DIGRESSION
Uthaya
OK, I will retract the statement.
But I hope you will agree with me that saying "A mediocre song!!!Not the song of my day." is totally unnecessary. I am not saying that she has no right to feel like that, but why the need to post such a negative comment here.
Thiru
It is my opinion that lyrical essence has improved considerably in the 90s when compared with the 80s. Although there have been gems in the 80s, the vast majority of songs gave the fill-in-the-blanks kind of feelings, what with words such as maane, thene, kanne, etc. Moreover, vulgarity was at its peak during that season.
90s saw a rejuvenation in presentation of songs although it too had its share of bloopers. Songs were a lot more wholesome too.

Song of the Day: kaaviyamaa nenjin Oviyamaa from paavai viLakku.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kaaviyamaa.rm
- Here's another Chidambaram Jayaraman's song after the one in sampoorNa ramayaNam. I was talking with a friend today, and he mentioned that CSJ deserved to be in the TFM hall of fame, and didn't get his due in Tamil Films. It seems that the mainstream media just forgot that he existed and assumed that he was dead, and it was left to his daughter to write in kumudam or somewhere that he was still alive.
- Thread on CSJ: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/16830.4.html
- "vaNNath thamizh peNNoruththi" from the same movie was featured in SOTD last year.
- Manisegaran writes in detail about Paavai viLakku in his KVM series here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/18367.1133.01.54.38.html
He writes:
PAAVAI VILAKKU (1960)
This is based on Akilan's novel. Sivaji Ganesan, MN Rajam, Santhiya, Sowkar Janaki, VK Ramasamy Kamala Lachumanan are the main stars here. This film would boast of some of the best songs KVM had left for posterity.
C.S. Jayaraman and P. Suseela sing this famous song picturised on Sivaji and MN Rajam:
Kaviyama Nenjin Oviyama
Athan Jeeviyama
Deiveega Kaathal Chinnamaa

Lollu Party, such comments have been posted here before even when some IR songs were featured as SOTD. Everyone has a right to post their opinions here irrespective of whether its praise or criticism. So get over it and lets get on with some meaningful discussions. All that I have seen you doing is mock some IR fans in all threads. Thats probably much much worse than criticising IR/ARR/whoever songs.

I hate to go on and on about the same subject. Ok, this shall be my last posting in this thread on this matter.
Vijay
If you think it is perfectly alright to ask "why are you still listening to Manasellam," then I guess, I have the right to ask similar questions, and I probably have a bloody good reason for it, just like you had.
Secondly, I never make a careless post. If you have any problems with any of my postings in any of the threads, take me on there, instead of damaging a good thread such as this.
Thirdly, if you want rock evidence on how some of your favourite "IF Fans" can damage things, check out Ehsaan's thread, and feast your eyes on how they have hijacked a complete thread.
Sorry guys. And thanks for bearing with me. No more digression from me, in this thread.

It will be a great sin on my part if I do not talk about SOTD. :)
Somehow or other, I have always found CSJ's voice not very suitable for Sivaji and when I first saw this movie, I just could not accept it.
In any case, CSJ was the playback singer for Sivaji's first movie Parasakthi.
This song was shot against the background of Taj Mahal. Could be the first for a Tamil movie.

A better topic would be "IR's psychopathic Fans"
in the IRs psychedelic songs thread. Me wondering about the quality of Manasellam songs is different from you attacking fans like Mythila and others personally in every thread. So dont try to pretend that both are somehow the same.
I dont wish to digress further too. Lets get on with the next SOTD.

