Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Subbu :-)
The song requires a bit of seductive voice, and I don't think PS has it. May be it is my mental block, but I just don't visualize her voice that way. a husky voice, a bit of breathing heavily, a seductiveness (like LRE singing "kaadhOdu thaan naan paaduvEn").. I don't think PS has shown it in this song :-)

bb (thangaL peryar ennavO?).
If you look at the film, the situation does not warrant 100% seductive nature throughout the song. Sripriya in the form of Latha, has lots of vengence and anger against Kamal and wants somehow to close his life. In between some buzzy tome required. All these were shown with exceeding expectation in that song.. Again I suggest you please look at the song seq and comment.

bb - thanks good recall. PS is just mediocre. But thank god Vani Jayaram did not sing this – too!!
If I remember correct oRe jIvan ondRE uLLam was a retake of song from the Hindi movie Nagin. Grapevine had it that naan kattil mElE was brainstormed with Rajan Nagendra (I am inclined to believe this).
This song was an anthem in Radio Cylone used to haunt us from all tea stalls. We used to hum the other song as “unnai eththanaimuRai paarthaalum sakikkavillai” :)
Huge loss for Sripriya - who had such a great name among people in industry that many leading actors appeared in his bilingual production natchaththiram - mostly for free. The theme of snakes taking seductive femme fatale for revenge is so successful in Hindi (launched Sridevi as the sex bomb :) up north). But neeya version 1, 2.2.3rc3 all bombed in tamil (but made money in Telugu).

Venkat, Sripriya produced only the tamil version (remake). "sivaranjani" (telugu) as "natchathiram". Not the original telugu!!

I am tempted to post a digression seeing a number of late 70s songs being featured on SOTD and DFers doing some personal reminiscing about the golden-olden days - days in which you listened to songs only if AIR or Ceylon aired it.
Songs used to be aired on the radio at 8:20 in the mornings after Akashvani's Hindi and English news bulletins, and used to conclude oddly at 9:16, the announcer unfailingly announcing the time to the nth second before signing off. I dont think the intermission for the ads existed before '84(maybe I am wrong here). The next transmission used be start at 12 noon, unless there was a test match played in India, whose coverage would then start at 9:55. Most kids then missed the songs since majority of the school buses start plying by 8:10. Evening 5:30 - 6:00 also featured songs but we were busy playing. Also songs would register better when you are supposed to get serious, like getting ready for school :)
In my kindergarden days, my dad used to drop me in school late after 930 almost every day so my hearing those songs happened only in those 2 KG years, since after that it was school bus. Some of the songs that I recollect hearing those days are 'En Iniya Pon Nilave, Poo Vannam Pola Nenjam, Appane Appane, Yedho Ninaivugal Kanavugal, Naane Naana and of course, Naan Kattil Mele.
A 3-4 year old is obviously unlettered at that time, so the song better have really catchy features to stay in the mind. (Eg, Ilaya Nila had that guitar arpeggio and Yesudhas's dhadha dhadha dha humming, which sounded attractive...Ithu Oru PonMazhai had that 'hey ho la la la' by SPB)
Not that Hindi songs weren't heard...Ek Duje KeLiye, Qurbani, Silsila were big hits in '81 and were constantly aired in TN homes(A 3rd std guy once boasted he had boarded a lorry to see Qurbani's night show!). But still our tamil songs left a significant impact. No wonder late 70s, early 80s represent the golden period, they were catchy, melodious and stay in the mind without compromising on quality.
Plus, I am all the more impressed to learn on SOTD that Poo Vannam was composed by Salil, a non south indian.
Apologies for the digress.

I'll just add and subtract one small letter to your qualifier, as the song to me is both rollicking and frolicking. It is a typical SG composition, and it combines their trademark shifts in arrangement and transition.
I find PS and SPB to be ideally suited to this song. Personally speaking, the songs which get into "simulated" and obvious sounds of arousal and sexiness, are just that - simulated and obvious.
PS's "dignified" image may clash with a few listeners when she sings songs like "Naan Kattil Mele," but that is not her problem. Her versatility and virtuosity has never been in doubt. In the 80s, songs like Orey Idam Nirandharam, Maampoovae Sirumainave, Mella Mella Unnaith Thottu, Padavandhatho Ganam, Vidiya Vidiya Solliththaruvaen,...all, in her voice, combined desire, modesty, individuality and youthfulness.
The mastery of an artiste should be observed in the care s/he takes in leaving something to the listener's imagination. The difference between a quick glimpse and a prolonged stare.
One only has to substitute SJs excesses (in similar songs) while listening to this number and see how it affects the inner eye.

wow.. excellent song selection.. SPB definitely dominated PS in this song IMO...Neeya was one of the trend setters in the snake movies I guess.. It was followed by a lot of movies with the same formulae which obviously bombed out... Neeya part 2 was named as 'Naane Varuven' and I think it had Rahman as the cast (not sure)...

now that PS, VJ, SJ have all been thanked or criticized for destroying/thankfully-not-given-a-chance-to-destroy this song, I wonder how the latter day legends like Vasundhara Das would have done :-)
Vasundhara:
kaLLamellaam kaanaa naan kaththirundhaen
kaadhai moodikka naanaalaip paarthirundhaen

My most fav song in Neeya is 'Oru kodi Inbangal Uruvaagum sondangal' sung by SPB and SJ.Naaz, just hear SJ in this song . I agree SJ has had her excesses in few songs (just like SPB has done in few songs too), but in songs requiring restraint ,she has done it too, like this one from the same film. She brings all the needed sensuality in just the way she sings (Oh...Oh... asaindhaadum azhagu kolangal. Listen to the way SJ matches SPB's crooning in this song in the line megham vedithaal enna ).

Thamizhan,
The only thoing good about your post is your name, but after reading the post I urge you to get a new pseudonym 'cos a true Thamizhan has enough perception to notice a friendly discussion between friends, a true Thamizhan has enough panbu to deem a discussion or a debate with enough class and decorum, a true Thamizhan also has the basic intellect to decipher for the difference between owning a CD and discussing a songs with friends by taking them one at a time. You should confine yourself to the other degrading threads, they deserve you and we deserve better than you.

Thiru,
I applaud your sentiment but unless we commit ourselves to rid the virus it will continue to infect. I don't believe in sharing precious space with malignant growths. They should be wiped out by force, collective force would be nice, but if I have the energy and the will I'll do it on my own.

hi, hi, Mr. Thamizhan :)))
Do us a favour, excercise your first choice, do not come to this thread (or anywhere near this site). No one forces you to drool for these bones like a dog. Will save a lot of trouble, if you realize that your bone lies elsewhere and move there, leaving us in peace. Have a great day and good bye!
