How many times you have gone to the picture hall got thoroughly bored by the flick & suddenly an excellent song comes along ( in most cases horribly picturised ) It left you wondering what is this song doing in a movie like this. Conversely you liked a song very much that you went to see the movie with the same result.
For starters I have given half a dozen.
1.gangai nadhi oram Raman nadanthan ( varaprasadham. Vijay Kumar , jay chitra horror)
2.meen kodi theril manmatha rajan (Karumbu vil. why was this movie made beats me)
3 engum niraindha iyarkayil enna sugamo ( idhu eppadi irukku. dandama irrukku. based on sujatha's Anitha ilam manaivi. it was averitable kotthu kari. *g jai & sridevi)
4.Vaanavillinul varna jaalangal ( Naan naane than *g P Madhavan's son Aamam nee neeye than en velliya vanthe)
5.Unakkenna mele ninrai ( Simla special what was special was this was a tragic comedy. Sv sekar irrunthum ...oru sirippu kood illai)
6.Malargale malargale (Love birds. pyramid natarjan & P Vasukku than velicham indha padathin nokkam enna enru)
I can think of other movies. the criteria is that the movie should suck ( of course mostly the movies would have bombed but there may be exceptions)
I don't want people to come & post simla Special Ariyaluril 20 Naal Pocchu enru. The movie sucked big time ( more so as it was from Mukta movies)

well KB had everything going for him. He was a vetran enough by then to have people coming to see his movies just because of his name. And given the Star Cast of Kamal, Sridevi etc.
Nizhalgal sounds very pale in comparison. Infact I was fully aware that Bharathiraja was successful b4 Nizhalgal but still he was a newbie. He infact quite frankly accepted that his timing was wrong.
As far as song comparison goes, I cannot choose between the two both have great songs.

if they show those 2 fat elephants jumping into water tank in a field 1 more time I think TN will go mad. This is one song that can be called "disgusting" because of it popularity. Much more than "my heart will go one" by celine dion.
Although "my heart will go one" was shown just 200 times every 6 seconds. This chinna thambi circus show was shown about 7000 times every nano second. ALl IR's voilins and interludes become noisy irritatnts in the BG .. with these 2 elephants dancing around

Incorrect! The topic is about good songs in dud movies.And to me chinna thambi was a dud movoie because of the two elephants.
In your other examples u didnt like the appearance of the movie but here i didnt like the appearance of the actors. there is no difference. period.
And dont get sanctimonious about "all or god cretaions" " dont talk about appearances " etc..
They look ugly. they shouldnt be acting. if they act they make themselves available for publicn comment. when/if i act you can comment about me.period.

I havn't seen metti or kai kodukkum kai. both directed by Mahendran. The movies were colossal flops. Has anyone seen the movies? If so, how good (or bad) were they?
Metti had a beautiful song - metti oli kaatrodu.
kai kodukkum kai had "thazhampoove vaasam veesu" -pure melody, the line in that song "nenjathiley oonjal katti ariraro paadavo.." very touching and romantic!

tigger - "Kai Kodukkum Kai" was a very good one.... but people (Rajini fans) did not like Rajini in that role..... not sure about Metti - one thing for sure, it had very good picturaisation..... was it by Ashokkumar ?

Thanks Sabesan. I became a big fan of Mahendran after watching Mullum Malarum. Sad that the pothumakkal (other than rajini fans) could not make KKK a success. Maybe they assumed it would be like a typical Rajini movie and avoided it! I'll have to watch it one of these days.

2 fairly recent movies that prove that IR's creative reservoir is as full as ever are:
1. manam virumbuthe unnai
2. rajakumaaran.
both movies starred Prabhu, both movies had absolutely wonderful songs, and both movies were massive flops.

I saw KKK on first day(As usual!)-very good movie with a very realistic and subdued performance by Rajini.Songs were very good as usual by IR for a mahendran film.The best thing ,however was the BGM.One scen while revathi is raped by the villain,rajini will be fighting to save another female-the bgm in that scene-IR has somehow merged both the the moods in that music.

how did you get tickets for watching on the first day itself?! Did u stand in line the previous night, or did u buy in "black"?
I never managed to get tickets for a 1st day show. The best I could do was watch a few of Kamal movie rasigar shows (held in the first week). The guy called Kovai Kamal (one-time kamal rasigar sanga thalaivar) lived in our neighbourhood and he gave me tickets sometimes.

I am from Kovai, though currently living in the US. Those were the good old days indeed, when a kuchaan's (police) main source of excercise was crowd control in cinema theatres. Guess things have changed now drastically - loss of innocence for Kovai.
Other movies:
nandavana theru - had a beautiful song "velli nilave", movie was supposed to be awful. Another movie by RV Udayakumar I did get to watch and hated was Yejamaan - cheap imitation of chinna kounder - but exquisite songs.

The original story came in dinamanikadhir-that used to be a seperate magazine on its own initially-I have read the story long time back.I think the original cancer pt in that movie was a female.Mahendran had to change it into a male character.Too much pathos and the story takes place in lucknow-so heavy dosing of hindi dialogues.Has another lovely song-manjal veyil by Uma.

I just watched KKK today, it was a very ordinary movie imo, the only redeeming feature was the concept that a raped girl has other options than just dying, or marrying the rapist. The songs were good though.

athey thaan Kupps. Mahendran should not have directed such a movie. Also Nandu. But I strongly belive, KKK cud hv become masalated very much (also superhit) in case it was directed by someone. Mahendran is one of the great directors in the world. Another director I respect is R.C.Sakthi.

I loved Mullum Malarum and Johnny. That's why I wanted to watch other Mahendran movies, and ended up watching Kai Kodukkum Kai. It was a disappointment, only the songs/BGM (IR) and photography (AshokKumar) were good. Routine hero with a "heart of gold/arms of steel, bashes up everyone" movie. Like I said, only the ending concept was good.
Does anyone know if Metti and Udiripookal were good?
