UV: I do like it as you thought. Not the usual music you'd see in movie scores. Cant wait to see the movie!

Hi Jay
I saw the movie man.
Shyamalan is really gifted directory.
I dont know how he is able to get that kind of acting out of the kids simply amazin.
One more important thing in this movie is the BGM,
unlike others he has proved just by giving us the natural sounds like cricket chirping, silence you can scare the hell out of audience without 100 violin and horns blowing out
I strongly recommend this movie for that
I am sure Howard will be nominated for an academy award for his score
anyway anything new from you folks
busy with jobs i guess..

Can anyone care explain about different type of bass instruments.
I was listening to Eagels song 'NY Minute'
the bass runs was superb,it sounded like fretless bass.
Hope someone care to explain
thanks

UV, my univ has got a decent music school, and one of the thing I have been doing these days is to talk to different musicians there, abt the instruments they play and like. I met a person that plays double bass. BEsides I have couple of books on intrumentation, and this is some of the information from these two sources. I wud post more as I keep meetin other instrumentalists.
The one that is used mostly now is the 4 string one. 3 stringed ones used to used before. The 4 stringed has the advantage of wider compass than the 3 stringed, and u can have one more open string. THe 4 stringed is tuned in fourths (E A D G, lowest being E), while the three stringed is tuned in 5ths (lowest being G).
Fingering cud be quite tough, to get enough pressure to press the string to the finger board. And if ur at the top, very close to the nut, the max stretch between ur first and fourth fingers would only cover a full tone. Usually at lower registers on a string 1-4 is used for a full tone, and 2-4 for a half tone. Sometimes a bassoon or a tuba is played along, to have a better tone color.
Chords are not advised on a single double bass. A few two note chords are possible, but not advisable. If needed, the notes are divided among two double basses. yes, if the chord involves any of the adjacent open strings, then u can do it on one double bass. These are somethings i can remember right now. Running out of time, I will write nore when i remember anything else.

Solo effort means as an individual artist and not as a member of the group Eagles.

Hey ramesh,
Good work man! Listened to all the songs, saw the photos. Lot of piano, drums and bass. I also liked the theme of the album. The recording is very professional...I guess the rent paid off! How long did you guys rent the studio?
My favourite is the second song "Inbam". nice groove but I thought the bass guitar needed a bit more punch.

Hi Jay ! Thanks for the nice comments :)
We were hoping to get done with everything in
four days... but took 8 days, partly because
the sound engineer was new to indian instruments and it was a learning exp for him. NExt time around (hopefully there will be a next time) I think it will be quicker... The vocals must have taken 3 days overall.. I will pass on your comments to the team :)
thanks again !

Ramesh
This is my first impression of the samples and my pick in the order of the ones I liked
Thunichal - Started with a heaymetal startup and slowly guitar lead brings in the carnatic flavour and smoothly blends into Sriranjani ragam with violin, mridangam and kanchira picking up the pace with guitar distortion in background, not much of our tamil songs ever had that kind of feel.
Sanchalam - with nice spanish style guitar strumming, nice harmonies for backup and building into a heavy emotion kind of song
Kaadhal - very carnatic opening but nice though and good piano backup wish i could listen more to this, guess have to buy the cd :)
Sogam - simple melody with simple and neat chords change, nice piano interludes
Pidivadam- Techno beats and with kanchira sounds add unique sound to this song very pep song indeed
Inbam - This song intially starts with simple fulte lead into heavy rock based one lots of drum rolls, guitar lead and all to a decent tune.
Overall A very good Album and wonderful effort and pass on my congrats and best wishes to Mahesh Shankar and rest of the guys.
Guys,Aditya,Eshwar and Others please do give listen to these folks
Jay how are you man,any new composition from you

Joy feel is fully captured in the above score.
Whoever performed Rock Guitar - Superb.
Thunichal - Courage. Unfortunately the starting bit has really disturbed my attention...when i was almost settled to enjoy...there's a twist and it was on and off settling and disturbing with the Rock Guitar. I am sure it was free flow creativity but kept on making me think where's it going to lead...but when the mridangam entered...it was again smoothened the emotion. I realized it takes time to settle with this score...Starting is unusual and i don't know if I am missing any traditional aspects of any particular style...

Now I know why I felt so about Thunichal...
- Heavy Metal started up with Melody Structure
that sounded like "Saveri" ragam...All has
theevra swaras...Then it flows suddenly into
another melodic structure "SriRanjani" ragam.
I wasn't prepared so early and so suddenly
into this transition. This may be an
appropriate way of capturing the intent
of the mood.
To me listening to any music is like visiting a beautiful park and i treat the musicians/composer as the one who made a trail for the listeners to walk and enjoy the things in a way that the trail made....
Imagine going to niagara falls -> as a visitor I can't see everything myself or might see something else which others were not seeing:-))
But look at the way they put up the trail to watch hurricane deck...unimaginable experience...
Same way I enjoyed Mugangal...it's a good experience...Mahesh has put a nice trail around to see the emotions...
By the way ragas are also like best tested trails laid by earlier musicians...sometimes as composer/musician we tend to break the trail and go our way -> it worked out many times for many...you never know you will be the first one to make another good path...
Good Luck Guys.
I enjoyed Mugangal...
