excellent songs in dud movies

How many times you have gone to the picture hall got thoroughly bored by the flick & suddenly an excellent song comes along ( in most cases horribly picturised ) It left you wondering what is this song doing in a movie like this. Conversely you liked a song very much that you went to see the movie with the same result.
For starters I have given half a dozen.
1.gangai nadhi oram Raman nadanthan ( varaprasadham. Vijay Kumar , jay chitra horror)
2.meen kodi theril manmatha rajan (Karumbu vil. why was this movie made beats me)
3 engum niraindha iyarkayil enna sugamo ( idhu eppadi irukku. dandama irrukku. based on sujatha's Anitha ilam manaivi. it was averitable kotthu kari. *g jai & sridevi)
4.Vaanavillinul varna jaalangal ( Naan naane than *g P Madhavan's son Aamam nee neeye than en velliya vanthe)
5.Unakkenna mele ninrai ( Simla special what was special was this was a tragic comedy. Sv sekar irrunthum ...oru sirippu kood illai)
6.Malargale malargale (Love birds. pyramid natarjan & P Vasukku than velicham indha padathin nokkam enna enru)
I can think of other movies. the criteria is that the movie should suck ( of course mostly the movies would have bombed but there may be exceptions)
I don't want people to come & post simla Special Ariyaluril 20 Naal Pocchu enru. The movie sucked big time ( more so as it was from Mukta movies)

  Ok I may have got the chronological order wrong but the fact is the three movies are very similar.
  Yaaro pls see my earlier posting. Ram gopal verma is the co-author of Thiruda thiruda so there is no question of MR aping anybody. Also the movie might have shortcomings but it is not a dud. Ditto for Vikram. Meera with the butterfly song would definitely qualify. May madham is another dud. The strangest pair in TAmil Film history perhaps Vineet( bad enough) with Sonali (Monali yaa? . That movie was a horror. Margazhi poove is a good song ( suyprabatham intelligently used)

  vikram second half was an unabashed copy of Indiana jones and the temple of doom.So kamal had only himself to blame.I used to see most of kamal movies on first day-for vikram,the mood in theatre was euphoric during the interval.By the time the film was over,it was finished.One was the concept of computer,ICBM must be above the heads of average film goer.and the missile looked so ordinary...

  I beg to differ.
  Movies that bombed at the box office include Karnan of those days to Hey Ram of today. I am sure you won't call them dud movies.
  
  As for good songs, I suppose most of us will readily admit on the qualities of a good song - one of which is definitely popularity.
  
  My quarrel with Yaaro is that unsuccessful movies such as Nizhalgal & Thiruda Thiruda cannot be called dud movies, just as totally-forgettable songs from Naanum Oru Thozhilaali cannot be called good songs.

  Nadodi Thendral was a dud movie with absolutely great songs by IR.

  ..The most super duper hit song, 'Ilamai enum Poongaatru' from the movie 'Pagalil Oru Iravu'(I guess, is a dud)..
  
  Pakalil oru iravu was a classy movie - far ahead of its time in the sense that there was no unnecessary melodrama, decent acting, and it had an interesting story - I think it was directed by IV Sasi. It might have flopped though - I watched it on video.
  
  Other great songs from dud movies are:
  
  mana malaiyum manjalum soodi - from vathiyaar veetu pillai (this song makes me wish I had a sister!)
  
  ennai thottu alli konda - from unnai nenachaen paatu padichaen (sublime song!)

  Guys one more to the list Sridhar directed
  "Oru Odai nadhiyaagiradhu" had in my opinion the
  most classical creations of IR
  Thalaiyai kuniyum thamaraiyE
  Thendral ennai muththamittadhu - The situation for this song is even more gross, Raghuvaran who is a father of a nine year old being treated by his wife for a promotion.
  Ths thread reminds me of the time when I was just out of college and working in CBE, I used to run every nook and corner of the city to watch these kinda movies just for thier songs.
  One of the candidates for a good song very badly picturised my vote would go to
  "kanmaniye kaadhal enbadhu karpaniyO" from 6 to 60.

  nizhalgal-cursed on many fronts.robert (or Rajasekar)who was the hero,slow script,had the misfortune to be relesed in same day as varumaiyin niram sigappu-which was one of the biggest hits of that year.
  Okay Nizhalgal flopped. But is it as dud. watch both the movies today you will find Nizhalgal to be a better movie on the topic of unemployment.
  Similarly Vedham puthithu got mixed reviews. I didn't like the movie the first time around. But while watching it in TV later I was fascinated by it. So commercial box office alone is not a criteria. ( It is one of the criteria but not the limiting one)

  back to topic, I agree with rajaG. declaring a movie as dud cannot be done unless we have something to quantify the quality of movies. box office success is the best. otherwise, it will be impossible to reach a consensus. I don't see a single unanimously voted dud movie in the list above.

  movies that will unanimously be considered a dud movie with good songs. My half-a-dozen..
  
  1) en swasa katre
  2) Naser's 2nd movie as director ("oru naal antha oru naal")
  3)Kannukul Nilavu
  4) Kaathal oviyam ( pls makkals intha movie yuck! )
  5) uzhavan
  6)Parthale Paravasam
  
  Thiruda Thiruda & Nizhalgal was by no means a dud movie.
  
  Nizhalgal, by a new director unfortunately came at a time when a vetran ace director was giving a movie with the same subject and hence it failed. Plus JUST 3 songs and a slow movie ..killed it even more.
  
  Thiruda Thiruda was trendy cool and liked by the college crowd still i say it was liked well in cities. but disliked by quite a few "perusu's".
  
  "meenkodi theril manmadha rajan" was a good catch. The movie is a dud but the song is super kool.
  
  Vikram was "moonraker" novel ( not movie) copied. I dont think sujatha needed to write a story . Ian fleming did everything already.
  
  
  if commercial success was a key then "iruvar", "unnal mudiyum thambi" would be considered dud movies.
  
  But if commercial success was excluded then my vote for the most horrible movie/song combo would be "chinna thambi". I cannot recall a more overrated movie ever in my life.I need 3 novel size books to vent out my hatred for that movie..

  Bharath: Chinna Thambi ya paththi kuRaiyaa? That was the fifth consecutive movie in which Kushboo came off age. :-)

  1. Senthamizh Pattu - another one of those chinnathambi hangovers from Prabhu. but great songs. my fav being vanna vanna, solli solli and adi komatha.
  
  2. Ratchagan - fabulous songs. especially Kanava and Nenje Nenje
  
  3. Kadhalar Dhinam - from the dumb Kadhir. Great Songs. Kadhalenum Thervezhudhi, Ninaichapadi
  
  4. Uyire - great songs
  
  5. Avatharam
  
  6. Samudhram - average movie. but good songs that took me by complete suprise. like azhagana chinna devadhai and kandupidi
  
  7. Alavandhan - movie was just about avg. but good songs un azhagukku, kadavul paathi.
  
  8. Mahanadhi - fantastic movie and songs but dont know if was commercially successful.
  
  9. Jaadi Malli - a regular balachandar movie. a huge flop(thanjavurla rendu naal thaan odithu). had good songs by Maragathamani especially Kamban Yengu Ponan, Marakkamudiyavillai and Solladi Bharatha Mata.
  
  10. Sticking with Maragathamani, Azhagan was a good movie and had great songs as well.
  
  Minsara kanavu, thiruda and iruvar are few movies that i really enjoyed and had equally impressive songs but didnt click commercially.;-(
