Naaz, I think I read somewhere that the music of Paalootti vaLartha kiLi was trashed by most critics.

Guys,
Does this movie have any other songs other than "Kola Kolayaa munthirikaa" and this "Naan Peesa Vandheen"...Curious to know!
Thanks

I am sure that those who trashed the song (only this one) when it first came out (of course, PVK was not even half the rage of AK) have had ample time to change their mind.
GCT-Kuil :
That was a random list of songs with a similar "feel." I included Azhagan for that reason, although I was aware that it was a MM composition.
Do you feel the "sensation" I have tried to encapsulate?

This song brings me memories of other soft duets by SPB and SJ of 76/77 'oru naal unnodu orunaal'- film Uravaadum nenjam MD: IR
'Then sindhude vaanam' film PonnukkuThangaManasu MD: GKV

A note about the thread discussing IR's second film.. That was the first ever thread started on TFM-DF after it was launched. I started it and RR and Ramki's are the first two responses. :)). Little did I know I was foreshadowing the IR obsession this Forum was going to exhibit. :))

Song of the Day: naan pEsa vandhEn from paalootti vaLartha kiLi.
Surprisingly this song is not familiar at all to me even though I was in India when IR had started. This one is more original compared to “ orE naaL” which was a judicious imitation of Madan Mohan’s music in “ Wo khon thee?”. When he started, IR used to borrow, very cleverly though, and of course, later developed his own unique style.

ramji, - "When he started, IR used to borrow, very cleverly though, and of course, later developed his own unique style." -is a gross overstatement.
Go through the list of IRs first 10 movies (you need at least 10 to gain confidence and develop your style), each one of them were unique - annakkili, PVK, Uravadum, badhrakaLi, ... each had a song that was so unique, so refreshing for the day and each was a trend setter. Of course, he showed glimpse of other composers - but that was more of an youthful enthu to prove that "I can be him". There is a difference between copy, imitation, borrowing and ... inspiration. Your first task is to benchmark yourself with others who achieved and then you rise the bar. This man had risen the bar to new heights within the first 10 movies.
I see the similar enthusiasm in Yuvan in his new song "nenjodu kalanthitu..." experimenting with scottish pipes. Beatles used to do this with sitar, band music, norwegian national anthem, etc. No one calls it borrowed.

Sorry for tuning in late--
bb-once again, a perfect song to listen to again and again over the weekend (for you all); and to begin the week with (for me), - among my favourite SPB-SJ duets ever!
Arun Prasad Movies’ Paalootti Valartha Kili starred Vijayakumar, Sripriya, Major Sundararajan, Thangavelu, YGM, Manorama & others.
Arun Prasad Movies, which was P Madhavan’s own banner, had earlier produced Ponnukku Thanga Manasu-1973 and Murugan Kaattiya Vazhi-1974, both of which had music by GK Venkatesh. Even earlier, P Madhavan had directed KR Vijaya’s home production Sabadham-1971, which had music by GK Venkatesh. While the songs for these films were being composed and recorded, Ilayaraja, (who was assisting GKV), came to Madhavan’s notice. When he heard the songs that Ilayaraja had created for Annakkili, P Madhavan booked him for Paalootti Valartha Kili, even before Annakkili was released.
In the light of the above, I too am of the opinion that Paalootti Valartha Kili would have been IR’s second film, though Uravaadum Nenjam might have been a close third.
PVK was prosaic in its proceedings, and even IR’s score couldn’t help it. Major S, Thangavelu (brilliant cameo in the role of ‘Allahpichai’, a good Samaritan), and IR’s songs were the silver linings in this darkest cloud.
GCT_Kuil, other than these two songs(Naan pesa vandhen & Kola kolaya mundhirikka), PVK had another song- ‘Vaadiamma ponmagaley, vandha idam nalla idam’ (SPB-PS), a nondescript comedy song, SPB for YGM and PS for Manorama.

Saravanan, is it true that "Then sindhudhe vaanam" was actually composed by IR when he was assisting GKV? I have heard this often.

Vijay- I too have heard this, but I am not very sure about it, as GKV too was a talented composer.
bb- just saw your doubt on VN Sundaram- it is definitely VN Sundaram who sings along with JPC.
After the sun set on his first innings as an actor who sang his songs, VN Sundaram took to play back singing – and sang many memorable songs in the 50s. That he was a brilliant classical singer was already well established, but his amazing versatility in comedy songs became evident in ‘Varuvaai Manamohana’ from Inspector-1953, where as the director who is teaching an actress how to act for a particular song, VNS simply scintillates, along with MLV. His other equally remarkable hilarious numbers were ‘Raathiri boovakke lottery’-Koondukkili-1954 and ‘Kaviyin kanavil vaazhum kaviyamey’-Kalyanam Panniyum Brahmachari-also 1954.
TS Baliah was said to be a great fan of VNS- In fact the first very first song of VNS as a playback singer was for Baliah- that eternal classic- ‘Chinnanjiru Kiliye’ –Manamagal-1951 (MLV for Padmini and VNS for Baliah). In the same film, VNS also sang ‘Naaney un adimayey’ for Baliah. Another unusual song that VNS sang for Baliah was ‘Manamagalaaga varum mangai evalo’-Kumara Raja- 1961, wherein a father-in-law wonders about his future daughter-in –law and sings!
Of course, VNS lost relevance in the changing times--- when a classical song was to be pictured on Baliah in Thiruvilayadal-1965, it was Balamuralikrishna who was chosen for ‘Oru naal podhuma’. And when VNS was called to sing for Baliah again by MSV in 1967 for ‘Varavu ettana selavu pathana’-1967, VNS gracefully declined, and TMS went on to make it a classic.

'kola kolayaa' was Kannadhaasan's first song for IR. He purposely wrote "kaNNaa odOdi vaa... RAAJAA VAA..." to welcome IR into TFM.

I was listening to that old Hemant Kumar song again today and I take back my earlier statement. He seems to have done a good job with pronunciation afterall, may be the context of the song (perhaps this is sung by manam vittuppOna yarO alladhu bOdhayudan pAdi irukkalam) is what makes it kind of unclear but can't complain much about HK's pronunciation, seems to have done a much better job than the current crowd like Udit Narayan.

Naan Pesa Vandhen is heavily inspired (in the first two lines ;--) from a famous Salil song - Naan Ennum Pozhudey in Hindi in 1972 or something. Oru Naal Unnodu Oru Naal is an inspired one?

'Then Sindhude Vaanam', song was composed by the great GKV. Actually this song was remake of kannada song 'Haayaagide Eee Dina' sung by PBS and SJ. Even 'Ponnukku Tanga Manasu' MD is GKV. By that time IR was Assisting GKV.
bb, thanks for the beautiful song. Can you please upload 'Poomaidaiyo Ponveenaiyo' song, MD is VSN. I dont know the movie. And one more song 'Adada Idhudaan Sugamo'song, MD SPB.
Thanks in advance.
regards

i've real player 8 installed...wud appreciate if any of u can tell me how to fix the problem

Shankar, you might need to explicitly download the real player plug-in for Mac and make it the default player.
On the other hand, I've never tried out the plug-in with Mac, so I am not sure if it would work.

this song by SPB and SJ was the fore-runner of many duets in the sense it was their first with ilayaraja which went on until mano and chitra came on to replace them.this song was ahead of its time,it was soft, soothing. there are silent pauses in the song, say after "sol ena kannum..............nil ena nenjum" which makes it even more melodious
