Hi friends ,
Of late i feel that though ILLAYARAJA is the best MD in terms of BGM ,can he give a hit now ..?Noiw pleas e do not say that bharti ,Azhagi ,Kaasi are hits ..I liked them but they are not great ..The cassete sales are good .Agreed.ILLAYARAJA desperatly fails in western beats (now ..),which is evident in DEVAN .Can he give hit like Punngai Mannan ,Veera,Thalapthi ..For the past four years ILLAS has kept quiet .I don't expect him to deliver music like Ar Rehman ,but can he deliver the music which he delivered 10 years ago ...?Something very different ,Melodious .
Even his latest ventures IVAAN ,Enn MANA VAAANIL are not great .IVAAN is good ,but when compare dto SINDU Bhairavi ...sorry ..ENN MANA VAANIL is just average ...say a simlar movie like KIzhagu Vasal had great songs ...!
what do u say ..?
IF i remember his last "GREAT" hit was KAdaluku MArriyadhai .....What do u say friends ..?

i feel Illayaraja is coming back strongly. Ivann and kathal saathi are two good soundtracks which has more than a couple of songs in the TRUE maestro style. I think he's du out for a real big one.

What is the real professional life span of a genius composer - until his last breath. MSV is doing ghazals now, a career started in 19 - 50 years. IN his third decade he came up with Andha 7 Natkal, several Rajini hits and who can forget Ninaithaile Innikkum in 1978 that is 26 years after he produced what I cansider the Sound of Music of Indian films. Salil Chodhry till his last day in 1996 from 1942 - he did a few mal films and tv serials in the 90s. great tunes still. Take foriegn composers like Mancini, Morricone, Barry all composed into their 4th decade of their career and they only got better and better.
IR has got another 25 years to go and you can bet that he is only served oorkai and appalum. First, I think his goal is to just make music, films a 20 a years, he will reach the 1000 mark by age 70. Now, the genius will come only in bits, because obviously he needs the challenge and people who know music to aks him to do it. I am yet to see a knowledgeble director /producer on the scene who can inspire IR to come up with aanother Sound of Music universal melodiexs. But, does that mean IR won't do it, it is a question of getting back into the grove. Now that the ARR phenomenon has fizzled, I expect IR and KR to hit the scene and gain that momentum out of that inertia after KMariyadhayai. Give a great cast, a great story, great money and anything else to motivated IR, you bet IR will give another Ninaithale Innikkum or Ilamai Oonjaladigirudhu.
IR's greatest asset is the critical mass and keeping the momentum going since 1996, even though the songs were not much, he kept it coming. All geniuses know what it takes to sustain their genius. Who knows even Rahman might mature if he is given the chance. Luckily for him, he has got undescribable public support, which is the most essential factor for a genius, otherwise they go the way of Mozart in debts

Guys,
Raja will remain the Raja he is.
THe fact he is still producing music and the fact that he has strong fan support is proof enough.
We do not need to dissect his performance or his career chart.Just sit back ,relax and enjoy his isai for within those tunes lies the raja we all know and love.

I think IR can easily come up with a hit provided he uses established/senior artists like SPB, KJY, KSC, Sujatha and stick to his own style. But unfortunately, he seems to prefer SS, HH & SMD nowadays with western style beats - I really can't see him comeup with Mega hits like Idhaya Koyil or Uthaya Geetham with these jokers. These guys simply can't express the emotions/feelings that IR music is known for.

As archivist stated earlier, there should be a gutsy director/producer to throw a challenge to the music director and come up with a muscical movie. KB did it with Ninaithaale Inikkum and Sindhu Bairavi. BharathiRajaa gave more importance to music in his movies but never made a muscical. Kamalahasan gave challenges and got some masterpiece music pieces from IR in movies like RaajaPaarvai, Guna, HeyRam, but no muscical. Same with maniratnam too. these are all the bignames who can take the movies and music beyond tamilnadu. but sadly no effort seen from anyone to make a real muscical. if we think that if a music director is rich and produces movies, he will make a muscical - wrong, even IR did not go for it. Alaigal Oyvathillai comes close, but teenage love story dominated the movie and it was a branded BR movie. Its been a long long time since tfm had a good muscical movie with about 10 to 12 songs. It was announced recently that IR is going to produce a movie with Vinayan as director. It will be again a love story movie with a few catchy tunes in it. A muscical - with only music as the main subject - TFM will have to wait for a gutsy person. and thats the album to wait!