Posting your opinion on SOTD, favorable or not, is perfectly fine. Just do it and move on, though. Let's not harp on it like that's the greater purpose here. Once again, in defense of "chandhiranai":
Good points:
-charanam lyrics were original and sung intelligibly
-no one from IR's family or North India sang it (the former group has contempt for pleasant vocals, the latter has contempt for Thamizh)
-I would much rather listen to this 24/7 than listen to recent SOTDs like "Kaasu Maela" even once again in my lifetime
Bad points:
-the damn song still draws so many distracting posts
-there are thousands of songs out there better than this
All in all though, with all the work bb does in putting up these songs, bothering to make each one unique and significant in one way or another, we being the typically pesky Indians choose to pick out the problems rather than appreciate the efforts someone does on our behalf, that's what makes us pitiable people. Let's move the hell on, shall we?
Sivaji was quoted early in his career to have said, "No one but CSJ should sing for me." Of course, the TMS wave swept every other male singer under.
During IR's early phase someone asked him to use CSJ in one of his movies during a veternary college function. He must've thought the suggestion hilarious that within months of that function, he had Malaysia Vasudevan unflatteringly ape CSJ in "Aanandha Thaen Kaatru Thaalaattudhae". Had CSJ gotten that chance, that song would've been something to behold now. Yes, CSJ was alive at that time in case youy're wondering.
KVM had many gems in his majestic career. Paavai Vilakku ranks up there with the best of them.

Lollu party, SOTWE enna song of the weekend-aa? Here it is.
Song of the Day: aarOdum maNNil from pazhani.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/aarodum.rm
- MD: MSV-TKR. Sung by TMS, P.B.Srinivas and Seergazhi Govindarajan.
- The lyrics can be found in our PPP page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/aarodum.html
- What I like about this song is the rustic feeling, that of a farmer ploughing his field. The song starts off with "varappu uyara neer uyarum" and then a wonderful flute piece sets in.
- In the "Creativity of MSV" thread, Sriram Lakshman writes:
For his innovation without compromising on melody, you can go back to the 50's and 60's and there are a lot of songs that can leave you spell-bound. Have you heard 'aarodum maNNil' from pazhani? This is one of the greatest folk songs ever composed.Wonderful counterpoints too (pretty much on the same lines as Yamuna nathi inge). Srikanth, have you heard this song ? If so, your views please.
Three stanzas , all with different tunes. After all, who could bring up images of a ploughed field with a flute alone? Believe me guys, nowhere will you here such a great usage of Pahadi raag.
I believe MSV's greatness should not be worked out on the basis of his usage of raagas alone. His reaction to music itself was very instinctive which reflects in his compositions and thus several tunes of his do not conform to any raag as such. Even when he used some raagas (to him, most of the time, a raag was just a combination of notes and he couldn't care less for the gamakams that were traditionally associated with the raag), the original character would be totally overridden.
You could notice some sort of Iyarkai Varnanai in "Aarodum mannil engum" song from "Pazhani".
Pattu vanna selai kattee mutham sinthum nellamma
paruvam vantha pennai pole naanam enna sollammaa
annan thambi naalvar undu enna vendum kelamma
aruvadai kaalam unthan thirumana naalamma
In these lines "Nellu" is compared with a girl ready for marriage.
- Rameshb notes in the old songs thread:
Of all the three singers , TMS's expressions are more captivating ( i am not taking away any credits from SG or PBS by saying this) than the rest. He delivers with a zeal giving kinda punch for those lines
"kai kattich chEvai seithu, kaNgaL kettu uLLam kettu, poi solli pichchai kEttal aNNai bhoomi gEli seivAL".
SG excels in his high pitch rendering taking it from TMS and PBS, 'oorodum sErnthunnlaam...aaaaaaa....!'

Thank you so much bb, for such a wonderful SOTWE!
I couldn't care less if anyone were to criticise it, but it just made my day, not to mention the weekend. :)
Such a lullaby song, putting the listener on a completely relaxing mode. Beautiful lyrics, enchanting music, wonderful singing makes this song a treasure of TFM.
The first song that comes to mind for Ponggal, the first song that comes to mind when thinking about rural TN, the first song that comes to mind when talking about Tamil culture. A splendour that words cannot describe.
Pazhani the movie had Sivaji, SSR, Muthuraman and not forgetting MR Ratha.
While watching the movie long ago, I couldn't help being amazed that all these actors had their heirs in Prabhu, Kartik and Radha Ravi - could have made a Pazhani II. :)
Other good songs in Pazhani were Annan ennadaa thambi ennadaa, Ithayam irukkindrathe thambi, Ullathukulle olinthiruppathu and Vatta vatta paaraiyile.
