Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.

About "Chandhiranai", I didn't care for the song based on the pallavi after the first listen. But the charanam lines are well written and well sung that it grew on me. Certainly not ARR's best, but I'm a fan of lyrics in songs unlike many and I like this song for that one aspect.

Udhaya, I certainly dont want to bring any fan club or secularism to this so-far clean thread.. my view was that when people have discussed about raagas, songs based on the same raaga as the SOTD, line by line description of songs, about the lyricist etc for other songs, there is a lull when it came to ARR songs. Being an ARR fan, I would like to read some reviews/discussions/opinions on those songs from others.... May be its just a coincidence of people not visiting the forum on those days... My notion was certainly not to bring this thread to disrepute...bb, remove my posting if you find it irrelevant...

I've tried to dechiper these two lines many times... blame it on hariharan's pronounciation I never got the right lyrics.. Is it
'thodangiya nilayil idhu mudippadhu thaan periya thollai' ?
or
'thodugudhal Elidhal idhai mudippadhu thaan periya thollai' ?

Thiru, Hariharan sings:
"thodangudhal migha eLidhu
mudippadhu thaan periya thollai".

I think you have misunderstood Thiru throroughly.
Thiru
Most of the ARR fans have been driven out by the HCIRFs, like Mythila above.
Decent music fans by large also do not post much, except for occassional postings such as by Uthaya.
This is the sad case of this forum now.

Song of the Day: Bit Songs from Sree and Sigaram.
We feature two bit songs sung by SPB. These are gems that we can listen to, just to take in SPB's singing.
1. http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kalakala.rm
- This Song, Kala kalavena, appears in the movie Sree, that came out last year. The music is by T.S.Muralidharan. The film itself was an awful one, *ing Surya. This was the first film of T.S.Muralidharan, who scored the music for an album by Manoj (Bharathiraja's son) and Meena earlier.
2. http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/nithiyathil.rm
- "Niththiyathtil iru pErum kalandhu pOvOm" is from Sigaram. The music is by SPB himself. I guess the lyrics is by Vairamuthu, seeing such lines as "puvi eerppu maiyaththai kadandhup pOvOm". The next thing might be crossing a blackhole :-) The song is sung when SPB sends a love letter to Radha.
- The other great bit song in this movie, "pulikku pirandhavanE" was featured in SOTD earlier.

Before we pull our hair in frustration, can you please tell us what song Saravanan hinted and you understood. :)

Lollu Party, A.L.Raghavan and others sang a song called "april fool" in the movie panith thirai :-)
BTW, I came to know today that the guy who acts as vadivukkarasi's husband in the sun tv serial "metti oli" is A.L.Raghavan!

bb- Sutrum bhoomi sutrum varai, sooriyan nilavu kaayum varai nilladha 'Alaigal'aippoi Metti Oli endru solli vitteergaley:)
Btw- AL Raghavan, in real life, is actress MN Rajam's husband. Addendum: ALR has acted as one of the heroes in 'Kallum Kaniyagum'-1968, which he jointly produced with TMS. No prizes for guessing that the other hero was TMS and that the film bombed at the box-office! (it had wonderful songs by MSV, though!)
Apparently ALR didn't believe in being twice shy, he again produced Kannil Theriyum Kathaigal-1980,(thankfully, he didn't act in it) and lost all his (remaining) money. (Again, with 5 Mds, the film had some great songs, though)

Now, that would have been appropriate. :)
But I haven't heard that song.
Kannil Theiryum Kathaigal!
What glorious songs, with each MD fighting to deliver the best.
Naan unnai nenechen nee enna neneche
Naan oru ponnoviyam kanden ethire
Naan paarththa rathi thevi enge (by ALR himself)
I can;t recall the other two non-Naan songs.
MD were IR, ShankarGanesh, TR Paappa and ??

