Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Neel / Saravanan / sk -
Would you have any details about VJs "Naadhamayame Jagamo?" ?
I have to admit, I have never heard another film / classical singer scale such heights and deliver a performance that is at packs such elemental power. Period. (I will gladly change my view if anybody can produce a song file by any singer of the last 4 decades who has equalled this rendition.)
The sheer pace and execution of this composition even tips the mighty Aanathi Neeyara from it's pride of place in the VJ pantheon. And that's no small feat.
And this new addition to the website made my day a gentle breeze of reminiscence:
"Indru Varum Kaatrinile Enna Visesham, Adhu Aendhi Varum Vaasanaiyil Enna Visesham..."
A whiff of fragrance for a nose-to-the-grind week!

vijay/mumtaj/OISG,
You are welcome.
mumtaj,
Nadhamayame Jegamo is available at the website and in both egroups.
Naaz,
When I said "inRu varum kARRinilE", VJ finished the line with "enna vishEsam". She added that it was composed by Govardanam. Thanks to SK for digging out those two lovely songs from Kadavulin Theerppu.

nAdha mayamE jagamO is truly a great song. It is in a movie named Lakshmi Poojai. MD: Sathyam. A mayajal kind of movie. Possibly dubbed from telegu or made in both languages at the same time. I am not sure. Lyrics are by Vaali.

Thanks for the details. You make Lakshmi Poojai sound like Jagan Mohini!! (was it also directed by the "kind of kitsch" Vittalachcharya?)Satyam was real surprise.
I have not heard any other song by VJ (I could be mistaken) that is such a powerhouse as Naadhamayame Jagamo. It is in a class by itself!
Neel -
Indru Varum Kaatrinile is a lovely song, and although there is no specific similarity between the two, I was reminded of "Aathora Nilave Aagaya Malare" when listening to it. They both are about "good tidings" - and that must be the only reason (besides VJ) for this tangential tune detour!

Nadhamayame is a wonderful song in Shanmukhapriya ragam. I however disagree with your statement that there is no such song in the last 4 decades. In fact, I would put VJ's Aanathineeyara as a better competitor. Aanathineeyara, IMO, is one of those songs which tested VJ's prowess in a lot of aspects of singing and we all saw how effortlessly she glided through the song.
As far as other singers are concerned, PS and SJ (in Telugu and Kannada) have a few songs like this which are classical based and fast-paced as well. This one Kannada song by Janaki "Shiva shiva ennada" which is available in coolgoose - http://web.music.coolgoose.com/music/song.php?id=49398 - is an absolute stunner in its pace. It goes like a rocket towards the end of the song. It is based on two ragas with each ragam alternating between lines. Listen to it if you get a chance.

hi everyone,
the use of swaras as the starting syllable of each line in the last charanam in "nAdhamayamE" reminds me of another grand composition - PS's "mannavan vandhAnadi". Though "nAdhamayamE" is among VJ's finest, I'd place "mannavan" or the ones in Aboorva Raagangal ahead.
(lots of catching up to do...)

The pace, grace and velocity (clarity being a given) are both present in Naadhamayame and Aanathi Neeyara. What distinguishes the songs (in my hearing) is that AN has a few internal shifts/transitions which work to give the singer a second to gather herself before the next blast. I did not notice any such distinct moment in NJ. That was my first observation. Going by VJs own discography, I believe this song stands out for it's fervour and force. That's the second (and perhaps more pertinent)observation. The sapthaswaram elucidation in the end is trademark VJ (similar in some ways to Aanaa Kaanaa) and is a beautiful denouement to the entire composition.
My "4 decades" statement, in my view, still holds. I have not heard (and this might just be my bad luck or lack of resourcefulness, as I go by my own exposure to Indian music of the last 40-50 years) a composition such as this - voice, clarity, velocity - delivered with absolute acumen. The emphasis in my earlier statement was on singer/singing. I can't recall a song by the female greats - Noor Jehan, Suraiya, KB Sundarambal, Varalakshmi, Geeta Dutt, LRE, PS, LM, AB among others having such a song to their credit. I have not heard Parveen Sultana or Kishori Amonkar or Shoba Gurtu try such a scale either. Of course, there might be another such "song" and I would like to sample it if somebody can help me with a link or file.
Thanks for the link. I have heard Siva Siva, and while I agree that the pace and the classical base of the song are impressive, I am afraid I cannot say the same about the singing. To my untrained ears (years of untraining? :-)) it seems stretched and screechy. SJ and vaulting octaves. To some it might seem exquisite. To me, it's a ear full of hurt.

Though not by V'charya, Lakshmi Poojai is pretty close to Jaganmohini in concept. If you get a chance to see Lakshmi Poojai, please force yourself not to see it. naadha mayamO has been destroyed by Jayamalini's cabaret disguised as Bharathanatyam.

Jayamalini's "cabaret disguised as bharatanatyam" + "petty close to Jagan Mohini concept" + one of VJs "force of nature" songs =
(to alter a well-recognised tamizh saying only so slightly):
Kuranngu Kaiyil Paa-maalai?
Makes me wonder how many such (brilliant but lost)songs have been featured in these two-week run, sleazey "mythological" films!!

