Viswa, well said. But I differ, or rather would like to add one point. If we were unaware that the MD is IR, there would be quite a few songs that we would like more too. This would happen since your expectations would be less. For example, I was caught by the music of "Maachis" because the music was different from the ordinary Hindi stuff. But I would not have been caught by them had the MD been say KR as I would have had higher expectations (all this pertains only to the songs; the theme music is good by any standard).

Here is a List of ARR Dabba Songs.
Aaadi Paru Mangatha - May Madham,
Pallakaatu Machanuku - May Madham
Karutukena Route - Bombay
All Song from his recent film - Rakshagan.
All songs from the movie ARR made for Satyaraj - Dont remember the name of the movie
if a MD with 20 odd films can produce dabba songs so consistently and quickly, IR with 700+ movies can produce a few hundred so called Dabba Songs.

also, one should not forget that raja has given some of his greatest songs for some of the most dabba films in the eighties. they include kazhugu, enakkul oruvan, most of ramaraajan films, most of mohan films etc. if u see these films u will wonder how did raja ever get 'inspiration' to score music. in most of the great songs, the picturisation would be very poor, with an expressionless ramaraajan singing some great songs. vayatherichalaa irukkum. bharathiraaja's films were no exception. 'poonkathave' was a murder visually. alaigal oivathillai was a mega dabba. raja gave good songs only because of BR. how about nadodi thendral? the biggest dabba of all?
so, there is always a flip side to the coin.

IR, during 80's was in "the zone". antha periodla, he was in such a flow that other external motivation like story, director, picturisation quality never mattered to him. only people with amazing control and involvement in their proffession could achieve that. BR's picturisation was considered to be immaculate during those days. I still feel Nadodi thenral as an album(songs+picturisation) was a master piece!

dhan,
what i was referring to is the way BR picturises romantic songs, with females in white frocks running all over, looks silly. lot of films from the eighties are examples. some of the good songs were spoiled by actors like sudhakar( K pogum rail) and paandiyan. yeah, nadodi thendral was comparitively better. but still i consider manirathnam and balumahendra as the best in giving life to raja's songs visually.

Dabba songs of IR? Curious topic! Going by Srikant's definition, here's my list (my objective is NOT to bash Raja! I just want to make a list for the sake of list-making.)
1. Naan Ippathaan (Senthooram)
2. Songs in 'Adhiradippadai' left me yearning for 'Rajakumaran' songs.
3. All songs in last year's 'Devan'
4. Naan Thaanda Ippo Devadas (Thanikkaattu Raja)- the weed in a bouquet of flowers
5. Dingu Dongu Rappappo (Valli)- actually I suppose this is an ok number if you listen to it enough times.
6. songs in 'Rajasthan' except for 'Machchaan Machchaan' by S. Janaki, which I quite like
7. Palli Paadammaa (Meera)- the bad apple in an otherwise great album
8. one song in Ellaam Un Kairaasi, whose title escapes my mind.
9. Othipoo Othipoo (Richshaw Mama)
10. several songs in Chandralekha
Can't think of others right now, but clearly, everyone has their share of impurities, and Ilayaraja is no exception. :-)

btw, how was the quality of IR's music for films such as:
Neruppukkul Eeram
Thalayanai Manthiram
Oru Iravu Oru Paravai
Odi Vilaiyaattu Thaathaa
Puthiya Theerpu
Thedi Vantha Raasaa
Sathyavan
Anbu Kattalai
Murattu Karangal
Neram Nalla Neram
Thangamadi Thangam
Changanaadham
Kelviyum Naane Badhilum Naane
Chinna Kuyil Paadum
I never see any discussion on the music from these films. It's high time someone sheds light on the music of these films I feel.

This is what I like about IR fans. They know his music in and out. IR fans have the capacity to understand his music and explain how and why they are good and bad. Well matured, knowledgable and broad minded fans.
How many ARR fans are broad minded and matured enough to start a thread like and this and discuss?? -- (now dont say that ARR never produced dubba music... :)
80's was a 'porkalam' for south indian film music. In that 10 years period alone, IR probably did around 400 movies, i.e approximately 2000 songs. I bet the count of dubba songs wouldn't be over 5%.

