I think Udit and Unnikrishnan are great singers! We should let people sing from the North if they have a great vøice and could pronounce tamil fairly. We need singers who can sing with emotion and feeling. Why can't we have singer from the North, when they're actors/actresses that come from there.

i cite the same reasons ramya has given to prove my point. ww need singers who can sing emotionally, so that excludes people like hariharan. also we already have enough actresses like simran from north who know nothing except to bare themselves.so do we need northie singers also?

shankar,
who said ARR or suresh peters pronounces words correctly? its just that since udit gets to sing a lot more these days that people have commented about him.that does not mean in any way that the other northie guys sing well.

In the song "Kaasumela" when Udit tries to sing "note-aththaan" it sounds like a swear word. This is the kind of atrocity that occurs when pronunciation is not done carefully.
Madhiazhaganae, unakku TFM is not worthy of discussion endraal, un arumayaana Thamizh peyarai maatrikkol maganae. This is a TFM discussion forum, so please refrain from attacks and if you have nothing to discuss then please refrain all together. To throw a fit when others differ from your opinion is childish.

"MADHIAZHAGAN" endra azhagaana peyarai vaithukkondu 'tamil music is not worthy of discussion' endru solla eppadi manasu vandhadhu. My dear friend! for every one person who will say that Udit's voice is sweeter than S.P.B's there will be thousands who will vouch for the contrary. This is a fact. Now coming to the point.
Music is like a diamond. It is multifaceted.
I am a true Indian. Any day I will help a countryman in need irrespective of his language, religion, etc, etc, ....
I will try to develop tolerance, compassion , love etc, etc,.. for my people let them be from south, north, east, or west.
But I will shut my ears when I hear music with its beauty blotched by MISPRONOUNCIATION, even if it is sung by a "MARATHAMIZHAN".
That is the most natural reaction in this world.
Issues like "tolerance for singers from north" or "make use of talent from native land" etc, are irrelevant. This applies to everybody in the world.
The way Udit sings, it cannot even be categorised as an 'accent'. It IS gross mispronounciation and it takes the life out of the song. And I will also never contest the fact that his voice is one of the sweetest I ever heard. For the kind information of those who might dub me as a "TAMIL CHAVUNIST" {whatever that might mean), I wish to tell you that my mother tongue is telugu and I speak the same at home.

Question
Why are singers from the North (or West, rather) made to sing tamil
songs?
Answer
Because we listen to it!

Who says Udit sings Hindi songs with perfection? He is plain lucky to be in Bollywood when the real stars are all dead and gone and the real good ones unlucky.

Mr Mathiazhagan,
Were you joking or are you angry with owner of E-mail Id you have given? If the answer is no to both the questions, then kindly open up your ears (and mind), such baseless thoughts will not haunt you anymore (kindly do this as a favor for other TFMers).

"Ithu Vandharai vaazha vaikkum Tamilnadu", and so too is our rich cultural heritage. We welcome and feed everybody even forgetting our own kith and kin. That is tamil culture. We allow everybody to survive in Tamilnadu devoid of culture, race and religion. We make them successful too. Be it North (Udit, Singh, Hari, Shakar as singers, Manoj Kyan etc as MD) or other states like Andhra (SPB,Susheela, Janaki,Mano, etc), Kerala (KJJ, Chitra, Jayachandran, minmini, sunanda etc) anybody with talent and skill are welcome in Tamilnadu. You also see a variety of names in all leading businesses including pawn broking. It is only Tamilnadu which does this and ALSO EARNS A NAME AS TAMIL FANATIC!
Please remember what happened to Vani Jayaram during entry in Bollywood. How many song have the other state greats like SPB and KJJ done when compared to their DOMINATION with the innocent tamils? Think it this way,How many songs have the Tamil native singers like Sirkazhi Govindarajan, TMS, Loganathan, Chidambaram Jayaraman sung in Bollywood or at the least Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films?
It is with a great magnanimity that tamils allow EVERYONE to survive and succeed without being fanatics (Imagine poor tamils in Maharashtra and Karnataka are being beaten up), and allow Other state singers to enjoy 5star comforts and flight fares and stars simrans and nagmas etc., to invest on bungalows in Tamilnadu. There is no Tamil Unarvu today. But all others(Bollywood, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada film makers) talk a lot about equality and are being SILENT FANATICS !
Tamils are not fanatics at any time. Their Tamil Vazhga voices are only signs to get over their insecurity. WILL TAMIL FANTICS ALLOW SUCH A STATE OF PRESENT DAY SONGS?

