OISG,
I admire the song's poetry, not its grammar. Much to my chagrin TFM lyrics have taken gross liberties in pluralizing nouns that don't need it and worse, use verbs in the singular tense in disagreement with the subject.
e.g. "ennangal varugindrana" is the right form but quite often I hear it written and sung as, "ennangal varugiradhu".
Muthulingam chided VM for using "kaatrugal" in "adhikaalai pani kaatrugal veesidak kandaen" and asked, kaatrukkaedhu panmai? VM came up with some lame explanation about vaadaik kaatru, anal kaatru, etc. He also shot back at Muthulingam and asked Nandu eppo kunju porikka aarambichudhu in reference to Muthulingam's error in "Daddy Daddy".
Of course if there's an inclination to pick a song apart it can be done easily to any song. I remember some brainiac in this forum quoting "jarigai neliyum saelai kondu malayai mooda paarkkiraal" by Kannadhaasan as a perverse line.
On another topic. You brought back to me the forgotten "solla vekkama irukku sokkamma", SPB is jollu personified in that song. The nasal Suruli voice is still ringing in my ear. BTW, I think the second line is "niceaa niceaa killip paatthuttaan". Didn't Suruli play one of his many hermaphrodites in this movie?

OISG- I thought the lyrics of ‘Kadal meethiley’ too were good- I have not seen the film, but going by the lyrics, I suppose Mohan is desperately searching for Radha and the search is in vain, for she is still elusive–the lyrics fit the situation so aptly:
Kadal meethiley than meenai thedinaan
Perum kaatiley than maanai thedinaan
Engey un kaal pona paadhai amma
Ingey un oru kannai paaraai amma
Seetha endru Sriramane alaimodhidum Ramayanam
Kanngal sellum dhoorangal engum
Kannanavan kaanal neer kandaan
Koodu vitta kokilam
Paadavillai engenum
Koyil seithaan, Deivam illai
Rekha—
Pookal illai pooncholai kandaan
Poovai illai nedunchaalai kandaan
Saalai yengum vaaganam
Maanidargal naadagam
Thannai kandaan, thanimai kandaan
Rekha--
(Hope the lyrics are accurate)- Great song, sung feelingly by SPB.
Another great thing about the song is- it is so easy to sing it, even for me, and that’s saying a great deal :))
I’m afraid I too know very little about Yaarukku Yaar Kaaval and Pennukku Yaar Kaaval.
YYK had a great SPB-PS duet ‘ Sippiyin ulley’. KJ Joy was the MD for Antharangam Oomaiyaanathu as well. The latter film had a memorable KJY solo ‘Malargal soriyum poomarangal’.
PYK ( SJ’s ‘Kanne kannana kanna, ponne poo meni vanna’, with the eunuch’s lines (Pillaiyaa naanum porakkum pothu--) in between, was very popular). The film starred Jayachitra, I think. Ramesh Naidu gave some good songs in the film Mela thaalangal as well (Jaishankar & Sripriya)- I remember the SPB-SJ duet ‘Aananda veenai naan meettum pothu’. In a remote recording center, I once chanced upon a record of a film called Devan Sedhukkiya Sirpangal, and the music was credited to Ramesh Naidu. It had a SPB solo on one side. I eagerly asked the owner to play it, and I was bitterly disappointed that the record had so many scratches that playing it continuously for more than two seconds was impossible :(

A soothing song, almost like a lullaby. SPB's voice is as soft and cushiony, like a melding of chinna chinna megams. Thanks for this evocation!
If I remember right (which in not often these days) there was another SPB/SJ duet in Kaaturkenna Veli, which went "Bhoomi Katalai Ittadhu..." A fast-paced song, which always reminded me of "Thottam Konda Rajave..." from Pagalil Or Iravu?

Chiththirame Chithtirame, is news to me. I have not heard these songs...guess I never will :-(
The film Pennukku Yaar Kaval was the tamil remake of the telugu Chilarakkottu Chittamma, yes?

Udhaya can you explain me the difference between
"ennangal varugindrana" and "ennangal varugiradhu"?
Thanks

Hermaphrodite might be the correct term to describe the character's physiology. How do I know, there is a line in the same song in which the "genitalia" question is addressed when Suruli sings: "Enakku Pavadai Draayer Koduththanga..." referring to his moment of birth.
The common usage "eunuch" is definitely wrong, as that refers exlusively to "castrated" men (as opposed to Hermaphrodite which refers to a person naturally (not surgically tampered) born with genitalia of both the sexes.) In the Indian context this distinction is seldom made, in northern and southern languages.
Regarding neologistic "plurals" - I am still wondering what "Un Kobangal Sugama..." Is that "misgivings" past, present and continuous? :-)

