Hi Naveen:
Simply Superb. What are you doing with Software Development? I think you can contribute significantly better than any film musician back in india. Donot think I am flattering guys, it's indeed the truth. I have asked some of my friends ( both americans and indians ) to listen to Naveen's rendering on piano...they felt it's too good. I asked them to listen to the original tamil song, american couldn't make any sense out of it...but the same was appreciated when played in WCM (naveen's )style on piano - it reached their minds easily. I think you can popularize ( globalize ) some of the good MSV and IR's songs in here.
Is it possible to upload all these things onto your homepage and give a link. This idrive is not so convenient.
WE HAVE ANOTHER BRIAN SILAS here...
Regards,
Aditya

Naveen,
When I get home, I will definitely download and listen to "Paalirukkum".
Beethoven's Pathetique is one of my favorites. Let me listen to your rendering.
Thanks

Aditya,
Thanks for your encouraging comments. Our Indian guys & girls have lot of potential and if they are given proper training on piano, definitely they can do well. Right now, compared to Westerners we are at very low level in Piano. last week, on radio I was listening to a 10yr old girl (Jana-Leigh Weiss from Utah) playing 'The Juggler' on piano. It was so amazing. She was very expressive and got a good rhythmic sense. she was humorous too.
I have a piano student named 'Mayuri' who is 7 or 8 years old. (Srikanth must have know her. she is Manoj's (Owner of Yash) daughter). She can play Beethoven's 'Fur Elise' without hesitation & with good expression. She plays the tough part in Fur Elise very easily.
Well.. why I'm trying to say this is, if you learn WCM or Indian classical music well, you can adopt lot of techniques you learnt in WCM to our tamil songs and that will give a real good effect and make any song classic.

I think for me that had been playing the keyboards all this long, piano was very difficult to play at the beginning. I tried playing a few pieces (that I had so much control earlier) on the piano - i couldnt even punch two notes together! Theres a lot of technique to playing the piano as u say, and I believe one needs a good tutor as well. I am taking private lessons now, and my tutor elaboates on the expressions, touch and so many other cool stuff (which I knew by listening but couldnt reproduce them). So if we want young people to play the piano back home - we should bring music lessons to schools...

guys, please watch A.V.Ramanans sapatha swarangal, you will know how talented are our kids are,
secondly as far as india is concerned western classical music takes the back seat, It is indian classical music that comes first, next is film music, 3rd place might be western classical music. Kids of this genereration have great platform to show their skills, many of us back in my generation (70-80's) did not have such things.

Swamiji,
There are advantages over hard touch. When you play fast runs, the possibility of hitting wrong notes is less. Then you can show the expressions pp & ff very well. Mechanical action is very well regulated.
Initially, it will be difficult for a keyboard player to play on piano or keyboard with weighted keys. But you can pick it up very fast. At one stage, you may not like the feather touch keyboard!
But there are lot of disadvantages over acoustic piano. It is expensive, heavy, need to be tuned every 6 months, needs humidifier during winter, difficult to mic., excellent place for rats to live.. despite all these headaches, just to enjoy the tone color and touch I bought this monstor! forgot to add one more thing.. need to pay $100 for movers :(
there are some advantages too..
you can play when there is no power.
u can keep all your snacks, coffee over the piano and enjoy eating and playing!
I'm glad that you are taking piano lessons. have fun! try Bach pieces... (veral ellaam thaana mudichu pottu chikku vizhundhuvidum!)

BTW. I've played a medley (IR's Vaanmegam song and Punnagai Mannan Theme together)
Don't take this recording seriously. (I missed timing in 2, 3 places, vaanmegam song's interlude and Punnagai mannan's theme piano run was complete sodhappal!) Vijay.. see how I have changed the mood for Punnagai Mannan theme! made it very happy ;)

Have fun!

I like your work titled "Gurus" or something that sounds like that. I think you dedicated that to Ilayaraja. Where's it? I don't see it on your webpage.
Thanks,
Aditya

Very nice Naveen. You have very good fingers. I sequenced this song before, but I lost it in my old comp.

Naveen,
I do not have a UA-30 even though I did all those research to buy one. Since I dont do anything productive/creative like you it is a luxury for me so it is waiting. But to answer your question,I think it is just that your CPU is getting bogged down reading from the USB bus. What is your processor speed ?. Do you have enough memory or is it swapping ?
Re: your compositions.
All I can say is that it brought back very nice nostalgic memories - i.e. the times when I used to study in a convent school. A frail, old nun used to teach piano to very few students. We kids used to hang around the trellised hall curious about the pleasant acoustic sound. Alas, she soon passed away :(.
But every St Mary'f Festival being in the 'Marians' team in the class I used to take offerings to the church. Ofcourse, like you mentioned there was this choir with organ, accordions etc in the high-cielinged church with stained glass windows and a very lovable and old spanish priest (Father).
Anyways..I am rambling but do keep up the good work. You are already getting good encouragement. One thing ..your uncle was right..even though I love to hear good tamil movie songs...it looks like the movie industry is not a good place to work in. So think albums :) not Music Directorship :)
(just a friendly advice :) ).

It's a wonderful advise. Even I feel the same. There's hardly anything creative that can be done in Films for various obvious reasons.

Naveen (and others)
I am rt now learning Piano (from the music school at my university) and I can identify with all the problems that u mentioned abt (with regards to the hard touch)
I have a question. After playing for some time, my thumbs lock up, ( i hope u understand what i mean ) so I have to "break" it .. or it becomes difficult :-) Can somebody post some kind of remedy?
thanks
hari

Hari,
I think you are tensed & keeping your fingers stiff while playing. You have to keep your fingers lose (relaxed position). When you strike a key, do not apply your hand weight to your
fingers. You have to move only the fingers and apply the finger weight. Try moving your fingers independently and make sure you give equal pressure when you hit the keys with different fingers.
Strike hard for accented notes. Usually in WCM 1st & 3rd beat are accented. Before playing, try soaking your hands in warm water. This will make your hands soft.
Usually whenever I finish laundry and play the piano, I play like hell... For few minutes I can play very very fast runs! I was wondering how.. then I realized that it is because of the laundry detergent!
Kiru,
I think the problem is because of the swapping. I deleted some unwanted wave files in my hard disk. This time I did'nt get that glitch. well.. I have 400Mhz k6 processor. I think Pentium III processors & above are very good for audio recording purposes. Nice to hear about your Convent memories.
It is not too late. I read an article about a person who started learning piano at the age of 80 and he says that now he is feeling better. His memory, physical coordination, alertness are improved. Interesting.. isn't it!
BTW.. I like to play piano for my own pleasure and to entertain others with similar taste. do not want to do music as a serious profession. anyway thanks for your advice. In case, if any of us in this thread becomes a MD, I would request them to compose original tunes, take a decision that he/she will not copy (even if the director forces them to do so!)
Swamiji,
Sorry to hear that you lost your 'Vaan megam' sequence. I can make out.. you would have reproduced 100% the original. try again. Next time dont forgot to take backup in a floppy once in 2 or 3 hrs ;)
Today I played 'Raaja Kaiyavacha' Song.. one of my school time favorites. Some of my elders adviced me not to play this song as it has got lot of double meaning content. who cares...! I like the tune... thats enough...! I don't associate any tune with lyrics, region or religion.
There are many portion of this song, I've played in WCM style (especially Piano Sonatas style)
Hope you'll enjoy the different way of playing! (This piano version is my own idea!)
check my idrive http://www.idrive.com/njebaraj for 'Raaja Kaiyavachaa' song.
Aditya,
I have problems with my home page. once it is fixed, I'll give links to these mp3 files.