1979 - Part 4.
I know we are in the midst of listing VJ’s songs for MSV in 1979, but I guess an occasional fleeting detour would not be amiss. In this part of the chronology, therefore, let us take a quick look at two songs of VJ, for two different composers.
190. En kanngal seiyum kaadhalile- Karunamoorthi- Joseph Krishna & Gopalan.
VC Enterprises’ Karunamoorthi was a celluloid adaptation of the story of Jesus Christ, starring Vijayachander in the title role. It was directed by Fr.Christopher Coilo, who had written the screenplay as well. I have hazy recollections of the seeing the songs on TV at the time when the film was released. The record cover shows the Telugu actor Jaggiah as well, leading to the surmise that the film may have been dubbed from Telugu.
The lyrics were by Kannadasan and the songs were:
Varugirathu karunai ratham- SPB
Paralogathil – PBS
Poovinum menmai- TMS
Devan edhanai ketkkiraan- SPB
En kanngal- VJ
Joseph Krishna was the chief assistant of MSV in the 70s, taking over the privileged place of illustrious musicians like GKV, Henry Daniel and R.Govarthanam. JK was highly talented, and said to be a wizard on the piano and the (western classical) violin. He was in charge of the orchestrations/ arrangements in the Mellisai Mannar’s troupe. I have heard an interview of JC wherein he had words of high commendation for Joseph Krishna, and said that akin to Pugazhendhi for KVM, in MSV’s ensemble it was JK who jotted down the notations, taught the instrumentalists, and coordinated their pieces. You can hear JK’s voice humming along with LRE in the song ‘nee ennai sandhithadhundo’ (Unakkaga Naan/ 1976)
I don’t think JK composed music for any other film (no info on Goplan, btw). However, I have listened to some of his Christian devotional songs that used to be aired on AIR.
This song seems to be for a vamp of ancient times; the music has imposing Arabian flourishes, and fast paced arresting interludes. MSV’s influence is palpable in places, and VJ’s grand essay enhances the song’s appeal manifold:
En kanngal seiyyum kaadhalilae
en punnagai mazhaithuli pozhiyaadho
en jeevan paadum gaanathilae
en mounam or mozhi isaikkadho
en attathin nilaiyenna
en paattukku vilai enna
enna---enna---
oru inai unda--

The opening humming is an early indication of the banquet that is sure to follow, and the VJ’s seductive pallavi is persuasive. Breathtaking are heights at which VJ soars so gracefully throughout - adhae oru vindhai!
191. Ellam avan seithathu- Appothae Sonnaenae Kaettiya- KJY- Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi.
Sashti Films’ Appothae Sonnaenae Kaettiya starred Jaiganesh. I have no further information on this film, but I guess it must be produced/ directed by V.T.Arasu, who earlier produced films like Manam Oru Kurangu (1967), Karpooram (1967) and Magizhampoo (1969) under the banner Sashti Films and Dharisanam(1970) and Tiger Thathachari (1974) under the banner Sendhoor Films.
Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi was the VT Arasu’s sister-in-law, and perceiving her exceptional music skills, he must have given her an opportunity to compose music for his film Dharisanam (His earlier 3 films had music by D.B.Ramachandran). And SR winningly justified the trust that was placed on her by coming out with an immortal number in ‘Idhu maalai nerathu mayakkam’ (TMS/LRE). The other films that she composed music for in the later years were Tiger Thathachari- 1974, Appodhae Sonnenae Kaettiya- 1979 and Pillaiyar- 1984.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.
- Cecil F. Alexander, Hymns for Little Children (1848)
Kannadasan echoes the same sentiments in this captivating song. He enumerates the wonderful creations of the Almighty, and the song takes on the hue of a fetching sermon by a mother and father to their tiny children, detailing the infinite grace of the Supreme Lord, and praying for their well being and bright future.
Ellaam avan seidhadhu
pasumcholai
ilamalargal
ingu avanaalae uruvaanadhu
andha deivam nam uravaanathu
papa--kannae-- papa
I have loved this song ever since I first heard it as a child. It is so fervently appealing in the lyrics, so soothingly serene in its music, and so enticing in the singers’ rendition, that the charm is as spellbinding as ever even now.

-1979 to continue with MSV-VJ collaborations--

Saravanan -
After a long day's slog, it is a balm to come here and find new songs and write-ups from you. Jeethe Raho! :-)
I heard these two songs for the first time. Joseph Krishna's composition is very MSV-ish. It reminded me (for it's inventive arrangement and shifts) of Ennai Vittuppirindha Kadhalan (in the VJ/IR collaboration, "Naan Thaan Sooran" comes to mind,) and I enjoyed the song just for the unpredictable turns of the tune.
Would you happen to know if VT Arasu is (also) a general physician? Just curious.
Ellam Avan Seidhadhu is also new to me. Is the male voice that of KJY?
I won't ask how you find these rare songs...and will only insist: Keep them coming!
