Purv,
How did u get hold of those movie titles, do u happen to have any source for some of those movie songs?
Because, as far as I know,
K naane and B naane has that nice song " aadai kondu...." later remade by IR for the Chiranjeevi's " abhilasha" the run away hit of Chiranjeevi which helped him move to the megastar status.
"Stahyvaan" is a remake of Vamshi's " April 1 viduthala", again with some very nice songs, most were just fantastic in Telugu ( one of them was actually a rehash of the evergreen
" Chithiraisevvanam" of Kaatrinile varum geetham tamil movie)
I have been looking for the title of that Thyagarajan movie by Satyajyothi films or satya movie ( a dabba movie indeed) thanks for the title " Neruppukkul Earam" I know there are two very nice songs from that movie
Thangamadi Thangam had a nive Malasiya vasudevan SJ song, can't recollect the song lyric
Let me know if u have any source for getting the audio files of any of those listed by u

When you list dabba songs of IR, just look at recently released films , Sena, Weldon, Anbe Anbe, Enru Mudhal, Sami, Punnagai Poove, Kathal Sadugudu, Arasu, Dham, Bandha Paramasivam (Is any more) , you feel a big vacuum on the songs. Inspite of repeated promo by sat tv's not a single song or even a bit sticks to your mind. This shows the power of IR, every set of release his tunes shows a rare class and enjoybable songs. Absense of IR makes a huge difference!

XML,
It is rude and discourteous to use upper case - sounds like you are screaming - not very musical! While you can scream till you are blue in the face - the general public; the final judges don't seem to think so. Movies sink and swim for a number of reasons. The same Rajini who drafted ARR for Muthu; Padayappa called him for Baba. Contrary to what you say; the Baba songs are doing pretty well and have provided requisite mileage for a very weak theme. Sankar knows his business - he has produced five hits in a row; let's not try to second guess professionals. As for dabba or not your word is as good as mine. I don't think IR has ever composed a dabba number - although there are several numbers of his which aren't particularly memorable. During the IR mania of the 80s quite a few of his fans enjoyed trashing MSV - but now when you listen to the same numbers you know what you were missing. It is possible to talk well of IR without putting him on a skyhigh pedestal - he is human. So don't fly off the handle.

Pennathur, songs like "Isai arasi ennaalum naane" from Thai Mookambikai(Have you heard it?), "Mazhai koru devane" (Sri Ragavendrar) and the recent semi-classicals from Ivan will more than hold their own against the songs that you have mentioned as examples. Its not that IR cannot compose hardcore classicals. He did as recently as Ivan. There have been fewer and fewer films since the 60s that offer scope for such semiclassicals. How many mythologicals or devotionals or raja-rani stories came in the 80s as compared to the 50s or 60? IR got very limited opportunities to score for movies that offered scope for composing semi-classicals and he made the max. out of it.
Even in a movie like Sindhubhairavi he had to compose for situations like "Thanni thotti thedi vandha" which would have been unimaginable in the 60s. But "Mari mari ninne" and the classical part of "Paadariyen" more than made up for it.
In his 10 year sojourn ARR has yet to get a full-fledged opportunity to show his ability in composing semi-classicals. Duet and Sangamam arent so pl. dont mention them. We will probably never know. That doesnt mean he is not talented or that it is his limitation. Its just that as far as TFM is concerned the interest in such semi-classicals are dwindling and the MDs are getting less or no opportunities. Whereas in Malayalam, interest in classical music and CM-oriented films has always been more or less constant although I hear that even there, the trends are changing.

Vijay,
It is not a question of opportunities only - What do you make of them when you get one? I draw a difference between a raaga based popular song - where only a fool would say IR hasn't done exceptionally well - read my post on "Amma...azhaikkatha" in Mannan for what I think - What do you do when you get an opportunity to sketch a hard-core classical number? "Naan paada varuven.." in Metti(?) is a straight knockoff of "Ethavuna.." in Kalyani - compare that with the numerous Kalyanis we have heard classical and otherwise. "Om Namasivaya.." - Salangai Oli - is in HindoLam and stays very close to "Samaja Vara Gamana" - compare the two. Or the duet in "Ivan namma AaLu.." Bhagyaraj vs. Shobhana. IR comes off a distant second. ARR of course hasn't produced anything like this apart from faithful renditions like "Alaipaayuthe...". Granted. However the standard of comparison is in this case KVM/MSV/GR and the golden greats. I have no doubt IR is equal to the task and can deliver a 3-hour classical vocal recital in Music Academy if invited. It's a another matter that the Gnaanashunyams of the Academy are yet to acknowledge IR's genius. Since the entire upper-caste establishment has recognised IR's credentials - MS and Semmangudi to the critics (Subbudu); to the Kanchi Mutt; it is moronic of the Academy to be ostrichlike. But this is an entirely different matter from IR's work to date - he is capable but we are yet to see his best.