NeruppukkulEram had a nice melodious duet by SJ and Jayachandran( Adi kaalai nilave).
As far as my memory goes , KelviyumNaane has a good punaagavaraali based duet( Aadai kondu aadum Kodai megame)

Srikanth,
Agreed , there are many dappankuthu songs of IR.But I find atleast something that captures my interest in some of them.
Eg :Kokkarakko kozhi(Kalaigan)- sung horribly, tune is not good. But I like its humming chorus, the fading beats in the end.
Busna PTC, Ulla than QMC - Stupid lyrics. But I like its bgm, the scale change etc.
Vazhi onnum theriallai vayasuku varavillai (film anda oor nimidam) - cheap, lewd lyrics , but amazing music set in some classical raaga
rathiri neram rayilladi oram - film ?? (satyaraaj, bhanupriya movie)- just listen to the interludes and bgms in this so called dabba song

Taste in music varies by individuals. In the list mentioned by Purv:
I love - "Naan thanda Ippo Devadaas", tow songs from Devan especially "Ezhai Jaadhi" (western classical is so natural to IR), Dingu Daangu Dappapoo, three songs in "Rajasatan" including the ones by Shankar Mahadevan, Swarnalatha and Hariharan.
With regards to albums, "Thedi Vandha Raasa" is just a great album. One song by Malaysia Vasudevan is a classic. Have you listened to "Oldellam Gold" from "Odi Vilayaddu Thatha" and Sathyavaan has one song which is great.
It is amazing that musical tastes are so varied. I listen to some songs like Haira Haira Hairabba that people go ga-ga over and can't fathom why. I think it is all a matter of perspective.

Yes, that is true, K. Any song can be fodder for either criticism or compliment, depending on individual tastes. So I suppose, if every avid listener posted whichever songs of IR they disliked, we could have all songs for which he composed.
Mr. Mahadevan mentioned earlier on how he hated the songs in 'Paattu Vathiyaar.' I think just the opposite-- I love at least 4 of the songs: 'Solai Malare' (Aarabhi-based [?] song by KJY), 'Neethaane Naan Enthan' (both versions) and 'Poo Maari Om Maari'.
Furthermore, I actually spend more time listening to IR's 90s compositions than his 70s ones, and probably those ultra-conservative old-is-gold-new-is-poo prospects would be the first to point out my 'obvious' lack of intelligence.
I just haven't seen any discussion on 'Thedi Vantha Raasaa,' 'OVT,' 'Thangamadi Thangam', etc. whatsoever, and am curious about them.
vardhini, my mistake. 'Adhi Kaalai Nilave' is from Uruthi Mozhi

I take that back... what I meant to say is that I can be equally enthralled while listening to IR's 90s and 00s hits as I can listening to those of the 70s and 80s.

Ha, I remember .
rathiri neram rayilladi oram - film Bramha.
tEDI Vanta raasaa , I liked one UmaRamanan number in that film where Kush is trying to seduce RR.
I like this Kalaignan Kattukaaval ilaada katrai pola , Edakku mudakkaana sarakku music too (though all of whom ever I know hate all the songs of Kalaignan except the Nalinakanthi number)

BTW, I hate 'Kuruvi kodanja koyya ' song of Azhagi as much as I love 'Paatu solli' of the same.

Hm, interesting Vardhini, that everyone you know of hates Kalaignan songs. Must be due to the lyrics. Don't misunderstand, I probably wouldn't be able to make out the lyrics, for my knowledge of the Tamil language is limited. However, I have the songs 'Enthan Nenjil Neengaatha' and 'Dil Bar Jaane' on tape, and listen to them over and over again. The latter number is actually one of my dad's favorites.

I recall someone having stated that the songs in 'Maharaasan' are lousy. Well, I am listening to the songs now, most of them for the first time, and three of the four songs stand out:
1.) Ada Arachi Arachi- Mano, SJ (lovely Sudhasaveri[?] tune)
2.) Ada Raakozhi- SPB, SJ (infectious beats)
3.) Raasa Maharaasa- MV
The moral of the story is, guys, one can make known to others songs he/she thinks that are lousy, but others need to listen on their own before they can make a judgment.

One of the worst compositions of IR are "Aatma" and "I Love India". In the former there is a song that is an obvious attempt to create a "Kannukku mai-azhaga" feel. In the latter there are quite a few riffs that are Roja'esque (probably because the movie is set in the Kashmir Valley just like Roja is). There are a fair number of songs that you wonder why IR did at all. But that is the greatness of the man - if you have a contract to deliver 6-7 songs it shall be done. And before I am "veLLA vaa pathukiren"nd by the makkaL here I must tell you that the least impressive numbers of IR are his classical numbers - Saagara Sangamam (Salangai Oli?); Sindhubhairavi. IR is great in using ragams and scales to compose typically filmi music. But when he composes a hard-classical song it is neither here nor there. In this respect IR is yet to give us a "Paattum Naane"; "Madhavi Ponmailal" (a number by TMS that has to be discussed in a separate thread) or a HH Abdullah as Raveendran has done (who incidentally is a great admirer of IR!)
