I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Somebody was mentioning a lecture by VJ on music practice / ethics at Anna University recently. Do you have any details regarding this even? I don't believe there was any news item on it in the indian english dailies - was the any mention in tamizh journals / newspapers? Just wondering if VJ mentioned anything about the talk....

Naaz,
It must be me who mentioned the lecture to you. I just finished uploading the lecture "Inculcating Values Through Music" at the website. It is wonderful. Thanks to Dr.T.V.Gopal from Anna University for sending me a digitized version of the lecture.

Hi all! Vanakkam, vandanam... I've been busy with the back button on this thread, have missed so much.
Saravanan - enjoyed your latest part of the chronology, more so with the double-bonanza of two early favourites "thinthom" and "ullam urugatha"..
Naaz - very interesting takes on these 2 songs. I missed your last radio show; you must put me on an auto-alert whenever the next ones come along!
The Anna univ event was covered here -

Of course, it was you! You did say so in a message a few months ago! And thanks for the digitized version. I will listen to it sometime over this weekend. Any other highlights from your conversation with VJ?
suresh -
Good to see you around here again. I don't get enough notice from the station (unless I decide on a date and put in a request) in most instances, and post a brief note here as soon as I find out. The last show on LM/PS was one of my better efforts in recent times. I'll do my best with the "auto-alert" and hope I don't catch you between fires (already?)

I have no words to thanks you enough for this little surprise gift to all of us.
A wonderfully delivered, inspiring speech it was! I was sitting in my lab (I had actually come to work) in absolute silence listening to Vani for 1hr 15min and didn't know how time passed by. She spoke in such clear, eloquent English, without any mincing of words and thoughts, that would charm anyone into listening to what she has to say.
A humble person that she is, it must have been kind of difficult for her to come out and talk about values through music by discussing her personal life as an example. And truly that is what it is: an example. Her whole speech was marked by humility inspite of her stature.
Also, her voice - I couldn't believe my ears - it is exactly the same as it was 25 years ago in Sankarabharanam. Manase sancharare was as delectable as it was 25 years ago. It is the music composers' loss that she is not being used today. And when I listened to her tamil kavidhai "dhandikkapadaadha...." as a song (her own composition, I suppose), a thought crossed my mind. With such talent in compositions, I think she should compose music in a big way for films and such. I know she has done that already somewhat privately.
I felt thoroughly inspired by the whole talk. This intensified my desire to go meet and speak to her.
I have to say one thing though. I was slightly disappointed with the question session. The kind of questions that were asked were not exactly what I expected except for a couple. And Vani answered them reasonably, but not everything to my satisfaction. She did wander a little bit (although I quite liked this too). I guess that questions should have been more to the mark.
Overall, thanks so much Neel for this. Also, I have one request for you. Is it at all possible to post an mp3 version of all these three parts of the lecture/questions? I really want to have this with me.

Thanks a bunch for the wonderful gift.
I can't express my feelings in words when I listened to VJ's lecture. She is indeed an amazing personality. I think its a big loss for TFM not to use this exceptional talent. Her voice is still fresh, just like it sounded so many years ago.
I listened to it first thing in the morning and her voice is still ringing in my head.
Thanks again
Balaji

Anna University picked an artiste rooted in "indianness" and "indian culture" for their series inaugural address, and VJ seems to be the ideal choice. The talk revealed her proficiency in several languages (the quick moves from Urdu to Tamizh to Hindi to Marwari/Rajasthani - such ease and command!,) her pride in her achievements, her belief in her principled work-ethic, and her ablility to engage an audience with candour, sincerity and genuine interest. A role-model who leads by "simple" example. I hope it appeals and inspires a young new generation.
Thanks for sharing the audio track with all of us.

Neel, Thanks seems a very inadequate word for the gift that you have brought back for us! Just finished listening to it and enjoyed every moment of the event.
At the end, I am left with a feeling of pride, pride that we have such an artiste amidst us, an artiste of extraordinary talents no doubt, and an astute, intelligent and cultured woman, but more importantly a remarkable human being- she stands tall as a person of impeccable integrity and honesty, a humane being, full of compassion and social awareness, and the embodiment of rare humility.
I am sure the students were deeply impressed, she must have been a bundle of pleasant surprises for them!

And Neel, AV and Suresh, belated thanks for your responses-- I'll continue with part-4 of 1979 soon.
Suresh, glad to see your post after ages, and may I remind you a popular song from Hum Kisise Kam Naheen? ;))
Balaji, delighted to see your post as well :)
Naaz, I am sure VJ must have had words of high appreciation for the Neel's painstaking work -- our Neel is being reticent about it (as usual!)

Can you give me the link for the Anna University lecture of VJ? I was unable to locate it in your site.

Kaumudi, Balaji, Naaz, Saravanan,
You are welcome. But your thanks should really go to Anna University and Dr.Gopal for organizing the lecture and for sharing with us.
Kaumudi,
I will upload the lectures at the egroup tomorrow.
Naaz/Saravanan,
Both Mr. and Mrs.Jairam were very happy and appreciated the website, the long running discussion thread, and all the sincere fans who love her music.
It is no pain. I enjoy sharing my joy. The only pain is typing with two fingers :-)
SK,
The link is on the homepage. Or you can click on the "Lecture" button on the leftside menu. You may have to refresh the page.

Thanks to everyone involved for making this lecture available. While listening, I wished that many more celebrities, like say Kamal, were as eloquent as Vani was in her speech. Her voice/tonal quality hasnt changed much in the last 20 years and her renditions of malligai en manan mayangum, naadhamenum kovilile etc. without any accompanying instruments was a treat to listen to. You are awed by the prowess of those compositions and by how much a singer can do justice to them. Such knowledge, education and fluency in several languages is something uncommon in the Indian tinsel world.

Bonanza Time at the Website - Or so it seems! The new additions always take my breath away...Maalai Mudhal Kaalai, Karisal Tharisu, Kanne Colour Coloura, Kalaimagale Unnai Azhaikkindraen, Anbu Thalaivan Kaaladi...whoa, I was shocked and awed to find these rare tracks at the website today!
May this trend continue without interruption! :-)

I have just finished listening to the lecture delivered by VJ at Anna University. At the outset I like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who have contributed to such a fantastic event and special thanks to Neel who has been a real source to bring it out for us.
I had planned to finish so much today and was a bit cautious not to talk to anyone in the office- which might eat my golden time. But started listening to VJ's crystal clear voice with melody coupled with perfect shift from one language to another, not even a percent of today's schedule moved from my table. What a great personality she is. No apt words to express what I really really feel. It is quite amazing that the voice is absolutely maintained even after a couple of deciniels.
I heard the same voice which I felt 30 years ago. She actually adds glory to our Indian heritage and culture and I am lucky enough for I have born in this century, otherwise I would have missed this GGG (God's Great Gift). Must feel proud of such a wonderful woman associated with dedication, sincerity and simplicity. Her quotes in general, from Thirukkural and sayings of Swami Chinmayanandha in particular, for sure, would have inspired most of the students.
