Pagai konda ullam thuyarathin illam
Theeraatha kobam yaarukku laabam
This song by SP Bala also came out during the same period. Isn't this song in Puthu Vellam?

LP, Pagai konda was rendered by KJY from "Yellorum Nallavarey" under Gemini Films. This was the film (FLOP in all 3 languages Tamil, Telugu and Hindi) produced by Mr. Balasubramaniam (S/o. SS Vasan) after SSV passed away. Acted by Muthuraman, Manjula, Lokesh (Kannada) and Jayanthi. This song is an "asireeri song".

Thanks Subbu.
This is ridiculous, for I know what you just said. Had a total memory lapse just now. :)
Well, to save some dignity, Ellorum Nallavare and Puthu Vellam came out in ONE LP. :)
Slight digression:
LP here is not Lollu Party but Long Playing Records @ 33.3 rpm. Haa, those glorious days of LPs, EPs, 45 rpms, 78 rpms.
MKT Sampoorna Ramayana records were sold in sets of ten records!

Is this by Kannadasan? One of those very many provocative songs from him. PS voice gives more watery and invigorating feeling than the background score. 'Rajaveettu kaNNukutti ..' is another deft rendition by PS.

rameshb, good to see you here. How are you? Can you send me a mail (balaji@newtfmpage.com). Yes, I think the lyrics is by Kannadasan.
Song of the Day: chinna chinna from kaatrukkenna vEli.

- Udhaya includes this album in his list of landmark albums of the century. He writes:
"Panchu Arunachalam who gave the world Ilayaraja also gave TFM Sivaji Raja in this superb debut. How this artist got forgotten is a mystery that still eludes me. From the vibrant "Kadal Meethilae", to the seductive "Rekha Rekha", from the celebrating "Naan Vanangukiraen" to the nostalgic "Chinna Chinna Megam", which remains the best kept secret in TFM history, there's so much energy and spunk in this soundtrack that it's a shame Sivaji Raja still hasn't seen the limelight. "
- Sivaji Raja started off as a singer, and sang a few songs under MSV. He then became a Music Director. He was the MD for a handful of movies only. He also introduced Karthik as a singer. This movie *ed Mohan and Radha. The orchestration of this song is quite different, and has the northern feel, a change from the regular songs.

bb, that is true. I used to watch out for Sivaji Raja. But, he was not consistent in later movies. However, in the IR wave, many composers suffered and went into oblivion. Sankar-Ganesh, Chandra Bose suffered intense damage!

the movie despite the "usual -different love story " and Mohan was watchable.Thengai Srinivasan carried the film with his brand of comedy.Ofcourse there was Geetha too !
I remember this scene very well:
Thengai(Heroine s father) travelling with his family in car gets into trouble in high way as the car stops.A visbily irritated thengai would be waiting for help.Mohan and Kailash would come for help seeing Radha.
Kailash(with JOL): Sir,athu yaru unga family a?
Angry Thengai: Ellaya!Pakkathu veetu family!ThaLLIkittu vanthirukken!
Katrikkenna veli is certainly a "Golden" one like Maragathamani s "Azahagan".Poor chap did some telugu movies but couls not sustain the IR onslaught of 80s.
Sivaji Raja s "yyaro oruthi ezhuthugiral" from Anbulla Athan(he sang for Kalaivanan)-his voice was a replica of MSV s voice.

Besides the obvious beauty of the melody, music, and SPB's crooning, the lyrics brim with fresh analogy and word play:
pirivaana kaadhal nenjil sugamaana soagangal
mazhaikkaala poovin meedhu irukkindra eerangal
maedaigalin oaram jaadai seyyum poovai
paarvaidhanil nooru pandhi vaikkum paavai
koadhaimagal paeraich chonnaal raagam malarum
...
anal meedhu pookkum andha kodikkindru vaer illai
idhayathin suvaril undhan peyarindri vaerillai
kanni ilam pookkal kai ezhuthuk kaetkum
ullirundhu soagam kan vizhiththup paarkkum
gnyabagangal kannil indru muthuk kulikkum

There is a famous number "Rekha rekha" sung by PS and Jolly Abraham, for which the music was scored by Sivaji Raja. Is this song from "kaatrukkenna vEli"?