Why are singers from the North (or West, rather) made to sing tamil songs?
1) Because Tamilians don't respect fellow Tamilians :-)
2) Vandhaarai Vaazhavaikkum Thamizhagam (Irukkiravanai kandu kollaathu!).
3) Ikkaraikku Akkarai Pachchai
Nithin,
Agree with your points. I don't know about other states. But in AP, people have great respect for IR and he scored music for lots of telugu films. (I was there for 10 years!). TN produced good MD's and other states produced good singers (?!)

IR had telugu hits from the original tamil tracks used in most of the cases. Apart from IRs talents, one should not forget the business strategy of IR in flooding tamil song oppurtunities to SPB and Jesudas as give and take for telugu native (SPB who was commercially successful) and malayalam native(by using KJJ). It was a mutual business exchange by the majority work enjoyers of that time. It is all in the 'business'. Most of the Tamil films were financed by telugu and keralites who lived in Madras at that time.
Why didnt IR use Tamil voices 'atleast' in telugu or malayalam films? I heard ARR using Sirkali for telugu version of Odakkara in Priyanka (Indra in Tamil).
In early 60s Ghantasala was killing tamil in tamil films and now after a polite era of Thrukkoyile odi vaa and kiliye kiliye etc..Sukvinder and Udit have changed the polite killing to same old massacre killing of 60s in 2000.
One should not forget that after that came a revolutionary change with TMS, Sirkali, Loganthan, CS Jayaraman etc., and a similar change for good will definitely happen in the near future as people have already started questioning?

don't be loud. they come with examples of rahman, sridevi, hemamalini, mani iyer, etc, etc. etc. how did you happen to forget the big import of telegu and mallu heroines. Even top hero spot in TFindustry is being occupied by non-tamils. Well. if we start looking that way then people call us as lingual-racists or fantics. occasionally, i had some hot arguments with my fellow north indians about all these.
Interenstingly, tamils who achieve little fame in north (or abroad) don't claim themselves to be tamils...
STS
your 1st point is 70% true
your second point is 98% true
your 3rd point is 100% true
I am sorry for not restricting just to music.

Singers from North. Why?
Production managers and MDs and Studios are benefitted.(? read between the lines).
We are used to listen to anything cinema media gives, good or bad, we witness with patience, which is mistook as appreciation!
TFM is prepared to bear 40000Rs per song after a long wait, excluding flight charges, star hotel charges, extra theatre charges for the time taken for their smoking pleasures inbetween before mixing the next line of the song etc. This is with north voices.
TFM with other neighbouring states was prepared to bear up to 20000Rs per song with atleast a wait of atleast 6 song tracks to be mixed by a single voice, as if there were no other singer in TN.
Iam pertaining to music alone and leave alone the superstars and actresses we make from other states, as though we are deficient in our people. This happens every where, as Fliflo posts - AR Rahman, Hemamalini etc are only chosen few, when compared to the increased percentage happening here.
60-70s saw Malayalee based MSV and KVMahadevan using tamil voices. 70-80s saw Keralites and telugu speaking singers, though fluent in spoken tamil for the sake of marketing, had the song script written in their mother tongue. This continued in 80-90s when lyricists were fed up dictating the song tiredly after their hardwork.
Remember, this was the period when Tamils were happy that they had a musical talent from Tamilnadu village in the form of Ilayaraja. This trend setter unfortunately sent tamil voices to the gutter and one almost felt that Malayala MSV and KV Mahadevan were far better in giving oppurtunities to tamil voices.
And now we have a stage in 2000-01, when Vairamuthu has to stay back in Devas recording of Udit Narayan, singing 'Eswara', to correct a major mistake of pronouncing "Periyamma pennai sight adikkalaam - Thappilley!" instead of "Piriyamana Pennai sight Adikkalaam". This is the fate of Tamil songs or films. IAM SURE AR RAHMAN, HEMAMALINI, MANIIYER etc. would not commit such blunders in other languages. Our people from TN have the courtesy to learn, read and write other languages and sing from the original script given. Not with dictation and transcription done by the other parasitic lots!

KVM is a tamilian for FYI MR veerabagu(from palghat but still tamilian unless other you consider them 'iyers' as nontamilian).
Most of the so called tamil lovers cant even pronounce word Tamizh properly they call it tamil why comment on others !! their love of tamil is none to others.
So many immortal songs are given by MSV and KVM
Enna Visham unga sorkalil 'Malayala MSV' going by your fanatic arguments i seriously doubt these will go thro ur thick head
Talent and music has no boundaries please remember that. Grow up
I feel proud about being a tamilian who has broad mind and heart to welcome everyone.
Please musickku oru kurukiya vattam podathinga
But I do agree with you in one point some of them singer should take care to prounounce words properly this entirely in the hands of MD