So many intresting responses .Now a question is Should a music director produce good songs only if the story and theme is good ..?

Unmai,
"If IVAN is not great what is great tell me!!! All you have to judge is whether the songs fit the movie or not!"
Did u ever bother to check if BABA songs fitted with the movie?
If u are judging any music, apply the same rule to all MD's.

It may be that in Unmai's judgement, IR has had longstanding history of composing songs that fit a movie and hence in his judgement that rule may not apply to other MD's, especially those who have not exhibited such a trait in the past.

IR has had a longstanding history of composing songs irresepective of how good the story or movie is...examples "Enakkul Oruvan" - can't sit through the movie but the songs are brilliant, Nilave Mugam kattu, Ilaya Raagam, Kolangal, Karisakattu Poove, Poonthottam etc. are recent examples where there are great songs irrespective of the fact the movies have been abysmal.

K,
Well in that case, one should not compare IR with the other MD's...
How many songs of ARR did u find, not fitting with the movie? In that case its the problem of the director not ARR.. Songs in shankar and MR movies fit well with the scene..One bad example is
Alli Arjuna, but that was the mistake of Saran..

I never compare IR with ARR because in my opinion ARR's music has never ever scaled up to the brilliance of IR's music. I have always considered the stuff about about ARR's music is more hype than content.
I was responding to the comment that Unmai should apply the same rule to all MDs - which need not be necessarily true based on one's perception of different MDs. While you may consider ARR's music fit with the movies and may apply that rule in judging different MD's, Unmai's perception may be that the rule appiles to only certain MD's based on the traits exhibited in the past.
Knowing that tastes and preferences are individualistic and very subjective when it comes to music, it just appeared ludicrous advising others what rules to apply. Stating your prefernces and opinion that ARR's music fitss with a movie would have been OK.

K it is the responsibility of music director to compose songs and BGM that fit the movie. I always get a feeling his BGMs and songs do not fit the movie except his earlier works. Whatever that is expressed here by anybody is just an opinion!! Not rulez!! It just appears ridiculous concluding others opinions as advise!!

K,
I completely agree with ur argument....I am more of an IR fan than other MD's....But I dont agree that other MD's produce thrash..With respect to the title of the thread, does IR gives good hit now?
Me and my room mate had to buy one cassette each..I brought "Friends" and he brought "Minnale". To my opinion "minnale" was far better album than "friends"..If you are an HCIRF u can dismiss this statement by saying the "minnale" was a one time wonder..but that doesnt hide the fact the "friends" was an average album...I definetely feel that IR is giving less hit than he used to give before..
These are my personal opinion and i am not trying to impose this on others.

Good.
Now will you accept my opinion that IR was NEVER good and only thrived in a vaccuum in the 80s. Once REAL talent came in early 90s, he could not stand the heat and was swept away by the storm.
Today, he is so insignificant that he can't even stand up against minnows like Adityan and Sirpy.
Is there going to be double standards applied to my opinion?

It is your opinion and I do not agree with that opinion. Neither does your opinion bother me nor does it diminish IR. It just shows what you expect when you hear music is entirely different from what I expect. I don't get turned on by ARR's music. I get captivated by IR's music.
The issue in this forum seems to be when you and I totally contrasting opinions like this, instead of just appreciating the fact that our tastes are dissimilar, people start casting aspersions on each other stating that if IR's music of today appeals me - that either I am dishonest or somehow my tastes are inferior to anothers. Even in the previous posting where one has said he prefers Minnale album to Friends, it is just his preference and has absolutely no bearing on mine which is the opposite. No amount of arguing in these forums are going to change that. So why can't people just state their opinions and understand that there may be others who might have totally the opposite opinion. An individuals tastes and prefernces are based on so may different socio, psychodemographic variables. So while one may say that at a given time, a segment with similar preferences is this large, to attribute any superoirity of that segment other than size would be an ignorant exercise.
As to your last point, it is your opinion. I do not ascribe to it but there is absolutely no harm in stating your opinion. It just reflects your preferences in music so people with similar preferences such as yours can share in the glory of the musical expertise of Sirpi, Adiyan etc.

K, thanks for your honest thoughts and more importantly for not bashing me.
I think what is important here is that while we can agree to disagree, we can also point out why each other's statement may not be correct. However, what usually happens here is that tempers get lost and mud-slinging begins.
In that situation both parties end up being adamnt in their views with no benefit being ever earned through this discussion forum.
Btw, in your last statement you read me wrong. I ignore music by this group.
