OK, I will retract the statement.
But I hope you will agree with me that saying "A mediocre song!!!Not the song of my day." is totally unnecessary. I am not saying that she has no right to feel like that, but why the need to post such a negative comment here. "
Lollu,
Udhaya cant agree or support with you coz see his posting on SOTD "Mandram vandha thendralukku" some time ago..he he..:-)

"I couldn't care less if anyone were to criticise it, but it just made my day," - Exactly!! now, if we could just follow this consistently in newtfmpage...
great SOTD. my only crib: Sivaji could've toned down his trademark histrionics a little bit.

great song for the weekend. nice folk tune with lovely flute interludes. as simple as the farmer's heart. in the thokaiyara there is a line:
'kudi uyara kOn uyarum' - what is the meaning of kOn here. someone highlight please.

geeth, kOn = arasan.
This is an avvaiyaar poem, that talks about how irrigation is important. here's a c&p from some site:
One of her greatest poems however had a Koan-like brevity. She was walking, she always and only walked, to a great gathering of poets in a neighboring kingdom and she could see the havoc wrought by the prevailing drought. The other poets, being royal guests and traveling in closed palanquins or carriages were pleasantly insulated from the misery all around. They indulged in the typical hyperbole about the greatness of the king and the land but Avvaiyar was not participating in the contest as she usually did. Finally she rose and said she had a brand new poem.
"Varappuyara."
Then she sat down to the consternation of the assemblage. What was this? One word! The more intelligent realized that she had played on Varappu Uyara - 'Let bunds be raised' but the king alone realized that she had gently rebuked him for failing in his duties to keep his irrigation network in order. If the Bunds and dams had been in a proper condition of repair then there would have been enough water in storage and this disaster could have been avoided. Carried away in an exaltation of piety the king promised to raise more bunds. The next day however he began to have doubts, it would be such a drain on his treasury. Realizing his state of mind, Avvaiyar sang,
"It is only by taking away that the sculptor creates a work of art
those actions which seem to take away add to mankind's real wealth."

thanks bb, it was nice to read it. but i thought kOl in the thokaiyara as 'arasan' - kOn uyara kOl uyarum.
if kOn is king then what could be the kOl above him ?

We used to sing this song for the pallavi and when it moves to charanam move to "Enna solli enna padum mathavanga kannu padum" from Devar Magan.Stage singers can try it out.
In one session one singer improvised further and added "Thaye unthan per sollumbothu ithayathil" from ARR s Vandemataram. It was so magical that ARR s humming can sit over SG s last line comfortably.
All 3 have a Harikambodhi pattern....that could be one reason. It is amazing that 3 men from different era and background ,portray the "Mannin perumai" in their songs with identical feel. One reason why TFM stands out in comparison!

Great song.
Takes one back not only to the 60s but also to the farming times.
There has not been many Tamil songs with many male singers. How nice if we could have a song by SP Bala, Hariharan and Unnikrishnan? :)

bb- belated thanks for the last two songs- great selections.
Kaviyama nenjin oviyama is a masterpiece. However, in my opinion, the film didn’t quite capture the essence of Akilan’s engrossing tale. Whilst Kamala was exceptionally suited for the role of Senkamalam, MN Rajam wasn’t what quite the Kalyani whom one pictured while reading the book.
The song comes when MNR and Sivaji visit Agra in the company of VKR and Sandhya. The atmosphere of the Taj leaves MNR shaken- she suddenly imagines Sivaji and herself as Shah Jahan and Mumtaaz! At the end of the song, she faints! (Quite understandable!)I feel MGR and KRV were more pleasing to the eye in ‘Pavazhkkodiyile muthukkal poothaal’.
While on Isaichithar CSJ, his last song in tfm was from Dharmangal Sirikkindrana (perhaps unreleased, late 70s vintage)- the song ‘Poda ulagathai therinjukka, buthi irundhaal purinjikka’ brings back memories of the majestic CSJ of the 50s.
Thiru: I am sorry I don’t recall the TRM song you mention. (Thiru thirunnu muzhikkiren:)) A similar song, however, is ‘Ingey iruppatha, angey varuvathaa, mangala nayagiyey sollamma’ by MLV from Maamiyaar Mechiya Marumagal

What was CSJ s last song with MSV-TKR?I think they had a good time with CSJ in Pasavalai, thangapadumai. Were MSV-TKR involved with RathaKaneer apart from CSJ?

A good song in the recent past... IMO, the song had more resemblance to 'poovukellam siragu mulaithadhu' from Uyirodu uyiraga.. The fast beats in the middle didnt go well with the melodious nature of the song ... VS has read the minds of the audience and now knows how to make musical hits unlike his previous ventures like karna, jaihind etc...
Thats ok saravanan... I remember TRM singing this song at a temple with a pole (Thadi)..Though the song you mentioned had similar lyrics, it was a male singer and defintely not MLv....Thanks anyway..

bb- Good one. So gentle and caressing. Good lyrics too (Thaamarai?)- attractive lines like Oru mazhai enbathu oru thuli thaana Kanney— I love the place where he sings Nil endru kandithaai—just when I am expecting Poi ondrai oppithaai, Ayyayyo thappithaai (like the ending the first charanam), this sudden change comes as a great surprise- and the lines are so touching: Nil endru kandithaai, Ul sendru dhandithaai, sol endru genjathaan-sollamal vanjithaai-
Btw, who does the humming in the interlude?
My personal pick from the film is, however, Theradi veedhiyil devadhai vandhaal- just for the mischief and fun-filled lyrics.
OISG- I don’t think CSJ sang for V-R after Thangappadhumai and V-R didn’t have a hand in Rathakkanneer.

The song also has some celtic sounding interludes imported, VS seesm to be the pick of the MDs these boring years. He seems to have been a pretty good success with Dhool too.

Song of the Day: thuLi thuLi from pudhu veLLam.

- A PS solo after a while. A good song by M.B.Srinivasan, sung by P.Suseela. I find the orchestration of this song unique, though I am not able to put my finger on why I feel so.
- According to OISG and Saravanan, Pudu veLLam *ed Sivakumar ,(Kannada)Manjula and RS Manohar. 'Puthu Vellam' came in 1975. Other songs are "Ethu pongi varugindra Puthu veLLam,Oru thangu thadayindri ethu sellum" by TMS, 'Naan raja veettu kannukkutti'-PS and 'Erumai annachi'-TMS. It was directed by K Vijayan.
- Thread on M.B.Srinivasan: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/8647.14046.03:08:14.html . The all-time great song, "thennan keeRRu oonjalilE" from Paadhai theriyudhu paar, by MBS, was featured in the SOTD earlier. That song roughly chalked up the most number of hits among SOTD songs.

A great lovely song is "thuLi thuLi". After the start of the pallavi, a "anh" and then again the pallavi. That "anh" is something sexy!!
After each Charanam, the "lala lala lala laaaaahh ahaha ahahaha.." is so sweet and am mesmorised.
A bitter bit about "pudhu vellam"... many dirty words were used in the movie... that too by the heroine to accuse the hero (initially she hates him)... like "echa porukki"... many times this was used.. Kannada Manjula was forced to learn Tamil and her accent was so rediculous, esp...this word :-)