Pennathur, what about the examples I have given? As far as I know neither "Isai arasi" nor "ennai enna seidhai" from Ivan are take-offs on any popular krithis. The former is in fact based on a rare scale called Sallabham. It was overshadowed by the simpler yet appealing "Janani Janani" from the same film. Thats not IRs fault. These are just few examples to show what IR was capable of composing.
""Naan paada varuven.." in Metti(?) is a straight knockoff of "Ethavuna.." in Kalyani"
Naan Paada varuvaai was composed for a situation where the heroine (who is no expert in classical music) playfully imitates a kacheri-like performance near a lake side. And it was wonderfully done. Its not a hard classical at all to be taken for comparison, more like a parody. The ending portions with the violins were awesome though.

"Om Namasivaya.." - Salangai Oli - is in HindoLam and stays very close to "Samaja Vara Gamana" - compare the two "

Pennathur: I disagree. There are some similarities obviously because both are ultimately based on the same raaga. But it would be too much to call it a rip-off or even an inspiration on part of IR. There are hundreds of devotional songs based on this raaga, many of them bear certain common features.
At this rate, people would accuse IR of being inspired by "nadhamenum kovilile" while creating "kannan nee isai..." in Ivann! :-)

It's amazing how different personal tastes vary. I know I'm sounding repetitive here, but I just couldn't help noticing MR. Pennathur's comments on 'Aathma' and 'I Love India.' I really like the songs in the former album, and I'm certain other people really like the songs in the latter album [though TBH, I thought 'I Love India' songs are routine stuff]. Don't be surprised if you hear someone say that the songs from 'Payanangal Mudhivathillai' or 'Ilamai Oonjalaadugiraathu' or 'Gopura Vaasalile' or any other IR album that most of us would consider *HIT* are awful and the worst. NOM, Pennathur sir. [btw, what did you think about the thread where others were ratting on you for badmouthing IR?]

Pennathur, 'Om Nama shivaaya' is just not close to 'Samaja varagamana' although they are both in Hindolam. That is the prime reason why 'Ohm namah Shivayah' is very close to my heart. It can qualify the standard of any Papanasam Shivan's keerthanai and can be sung as thukadas in any classical concert. The same goes to the SriRanjini based 'Kannan nee en isai nadha oviyam' from IVan.

The versatility of a composer comes into play when the same raagam is used for different songs that don't end up sounding similar. That is Mannavan Vandanadi is a classic Kalyani - it is like no other Kalyani. You can't accuse a composer of knocking off a kriti because it is in the same raagam. But if the composer attempts the same sangatis I will compare the two and may find one of the wanting. If you say that Om Nama Shivaya is good for Hindolam - so be it. "Raara Venu" and "Maaman Oodu - Machan Oodu" in Ellam Inbamayam is an example of a pleasing knock-off apt to the situation which is why Maaman Oodu remains one of my favorites. "Naan Pada Varuven" and Sindhubhairavi songs don't particularly please me.

IR, I agree has not done a strong classical piece in Kalyani like KVM's Mannavan vandhaanadi' , but his 'Vandhaal mahalakshmiye' from Uyandhaullam is also good. His ligher compositions in Kalyani like 'Vellai pura onru' ,
'Oru vaana vil polle', 'Vizhiye vilakkondru etru'
'Sundari kannaal oru seithi' and many more just show his mastery over the raaga.
'engirundo ennai azhaithadenna', 'Adi adi varum pallaaku' from 'ILIndia' and all songs of Athma bear IR's stamp strongly and they are not inspired from ARR.
I personally feel, it is not a great challenge for any MD to compose a straight jacket pure classical song. It is challenging to bring tonal shifts , counterpoints and other flavours to make the raaga more appealing. That is where film music scores over pure classical kutcheris.