Thiru- At least on my part, there was no deliberate intention to keep away yesterday- 'Chandiranai thottadhu yaar' is indeed an enjoyable song. I had no additional info to share on the song-avvalavuthaan. Btw, I thought Sujatha sounded extra-sweet in it. (A big gang of us saw the film in Nov 1997 in Devi theatre, and it definitely wasn't worth ARR's score. Praveen Gandhi made a mess again in Jodi-1999. (He acted in a small role too!) At least he didn't trouble ARR much this time- he used ARR's tunes for Doli Sajaake Rakhna, except for a couple of original songs)

Lollu Party, The 5 Mds and their songs were:
1.KVM: Vettaikkaaran malaiyiley-TMS
2.TR Papa: Onnu rendu moonu -BSS,SPS(?)
3.GKV: Naan paartha Rathi devi-ALR
4.S-G: Naan unnai ninachen-SPB-Jikki-VJ
5.IR: Naan oru ponnoviyam-SPB-SJ-PS

ALR s voice suited Nagesh very much
Enna illai enakku
Chappathi chappathi than
But ALR tried to imitate Mukesh a lot in "Engirundhalum Vaazhga".
Has TS Muralidharan managed another movie after Sri?I remeber one earlier thread which said that this man is going to give ARR a run for money!
Saravanan
Earlier DD s staple song was "Aprel(not April!) fulu banaya" by Rafi in a Biswajeet movie.DD channai s choice was "Naan oru muttaLunga".
bb
I second Saravanan s opinion..that was indeed an ordinary song with an awful picturisation in 1980s style.
Thiru
I think the reason for ARR songs not being discussed is due to regular listening ( Naraayana! Naraayana!)of them thru TV/Radio channels and also people are aware of the critical points of the songs thru many current reviews in mags, net etc.
For eg Swapnil Mistry s "Udaya" review was so comprehensive all you can add is "Yeah!Mr.Swapnil you are right!".

Thiru, just my 2c on the ARR thingy...In this thread, mostly we've been focussing on great lyrics or great rendering by the singer(s). Not much focus was there on the MD(Ever noticed we mostly find unheard gems of UNKNOWN MDs - or rather MDs who didnt get their due - put up here?). And since during ARR's time, lyrics and singers' pronunciation were on the downswing, we dont spend much time discussing the song.(Certainly not many would go over the moon when words like 'Armstrong' are used).

thanks bb for the lyrics...I do agree with most of you... ARR songs (more like any other young MD's songs) have been composed only in the past 10 years, more commonly heard and there is literally few info to share..Further the lyrical essence has gone down a lot...
Have I missed something about 'Alaigal' and 'Metti Oli' discussion?? Any of these title songs posted in SOTD recently??

Lollu,
Pointing the finger and personalizing the issue with name calling is certainly not going to help here, please. I got to know mythila in another thread where we argued vigorously. I have all the respect for mythila. She hasn't to my knowledge written an inappropriate post to date. She has a wealth of knowledge and doesn't hide that she's a IR fan, there's nothing wrong in that. She has also gone on record appreciating songs by other MDs which is antithetic to any Hard Core Fan of one MD. This forum would be a sheer delight if every Hard Core Fan behaved like mythila. We all know that's sadly not the case.
Thiru,
I'm so glad our discussion didn't flare up to another situation here. Thanks for taking my words as words with no strings attached. I hope this post puts an end to all the digressions.

SPB has probably made a conscious decision lately to dole out his grandeur in small portions like precious spirits. This is the only way TFM chose to use Sirghazhi for most of his career since his extraordinary voice didn't suit any living actor. The tiny gem from "Sree" and "Paadavaa" from "Vettri" make me wonder if SPB will only sing such asariri, omnition style songs from here on.
- From: bb (@ 206.154.118.2)
on: Wed Apr 2 13:09:42 EST 2003
The reason probably is that SPB was so overused and overexposed earlier, that using him can make the hero look old or make the music look dated.
