Hi friends ,
Of late i feel that though ILLAYARAJA is the best MD in terms of BGM ,can he give a hit now ..?Noiw pleas e do not say that bharti ,Azhagi ,Kaasi are hits ..I liked them but they are not great ..The cassete sales are good .Agreed.ILLAYARAJA desperatly fails in western beats (now ..),which is evident in DEVAN .Can he give hit like Punngai Mannan ,Veera,Thalapthi ..For the past four years ILLAS has kept quiet .I don't expect him to deliver music like Ar Rehman ,but can he deliver the music which he delivered 10 years ago ...?Something very different ,Melodious .
Even his latest ventures IVAAN ,Enn MANA VAAANIL are not great .IVAAN is good ,but when compare dto SINDU Bhairavi ...sorry ..ENN MANA VAANIL is just average ...say a simlar movie like KIzhagu Vasal had great songs ...!
what do u say ..?
IF i remember his last "GREAT" hit was KAdaluku MArriyadhai .....What do u say friends ..?

"IR was NEVER good and only thrived in a vaccuum in the 80s. Once REAL talent came in early 90s, he could not stand the heat and was swept away by the storm."

i am a harcore ARR fan but i am a fan of good music.
Ilayaraaja is a genius. He is still producing hits although not as gr8 as 80's.But his songs are melodious,eg Kasi and his BGM is simply superb.
I heard he got national award for Azhagi BGM.Is it true?

Nijam,
In my opinion, I think it's not right to say that Raja was in a vaccum. He is the Mozart of this generation. Pls. listen to the BGMs of Azhagi. They sound great, especially the "Ulagam yaar sondhamo" song. The Western orchestration and arrangements are extraordinary, though they are folk based with a mix of mild flavour of Charukesi ragam. The End credits are great too, with superb string sections. He may not be in his peak now, but his music are soul embodied. I happen to watch Kannathil muthamittal yesterday. I am Sorry to say that I found that the BGMs are not really that touching, atleast when compared to his initial movies like Roja.

I still believe that IR can give another sindu bhairavi, mouna raagam, muthal mariyathai IF and ONLY IF manirathman, balachandar and bharathi raja get back THEIR OWN form and work again with IR.
people must understand one thing.... it is not just IR who lost his touch... so are these famous directors.. These directors are struggling hard to give just one hit for so many years..
Time is everything... but imo, all that IR needs is a good director who can extract the best out of him...

top.Just wait and watch.

I agree with X. Those movies demanded great music. He offered them. Only A center movies and Rajini movies are used as a platform to judge the MDs in this forum. Usually A center movies are directed by Maniratnam, Balachander, Fazil, Bharathi Raja, Shankar. Except Fazil nobody else is working with IR. If you look at Fazil's movies, songs in all his movies are hit. It also matter who directs the movie. Only the combination strikes all the movies will become a hit. Shankar-ARR combo is somewhat successful barring Jeans. Kadhalan, Gentleman, Mudalvan, Indian. The grandness with which Shankar makes his movies allow more chance to ARR to experiment. Shankar always makes sure the movie does well by having comedy part, music, plot in the right proportion. Even though he has not shown any skills in making character driven movies like Mouna Raagam, Anjali, Porkalam or Relationship driven movies like Kadhalukku Mariyathai, Varusham 16... he makes sure his movie is not a total failure. Directors have to be smart. If a combination clicks they should stick to it. Fazil and Balu Mahendra are smart. Maniratnam gave two successful movies with ARR Bombay and Roja. Rest of the movies did very ordinarily. After BR left IR, not a single movie was a hit. It was not part of BR's wisdom to leave IR because of VM. BR made one of the biggest blunder in his career by leaving IR. Balachander's movies calls for strong BGM as most of his movies are character driven. None of his movies in 90s ran like Puthu Puthu Arthangal, Unnal Mudiyum Thambi, Sindhu Bhairavi and Punnagai Mannan. Another blunder from Another great director. Karagattakaran is one prime example what a decent music can do. Ramarajan, debutant Kanaga, weak villain Santhana Bharathi, Koundamani, Senthil, Kovai Sarala. When the movie was made, not even in the wildest dreams they would have expected this riproaring success. Same goes to Chinna Kounder. It was a great hit. Every director should have to two choices of MDs. Maniratnam, BR, BC all had golden time with IR. Now they are having terrible time with ARR as he is not able to come out with decent BGM. IMHO a musician always improves. Music is not like Table tennis, carrom board where you will lose touch if you don't play for sometime. It is in heart. Nobody can take that away from any composer. Be it is ARR or IR. The difference between them is ARR is more commercial, IR is more professional.

Unmai, don't you realise you are the most idiotic, stupid moron to ever visit this forum?
And you have the cheek to insult other people.
You are a pain.
You are a pest.
You are an idiot.
Now that all the above has been ascertained, get lost.

