The one thing that comes to mind when I hear this song is the tent(kottai) theatres in villages and towns..At the time of issuing the tickets, they used to play this song in loud speakers..

Brings me memories of our trips to Marudamalai just before each semester results are out to cajole the Lord Murugaiyah to excuse our past escapades to movies, vetti arattais and grant us PASS!!!
Has MaduraiSomu sung any other film song?
Deivam had some good devotional songs from KV like 'Thiruchenduril Kadalorathil', 'Varuvaandi tharuvaandi malaiyandi'

Mythila, how about the trips on krithikais, especially aadi krithukai.
The trips during sani payarchi or guru payarchi.
That reminds me the 1C which goes upto vadavalli.
Mythilla, were you from CIT ? Just curious coz you have done the same thing my batch guys used to do at marudamalai, pray for a pass. And if the results are good, a thanksgiving prayer there and then straight to Central or KG.

bb-What a song! Thanks!
This song is one you’ll most probably hear in the tea shops of Southern Tamilnadu early in the morning even today. When I had gone to Sivakasi for an audit- I would wake up to it everyday – all songs of Deivam, Thunaivan and Thiruvarul would herald the dawn, then back to normal business with the likes of ‘Chinna raasave sitherumbu ennai’, ‘Kaadhoram lolaakku’ and ‘Laalaaku dol dabbimaa’!
Devar’s Deivam-1972 was a grand socio-mythological with Kunnakkudi Vaidhyanathan and Kannadasan doing full justice to the theme. (Incidentally Maruthakaasi walked off with the TN Govt’s Award for the best Lyricist for his ‘Maruthamalayaane naangal vanangum perumaane’ –Thunaivan-1969, also a Devar film)
KV made everyone sit up with his choice of singers in the film- some of them had never sung in films before- ‘Naadariyum Nooru Malai’-Piththukkuli Murugadas,
‘Kundrathile kumaranukku kondaattam’ –Bangalore AR Ramani Ammal, Thiruchendoorin kadalorathil-TMS, Seergazhi Govindarajan, ‘Thiruchenduril Por Purindhu’- Radha & Jayalakshmi (perhaps the only song that Radha of the R-J duo sang in films), Varuvaandi Tharuvaandi Malaiyaandi-Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi & MR Vijaya- and if I remember right all of them appear in the film as well singing their respective songs. (I am sure of TMS-Seergazhi, R-J, and SR-MRV appearing on-screen)
I have read that the Ragam of this song is Darbari Kanada . ( I have also read that fools rush in where angels fear to tread- so--: )
I don’t think Madurai Somu sang any other film song- but he ensured that the one song he did sing would be cherished forever! ( Maharajapuram Santhanam, who is supposed to have sung a short song in Roshakkaari-1974, and the famed Bombay Sisters-C Saroja and C Lalitha who sang ‘Aadi aadi asaindhaal’ in Yaar Jambulingam-1972 couldn’t achieve the same success)
bb- an ideal song for tomorrow would be a ‘certain’ song from Panithirai-1961, sung by AL Raghavan, SV Ponnuswami, PS and LRE. Lyrics by Kothamangalam Subbu and music by KVM.
Catch my point?!

reg 'marudhamalai maamaniye', it hasnt been mentioned that the raagam used is darbaari kaanada. but the song, and the story behind it is, to say the least, amazing.

Saravanan
Santhanam sang for SV Subbiah in that movie. The movie starts with that song after the titles. It is Bhakthi padal -MD was MSV.
Who was he MD for "Yaar Jambulingam"?
On KV -Deivam is one "Golden" album with all great songs.KV repeated his "Golden" act with "Raga Bandangal" but the movie failed.
Talking of TMS s intelligence and modulation, watch him sing for "Paravasa Kunju" AVM Rajan in Tiruvarul and Thunaivan.Particularly the lines like "Ezhamyil irundhalum idhayam undu ayya" in tiruvarul.
Sivakasi-Audit?No doubt! You have set the "STANDARD" for "FIREWORKS" in newtfmpage.
bb,Thanks for "Ramani" lead.