Vairamuthu in his early days .........
Sugamana sogangal ...(closer to Kannil enna kaarkalam s last line "sugamaga Azahavendum),eerangal(VM s Tamil professor won t be happy!),anal meethu pookum poo........yeah! we know!We know!
The lines "Seetha endru Sriramane alaimothidum Ramayanam" in the Kadal meethile song was popular those days among College students.
This song "Chinna" is good stage song.( In the movie too "Mike Holding" Mohan sings it on the stage with Geetha doing the humming)

Thanks bb - Arumaiyaana thervu! Thanks to Udhaya too for the detailed description and lyrics. (Vairamuthu?)
Btw, the humming is by Anitha (who was actor Suresh's wife, for a while)
As Udhaya rightly says, Kaatrukkenna Veli-1982 was a sensational album and all the songs were super hits, despite the film's failure. This was a remarkable achievement for a first time MD.
My pick is the awesome SPB solo: Kadal meethiley - especially the lines 'Engey un kaal pona paadhai amma, ingey un oru kannai paaraai amma, Seetha endru Sriramane alai modhidum Ramayanam--' and SPB gives a pause and suddenly yells 'Rekha', and the music that follows- Unusual, arresting, excellent song.
'Rekha, Rekha,'- Jolly Abraham & PS, with its wonderful opening guitar notes, is an unforgettable duet.
Udhaya, how does 'Naan Vanangugiren' go? I don't recall it :( I do remember another song from the film- a SPB-SJ duet, in which she celebrates love, and he condemns it- 'Kaadhalile vilaivadhu kanneerey'
Sivaji Raja, to the best of my knowledge, composed music for two more Tamizh films: Raman Sriraman and Chithirame Chithirame- both 1985.
Ramam Sriraman, stg. Vijayakanth (dual role), Jyothi and Sathyaraj, had a SPB-PS duet, which ranks in my ever-favourite list- It goes like 'Kanni thendral veesum neranagal, sanga thamizh paadum kaalangal, Idhuvey thirunaal, Sugamey inimel, vinnai thodum ennangal engengo--'
Chithirame Chithirame also was a dismal failure. But the songs were played ever so often in Radio Ceylon's Pongum Poompunal. It had a catchy MV-VJ duet 'Aasaiyulla roja chendu, adhil then edukkum kaadhal vandu, thangathu rathiname, nenjukkul thangiya chithirame--'. MV's solo' Paappa chinna papa, paartha mella paartha' was an enjoyable dabbangithu number. VJ's 'Dhaagam edukkudhu adikkadi, idhu mazhaikku yengum malarkkodi' was, well--, intoxication at its best. There was perhaps a solo by PS as well- I think it is 'Vizhiyengum aaduthu ilamai, vazhi ondru theduthu idhayam, maaraatha paruvanagley'- haunting high-pitched song in which PS mouths some dialogues as well- 'Vittil naan, vizhunguvatho sudaro'- in fact the song ends with her wry query- 'Veenai naan, meetuvathu vidhiyo'?
Sivai Raja was an original and innovative composer who made a mark in the few opportunities that came his way.
Addendum: When once (1999) on a visit to my aunt's house in Shenoy Nagar, Chennai, she casually remarked that her tenant upstairs next-door was a person called Sivaji Raja, who takes music tuitions and he told her that he had done music for some films as well!
Imagine my surprise! I went there promptly and had a great chat with him. He is such a simple, unassuming person. When I spoke to him about his films, he was surprised that some one still remembers his songs. He said he had ungergone some bitter experiences and since he was not capable of similar machinations,he could'nt survive. He now does programmes for AIR and also takes music classes. At my request, he did sing a few lines from 'Kanni thendral veesum nerangal'- Oh, the enchantmment!

In my next visit to Chennai I would like to visit with this great talent. I live near Shenoy nagar. They also like to chat with fans.
OISG: i like to share one joke a pandiarajan film. He wants to just go a short distance in the auto and asks the auto driver: Meter aa?
The driver responds unhesitatingly: Illey, Motoru!

Saravanan,
The rest of Kadal Methile lyrics were pedastrian.
pookal illai poonjaolai kandan,
povayillai nedunchalai kandan,
Kovil Kandan,Deivam illai etc.,
But as you said SPB s loud "Rekha" is a winner.
Rekha (jolly-PS) was written by Panju who produced the film.(not under PA Arts,I suppose)Prob the only occasion Panju ever worked with an MD other than IR, post-Annakili.This song sounds more of a "AIR Mellisai" when you compare with the other songs of the movie which are really class. The RDBsque guitar was the highlight.
I need your input on "Yarukku Yaar Kaval" (KJ Joy) and "Penukku Yaar Kaval" (Ramesh Naidu) .The latter had a great SPB song for Suruli(dressed as enuch)
Solla vekkama irukku sokkamma
nice a nice a enna kiLLittan
