape....we had once set a stop clock to see how long does he sings the Last swaram without moochu-vittufying...he had sung for 67 secs.....unfortuantely I have no access to that now....

I was listening to a lesser known telugu number of Smt. Susheela from the telugu movie "Missamma" (1955) titled "Balanura Madana". It was her early years as a play back artiste when S Varalakshmi, P Bhanumathi, Ravvu Balasaraswathi, Sarala, TG Kamaladevi, P Leela, Jikki were at the peak of their respective careers.
A great classical piece composed by S Rajeshwar Rao. Originally thought PS disguised her voice. Sounded like T R Rajakumari from the movie "Chandralekha" (1948) singing "Manamohana Saranae", under the same composer (in hindi was rendered by Uma Devi, Lyrics by Pt. Indra who was responsible for of the hit movie "Murti" sung by the great soprano Kursheed and composed by Bulo C Rani). The song itself was very romantic as the french would call it.
Remember Felix Mendelsohn's "Songs without Words". What cannot be said in words can be said in music. The songs is pure lyric poetry, tender confessions and emotions expressed in music. The song in itself was a like a soul in the highest form of meditation. It was like listening to Jules Massenet.
I should admit not every singer is as eloquent as PS. But she is an exception. Music begins where language falls silent. But thats not the case here. Her intoxicatingly beautiful voice fills that void and by the stupendous virtuosity the song flows smoothly from her like a balletic bowing.
Its like listening to Paganini or Brahms after a long day at work. It is the real miracle of PS's art of rendering songs and it is the foundation of the musical romance. The mentioned song bears witness to this miracle.
It looked like a debut not before any audience, but sounded like Anne Sophie Mutter making her debut before a Salzburg Festival audience (as most of the southies are carnatic music critics) in her early playback career.
Yet her musical breath is already fully under control and her changing tonalities perfectly concentrated. In every demanding performances, PS demonstrates that she can do everything else expected of a great legendary mezzo-soprano.
Nothing intervenes between our ears and the fragile, vulnerable side of her singing style. That is music-making.

Remembered a popular number of AM Raja from the movie "Samsaram". The song "Samsaram Samsaram..Sakala Dharma Saaram Sukha Jevaanadaram" had both tamil and telugu versions not to mention an earlier hindi song in the same rhytmic format.
The hindi version (Yeh Zindagi Ke Mele) was sung by Mohd. Rafi in his early repertoire days (looks like he put his heart into it) in the movie "Mela (1948)" composed by Naushad Ali and penned by his very own protege Shakeel Badayuni (whom he promoted after he came out of the the "Rattan" spell of Dina Nath Madhok) but sometimes he did use Majrooh. Shakeel and Naushad together were amazing the pairs achieved instant stardom. It was like a perfect matrimony (GR. MKT & Papanasam Sivan in their early days).
The tamil version in its percussion arrangement (CR Subburaman) was slightly diferrent. CRS was a prolific composer with cutting-edge arias and also a pioneer in bringing an aura of western classical ambience to many of his compositions whether it was in "Balraaju" Lyrics-Balijapelli Laksmikantha Kavi) " or "Swapna Sundari" Lyrics-Samudrala Raghavacharya or "Kanniyin Kathali" Lyrics-Udumalai Narayanakavi/Jupiter. His style was quite different from his contemporary GR or SV Venkataraman.
The mentioned song's prelude starts of with a fast waltzy note, but one could feel the sadness in AMR's voice, with its range of pyrotechnic demands both vocal and emotional. AMR is unbelievably precise and he takes us through the florid passages with grace, authority and perfection.
Unlike Naushad's hindi version, CRS's orchestra playing on period instruments common to that era (running at high speeds) supports AMR with a wonderfully clear, transparent and stylistic simplicity. AMR is just impressive.
If you've ever admired AMR's vocalism this is one is perfect for you to listen to.
SK, this song would be a valuable addition to the "Rare Songs Page".

Vicky- The music Director of Samsaram was Eemanai Shankara Shastri and not CR Subburaman.
The original Telugu 'Samsaram' had music by Susarala Dakshinamoorthi and the song was sung by Gantasala.