Friends,
In 'Deivam', Devar had taken a mild liberty with Lord Muruga! (Pardonable! After all, he was His ardent devotee!). 'Deivam' was supposed to contain one episode each happening at each of the 'aaRu padai veedugaL'. Because he had a soft corner for Marudhamalai (not one of the 'aaRu padai veedugaL'), he included it in place of 'palamuthir chOlai'!
After a few years, he made a film 'ThiruvaruL', based loosely on the origins of the 'Marudhamalai temple', where 'paambaatti siththar' is shown as locating the original idol from inside the jungle, under a 'marudha maram'!

OISG :)- thanks for the details of Santhanam's song in Roshakkari. Is it a paasuram? I have heard about it, though never heard it :( (Of course Roshakkaari immediately brings to mind the enthralling 'Mullai malargalil aaraathanai'-PS)
Yaar Jambulingam had music by TR Papa

Saravanan, I got your hint, but I don't have that song.
Song of the Day: chandhiranai thottadhu yaar from ratchagan.

- A great song by ARR, in this awful movie *ing Nagarjuna and Sushmitha Sen. Sung by Hariharan and Sujatha. Lyrics by Vairamuthu. The film had some good songs, and it was unfortunate that ARR probably took more days to compose the songs than the days that the film ran at the cinemas.
- Udhaya cites this song to illustrate VM's vaarththai prayOgam:
In this song VM shows the difference in the awareness of lovers brought on by love:
pookkalai sedi kodiyin porul
endru ninathirundhaen
poovai unnaip parthapinnae
pookkalin mozhi arindhaen
thalaiyanai enbathu
thalaikkendru ninaithirundhaen
thalaivanai pirindhapinnae
thaliyanai thunai arindhaen
in this following stanza he shows the transformation of the lovers' personality since they found love
theeppantham pondravan naan
theebamaai aagivittaen
puyalukku pirandhaval naan
thendral endru aagivittaen
karungallaip poandravan naan
karpooram aagivittaen
thaamarai malar kondu
udal seitha oaviyamae
ennudal baaram mattum
eppadi thaangukiraai?

Just curious... I'm not starting a ARR-IR fight here...
I find no one really discussing about ARR songs when it is posted in SOTD.. I havent been following SOTD since day one but atleast for the last 6 months I have seen this trend... Any of the following reasons?
1)Are people in this forum not really interested in discussing ARR songs
or
2) There is nothing valauble to discuss about these songs?
or
3) Are forumers not knowledgable to discuss these songs?
or
4) Are people staying away from praising/criticising ARR songs as being some other MD's fans?
or
5) Forumers havent heard these songs to comment on these...

bb,
I am one of the many passive viewers of this forum and this thread. I have several requests for SOTD. For now two songs from the top of my head:
1) Mannil Vandha Nilave - Nilave Malare. PS voice in this song is mesmerising. Nice guitar work and a very melodious tune. I dont know who the MD of this song is. I get to hear this song time to time in thenisai.com
2) Vizhiyile Manivizhiyil - Nooravadhu Naal. Yet another melodious duet by SPB & SJ. Been looking for this song for a very long time.
I wish I could get MP3 versions of these songs.

Yeah..Same here...I am also not impressed with this song....Just, YET another song... The costumes for this song, I could recollect to be funny! ;-)
Infact, I always feel that "Nenjee Nenjee ..." by KJY and Sadha Sargam is better than song...

Thiru,
Your post is very myopic regarding this thread. SOTD began as a way for bb to highlight certain songs. I lobbied to make it a thread for overlooked or uncommon songs. Over time this venue became a permanent place for listeners with a taste for the obscure and esoteric. So, in light of all that, ARR and IR are overly mainstream and exhaustively covered elsewhere for this thread to bother about them. But that's not to say they don't get discussed here or are underrepresented here by any means. Just recently "Udhaya" was SOTD with RajaG's write up.
Anyway, I bothered to respond because this is one thread that's relatively sanitary so far. Please, don't bring secularism and fan clubs here too.
