guys
Best is to use cakewalk for midi, and protools for audio. if anyone planning to buy protools, just wait for a month, digi002 is coming out, it is a fireware interface, really good for $1700.
best is Pro tools tdm which is simple to use, but its costly.(starts@8k)
You can start with digi001, ptle. however digi002 is going to be out soon. both requires a powerful pc with winxp. I just reworked my studio with 3pcs each running protools, cakewalk and samplers etc. going good.

When you expand your studio with more sound modules, samplers and synths you need a way to bring in everything together. Thats were software helps. I thinks its very important that you're good with a professional sequencing/mixing software.
Aditya: Good that you have a engineer to learn from. What did you buy? Digi 001?

Thats true Srikanth. Even ProStudios I think uses Cubase/Cakewalk/logic for sequencing and ProTools only for mixing. Nuendo is also supposed to be great for Audio.
Did you guys know that EMagic was recently acquired by Apple. So there's no more development for PC!!

Srikanth, now that you're here thought I'll ask you a question:
How do you work with cakewalk? DO you use Keyboard/mouse or do you have a controller?

on: Tue Jul 23 07:51:38 EDT 2002
Jay I use only pc keyboards, But I use a logitec wireless pc keyboard.I still use cakewalk pro 3.1 , very easy and stable version.
controllers are still way high :) and has some restrictions.
:)

also, the problem with protools is it is monopoly, like the interface does not work with others tools
however the best part is it is 99.9% error/bug free, I recently had a recording session for straight 100 hrs non-stop (about 5 days)
the system did not bomb out or crash even once,
I recorded about 55 tracks of audio it was very smooth (WinXP). There was no latency at all
I see why pro's use protools, it is dam stable.
But its midi implementaion is by far weak than cakewalk. Regardngi cubase and others, there are many people loyal to them, every thing has good and bad. Protoolsle 5.3.1 has video also included.
Recording/editing/mixing in protools is a so easy!..:)
imo, All the audio products are some what simple and good these days, it is your choice to choose the best and stick on to it..:)

Guys (hi srikanth !!) now that DVD writers are around $500 ..have any of you considered writing your track as 96Khz/24bit onto a DVD ?? I find DVD/SACD players to be of high resolution. This way you can check out what is the maximum extent you can push your mix. I have a few 96Khz/24bit Audio only DVDs which sound like I am listening to a 'master tape'.

kiru,
May sound lame, but how far is DVD audio players supported in the market? I mean we in the US maybe able to use it, what about other markets. I think it will take sometime before we get DVD audio players accessible like CD players these days. Though the idea is good enough, it may not be practical IMHO.
BTW, if the audio resolution is the only reason why we have to go for DVD, then AFAIK MP3 supports 24/96, or does it?
Cheers

DTS music are coming out in English. If you have home theater it splits the DTS song into 6 channels. The Song will surround you!! We don't need a D.V.D player to play DTS music. Any CD player will do. But if the CD player supports six channels and DTS decoding you can hear the in surround format.

JJ,
But I think kirus question was regarding encoding our recordings as DVD audio rather than simple CD audio, and my reply was that DVD audio is not accessible to all. I know that we can have 6 channel audio on normal CDs too.

Easwar,
You can record only audio in a DVD. I just have a DVD player which I bought two years ago (but I use an external DAC). I dont know of any CD players that can play 6 channels. Usually, it is DVDs which are DTS encoded or have a DTS track. What distinguishes a particular format of a player is the wavelength of the laser and the way the data is encoded/laid out.
Right now, the contenders to resolution/fidelity are DVD-Audio and SuperAudioCD (SACD), with SACD getting more support from audiophiles (and companies like Sony and Phillips). But I was not talking about these. Just DVD with only audio in them.

Kiru,
My point was not regarding whether it is do-able or not. I am not so well knowledged in the technical aspects of the hardware. But don't you think people should buy the hardware to play DVD audio. We can afford it, since we are supposedly heavily paid computer techies. What about others who want to listen to our music. DVD hardware is not affordable in India or other countries as it is affordable in USA or European countries. That is my point. Maybe after 5 years we will all be hearing DTS surround music through DVD players like we do today with CD players.
Aditya,
Great! I heard Rehman has used a lot of old Tamil songs in it? It may anyway be different for the western ears I guess.
Cheers

On the topic of software sequencers, samplers and the like, I dont believe the Windows OS is really built for doing this, with special regards to it's stability. I think that the way to go really would be a Mac. Digidesign's Digital Performer is almost universally accepted as the foremost of all MIDI sequencers. It really does a great job. Protools, does suck with MIDI. MOTU's time pieces are the really critical piece of hardware I think is vital to a good MIDI setup - Internal MIDI clocks are really flaky at best.
Let's see what Apple does with Emagic. One hopes they do the exact same thing they did with final cut pro, turning it into an industry standard, and drawing people away from Avid, which was just a dinosaur both in terms of prices and ease of use. If Apple's going to push Logic up to compete with Protools, I think that would be awesome. So, I would wait a little bit before investing in a Protools system.
Depending on your needs for a sequencer, if it is Windows, I would research Logic and Cubase SX. Cakewalk's Sonar is the only other consideration, and I dont think it's quite there yet. SX has a lot of improvements over previous releases, and is really cool, though I love Logic, personally.
Logic can handle Audio pretty well too, if you are just starting out. Depending on your rig, you may need to get either an 8x8 MIDI interface or a 4x4 interface, and a really good soundcard with very low latency, and good drivers. I think this is pretty much what you should look at for a "starter-studio".
As you play around with it, and keep working with it, you will find that you are able to figure out what your requirements really are, and that will help you decide where to go from there.
HTH
