'kannodu kaanbathellaam' is abheri, no doubt.
Vidyasagar has given another Abheri recently in Anantha Krishna - 'vaanam varai vantha thalaivaa' (Harini). (His first was 'poothirukkum vaname' in puthayal)

RR/Ramesh: It's got that Kafi Hint RR, you're right, but is actually in KEERAVANI RAGA..... We got it confirmed by an 'expert'.... Notice how it has the Keeravani notes - like IR's 'Keeravani' song.....

Unless the raga for 'manaivi amaivadhellaam' has already been resolved, it sounds like mishra bhaageshri. I tried to sing it with the old Lata classic naa bolE, naa bOlE, naa bOlE rE and it sounded similar. However, I could have inadvertently done a sruthi bEdham which could have led to the similarity.

RajaG, I am positive that it is not Bhagesri. The similarity is because, the descending notes in the song are those of Karahapriya, the MelaKartha for Bhagesri.

Talking of Bagesri raga, someone said somewhere IR has not composed a song in the raga(compared to the many numbers from MSV and/or others in the raga). I think the song "sandhosam kAnAdha vAzhvundA" from the movie "vasanthi" (mohan's starrer)is set to Bagesri. Is IR the MD of the movie?Experts please confirm on both the raga and the MD.

Saketh,
I think the MD is chandrabose.

on: Wed Feb 10 06:25:16 EST 1999
saketh,
IR has set a song to Bageshree - vAdi en gappankizhangE - listen to the charanam. There is another song in kiLip pEchchu kEtka vA. BTW, the MD for vasanthi is indeed Chandrabose.

Ragapiriyan,
Sonnathu starts with S. This is what I inferred.I have not taken into consideration the gamakams and this would only complicate it further.

Ramaswamy: I thought that Vandhadhu Vandhadhu from Kili Petchu Ketkavaa was in Sri Ranjani. Both Bhagayashree and Sri Ranjani take the same Arohanam/Avarohanam but have different paryogams....IR has done some wonderful Sri Ranjanis. IR has included Bhagayashree in the Ragamalike Sangathamizh kaviye - Abheri & Bageshree from Manadhil urudhi vEndum

Hi
"En swasak kAtRE" number (in ESK) by MG Srikumar sounds like an excellent 'thAlAttu' . The tune is a haunting melody and the second interlude veena, chitra's humming puts me to sleep. What raga is this based on?
- From: Geetha (@ gatekeeper.oracle.co.uk)
on: Mon Feb 15 06:52:58 EST 1999
rameshb: Chithra's humming and Balachandar's Veena is in Neelambari Ragam, which is said to put one to sleep - Thalaatu Ragam......It's been done so well that the effect is exactly as desired.... The rest of the song has Kalyani touches to it, but I need more listens to pinpoint the Raga.....Sriram, any ideas?

Geetha,
thanks a lot for your info, interesting to know neelambari is supposed to put one to sleep. I wonder how would you classify the number 'chinna chinna mazhaithuLigaL' . The tune is similar to 'dil bar jane', which is a garba(dhadiya raas)dance number, i like this one more though. You are absolutely right in saying that the album has variety and ARR has tried to cater to the diversified tastes. You have 2 excellent melodies(thirakkatha,en swasa katre) , 2 love songs (theendai, chinna chinna mazhai),1 ceylonish, and one for front benchers. Vairamuthu has played a vital role in this album and deserves due credit. I place this album few notches above any other albums of ARR.

RameshB: I would say that Chinna Chinna Mazlai is in Madhyamavathi Raga. It's interesting to note that ARR has used Sri ragam and Madhyamavathi in the same album(There is only one note different between the two - Gandharam). He used Madhyamavathi in the strangest of songs, Mutthu Paapa from Vandicholai Chinnarasu too.....My sentiments exactly on the quality/listenability of the album.

Hi folks:
I read in tamilcinema.com about the usefulness of certain ragas. Listening
to songs based on some ragas apparently has some benefits.
Example:
Asavari - helps to relieve headache
Karakarapriya - helps get rid of hunger (?)
Neelambari - will put a crying kid to sleep.
and so on. I have also heard that amrithavarshini can bring rain.
Can anyone add more to this list?
Also, is there a latest version of tf songs/ragas
list other than the one linked at the top of this page.
Thanks,
Manian

very interesting! is 'nila kAyuthu'(SKV) set on karagarapriya ?;-)) ESK has 'En swask katre' set on Neelambari (source: Geetha) really put me to sleep.

Hi,
My guess for the song "Abhinaya Sundari Aadugiral En Aasai Kanalai Oodhugiral..." from Mirudangha Chakravarhy (Sivaji , Prabhu ...) is TILLANG.
Can the experts confirm this...?