What a stupid question? IR is till giving hits. He is still in the hot-market. Not like others. ARR shaked his position. Even after the shaking, still IR is doing well. In recent years, majority of the tamil hits are from IR. Where is ARR? He is an history now.

Sorry, I forgot to give the link. http://www.vikatan.com. Its in the section "Konal Pakkangal" by writer "CHARU NIVEDHITHA"
I feel he is right. Even though Iam a hardcore fan of IR, I still agree what he says. Anybody has his or her own right to decide/speak about his/her likes and dislikes. Eg:I dont like IR's music. I dont like Rajinikanth's acting. I dont like SPB's voice etc..

Unmai
I do definitely agree with your point(s). Yes Charu is not a musical genius like Yesudas or Subbudu, but his article has appeared in "Vikatan" which is a very popular magazine. I'd like to bring to your notice my earlier posting on this thread "to put a full stop" to this thread. I now again request all the TFM page surfers to put a full stop. I have also send a mail to the webmaster of TFM to take this thread out of TFM page. Anyhow IR is the greatest and there is no doubt about it.
>>>
Those two statements above were made by the same person with different user ID's [(ash (@ 12.5.196.254) & ash (@ 66.25.52.229)]. The second idiot things that Unmai knows better than Yesudas & Subbudu and urging to put a full stop to this thread. I think Unmai is disguised as ash & trying to close this thread by calling himself as genius. This fu[king mental idiot Unmai is desperately trying to prove that IR's craps are the best in the world. Just see what others think of him
<<
To all the guys who are trying to reason with Unmai. Unmai doesn't speak. He spits venom.
Beyond all his paragraphs and paragraphs of writing, we can only see a frustrated IR fan clutching at straws. Let us be magnamious. Let him rattle on and on.
Do you note something interesting: Uthaman --> JJ --> Unmai. When one disappears, the other appears and the one gone, never returns! >>>
So I will urge the admin to delete all postings made by this pathetic pannadai Unmai under different names. Please stay away from this mental disorder person !!!

I guess it is high time that TFM admin insist that people should have a login to discuss in the forums. The login process itself could be free and probably there should be some way of restricting one login for one person. (This would be really difficult if he is posting from behind the firewall but there should be some way). Of late there are so many junks posted here.
Admin, will you seriously consider this?.

Ya jeera ..theer are lot of people who access behind a firewall..for me ther is no problem as iam the only tamilian who aceess newtfmpage.com from my office ..but for others it will be a problem ...
It is very diffcult too to monitor these things ....
A suggestion for ADMIN ....Not for the above problem ..In general u can put some advertistments in every discussion chat forum ....I hope thsi brings in some revenue ...

FIRSTLY LET ME SAY THIS .. IR HAS HAD HITS AFTER KM :REMEMBER A FILM NEED NOT BE A HIT FOR THE MUSIC TO BE A HIT!!!!!
Here is a list of his recent musical successes :
1997 - Raman Abdullah , GURU - ( Malayalam - National Award Winner ) , Devadai
1998 - Kadhal Kavithai ,
1999 - Friends , Anthapuram ( Telugu ) - National Award Winner
2000 - Bharathi , Kannukul Nilavu , Kochu Kochu Santoshangal ( Malayalam ), Hey Ram
2001 - Azhagi , Kasi
The list continues ...
I agree with Unmai ... Ilayaraaja has continued to give great music but the films just havent lived up to his music ..
It is a wonder that directors prefer to work with Devaa , Vidyasagar and other for crappy music rather than IR. Other than Mani Ratnam and Shankar no one consistently gets good music from ARR ..
The very quality of Tamil Music has gone down in the recent times . If a music connoiseur lists the 50 best songs for the past 5 years , we would find that Raaja's songs alongwith ARR would form a bulk of that .
All I can say is that I hope some of the good directors will start working with IR so that we can get to see good movies with good music.
For those of you who follow movies and music , this phase in Tamil Cinema is simlar to the 80s in Hindi cinema where RD BURMAN was sidelined in favor of Bappi Lahiri , Laxi Pyare etc who produced crappy music for most films .. RD BURMAN was still leagues ahead of all the other MDs of that time .. What we remember today is that Hindi Movie Music went through a bad phase in the 80s ... People are going to remember the same about the late 90s

Hello phantom ..
I do not agree when u try to compare music of bappi lahri and AR Rehman ..Definetly AR Rehman is great whenit comes to songs ..Definetly it is a refined music ..But where rehman failed was in the area of BGM ...RAAJA is still the raja of BGM
U have pointed out the hits of ILLAYARAJA ..But out of how many films ...say if 10 films release for illas only 2 of them become a hit .....(after 1993) ...
Can i buy ILLAS cassete for sure without hearing it before ..?I do not think so ...I can show a lot of examples in which ILLAS has given absolute crap ..take for instance DEVAN..?How will u rate the songs sexy bomb and teen age la ..?I feel ILLAS lost the consistency in music ....Even Enn Mana Vaanil is just average ..It may be good ..But is it good enough to make mark ...?