Ramki,
It's the basic grammar rule that the subject and verb agree in number.
ennam is a singular subject and should have a matching singular verb varugirathu
ennangal is a plural subject and should have the plural verb varugindrana

This is related to an earlier SOTD.
OISG, I was listening to "Potri Paadadi " from Devar Magan and just now read your post here :
"We used to sing this song(Aarodum Mannil) for the pallavi and when it moves to charanam move to "Enna solli enna padum mathavanga kannu padum" from Devar Magan.Stage singers can try it out.
In one session one singer improvised further and added "Thaye unthan per sollumbothu ithayathil" from ARR s Vandemataram. It was so magical that ARR s humming can sit over SG s last line comfortably.
All 3 have a Harikambodhi pattern....that could be one reason. It is amazing that 3 men from different era and background ,portray the "Mannin perumai" in their songs with identical feel. One reason why TFM stands out in comparison!"
good observation! Its amazing indeed.Great minds do think alike sometimes :-) Pallavi of Aarodum Mannil with charanam of Potri Paadadi is a seamless fit. It would be a great tune overall to hear.

Song of the Day: naan kattil mElE kaNdEn veNNilaa from neeyaa.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/naankattil.rm
- A rollicking song by Shankar-Ganesh. Sung by SPB and PS. The way the song starts off is very good, and SPB has done a fabulous job (the same cannot be said about PS, though. An Anuradha Sriram would have done justice to this song).
- Neeyaa also had the song "orE jeevan ondrE uLLam". It was a Devar Film (?).

- About moving from one song to another, I always start off singing this song and move off to "indhira lOgaththu sundhari raaththiri" :-)

Cracker of a song from the under-rated duo, another '79 gem.

bb,
You deserve a dose of whupass for that PS comment, but I know you threw that in there just to get a rise out of me, so I won't bite. This was a great situational song with such tongue-in-cheek humor by Vaali:
the woman wants to seduce and kill the man, she sings her intention subtly while the man knows what she's after and leads her on with his own deceptive plans:
She:
kaalamellaam kannaa naan kaathirundhaen
kadhai mudikka nannaalaip paarthirundhaen
He:
adhu theriyaadhadhaa naan ariyaadhadhaa
adhu theriyaadhadhaa naan ariyaadhadhaa
...
She:
oru uyir vaazhndhida iru udal vaendumaa?
oru uyir vaazhndhida iru udal vaendumaa?
He:
ammaadi un aasai pollaadha paeraasai
ammaadi un aasai pollaadha paeraasai
Neeya wasn't a Devar film, it was Sripriya's first personal production. The movie wasn't bad for a campy horror flick. The soundtrack was excellent. This song and "orae jeevan" got a lot of recognition, but the overlooked gem was "Unai eththanai murai paarthaalum salippadhillai". Again, let me dwell on lyrics since no one else seems to anymore.
Most songs use swarams as filler lyrics but this one uses the swaram as wonderful word play. I believe the lyricist was Pulamaipithan.
ni tha ma sa ri tha (as in "nithamaa sari thaa")
kaaman kani nee
ka ni nee pa dha maa (as in "kani nee padhamaa")
kaadhal suram nee

As Udhaya said, Neeya was Sripriya's home production and was a remake of the Hindi movie Nagin. (Devar's "snake" movie was Vellikizhamai Virudham)
Orey jeevan ondrey ullam, the most popular song in the movie was copied from the original Hindi song. I am not sure of the other songs.
With the success Neeya, Sripriya made another movie Natchathiram - a muti starrer, also with Shankar-Ganesh as the MD. The movie was a big loss, inspite of appearances of Kamal & Rajini. Aval oru menakai by SP Bala is the unforgetable song in Natchathiram.
Not many people know of the sequel to Neeya. Yes Neeya 2 was also released with a rehash of the Orey jeevan song yet again. It was a complete disaster.

I dont Agree with BB
This is such an Excellent Song where in both SPB & PS would hav Excelled in Their REnding Style..
That too PS singing yenge un then Kinnam indha yen poo mutham...
and as Udhaya mentioned Vaali's Strength till now is that..
Telling the incident in that line with Rhyming..
Wow..
"

Kadhai mudikka Nannaalai paarthirundhen"

bb, how to show my anger against you.... urrrrrr...
FYI, PS overshadowed SPB in that song. Esp, after the line "enge un then kiNNam.. indha en poongonnam..nam...namm"; she starts "nann kattil meley kaNum veNNilaaaaaa Unai katti kondu pesum peNNilaaaa"... Classic molding of voice.. SG never thought of going to anyone othern than PS.. It was a great rendering...!
Anyways bb, thanks for the lovely song and of course provoking junta :-)
