Hai anand,
Probably you must have heard "kaadhal Oviyum"(not the one in alaigal oyvathillai but sung by Sujatha) before making the above statement. You have almost the same intelude coming in that song(!!). It was by IR and way back in 80s.

Hi there,
I think IR's song - "Pagalile oru nilavinay kandaen" in the film - Ninaive oru sangeetham is in ABHOGHI
any comments?

Hai sudharshan,
Even I feel so. But I think there is some similarity in the note of Sriranjani and Abhogi. Sriram can you clarify ?

Sriram Lakshman:
I tried playing "nila" on the keyboard. no where I could find M2 (since you mentioned it could be hamir kalyani- a janya of kalyani). the first swaraphrase goes like smgppmpgrsnssmgppmpm.. gmddmnndsrsndp... (it is distinctly M1 with M2 its a different effect). This is heard good in scale of maand.
the next swaraphrase "ado pogirathu..." srgrggrgpmg could be begada since its arohana is sgrgmpdndps+. (clustering of vakra prayoga).
both are from shankarabharanam. also i remember seeing it as 'misra maand' in the ragam sangeetham serial long ago. however, i am only a theoretician, if you do have any reasons to believe it is begada or hamir kalyani pls let me know.

Murali Shankar,
Both are karaharapriya Janyams. Abhogi's ascending notes are SRGMDS and those of Sriranjani are SRGMDNS. The difference is only the Nishaadam.
Vasu,
My knowledge is also superficial only. I was just going by the "Saayal". Will get back to you tomorrow.
Somebody wanted to know if "thuyilaatha pennondru kanden" was in Hari kambhoji or not. Yes it actually is.

Could anybody let me know what raag "Manaivi amaivathellaam" from "Manmatha Leelai" is set to. I will give a shot at it tonight.

Thank a lot for that Sriram. I hope with this I will be able to differentiate. The song you mentioned is a real toughie. From the tune I think it is MSV + KJ combo - is that right ?
"thuyilaadha" - I need a clarification. thenishadam in this song is N2. But as far I know thw the Nishadam in Harikamboji is N1. Can u clarify ?

Murali,
It is only N1 that is used in "Thuyilatha". I will post the notes tomorrow or the day after.
Yes, that is a KJ+MSV combo and I am sure that is something close to Karaharapriya with just a difference of a note. Will give it a try today.

Hi,
I know this is not a place, but Im forced to post here due to its activity.
Some one was asking for on-line piano lessons in the ICM vs WCM thread which now stays abandoned which I inadvertently stumbled upon. Here is one good site I found:

Sriram and Murali:
Kallapiran's book says manaivi amaivadhellaam
is in varALi. I looked in Ragapravaham. What a
strange combination of notes varALi has ..
s g1 r1 g1 m2 p d1 n3 s / s n3 d1 p m2 g1 r1 s
Two close groupings of swaras.. n3 s r1 g1 and
m2 p d1.

thx Ragapriyan. Is not "Kana kana ruchira" - the pancha ratna kruthi in Varali ? Let me sing/play and let you know of my inference. Incidentally Varali is never taught as there exists a superstition that it roughencs the relation between student and teacher :))

Strange, when I played it on the Keyboard, I found the ascending notes to be similar to those of HariKambhoji and descending notes to be similar to Karaharapriya. I had decided to call it Harikara. Finding the Raaga for this song is like committing hara-kiri though listening to it is far from it, a great melody.

Sorry for the duplicate posting.
Murali, in "Thuyilaatha PeNNondru KaNden", when PS sings "Malarukku Pagayaaga" in the charanam, esp. exactly at the letter "ukku" N1 is being used. N2 does not come into picture at all.
Try playing the other classic in the same movie "MaNa naaattiya medayil Aadinen" by PS, a great melody. It is a mix of Natabharaivi and Hanumathodi. (atleast the scales).

Hai Ramesh,
As aar as I know it is a direct lift rom the carnatic classical "Manavyala kim" - atleast the first two lines. Hope sriram clarifies the raga.

Murali Sankar,
I won't call 'manam virumbuthe' based on Nalinakanti. Some raga close to Kedaram maybe.

Sriram:
I still have some problems sending emails to you.
So I thought of getting some lessons here. Others
can also join-in here, I guess. Yesterday I was
trying to play a few lines from sonnadhu
needhaanaa of Nenjil Or Alayam on KB. From
what I got it looks like the song uses the notes
of HariKambhoji. This is what I got for some lines..
innoru kaigaLilE
pdp nnnn
yaar yaar naanaa
mp md pnd...p
enai maRandhaayO
mpdn nd
En En En ennuyirE
p d n ndpp...m
En En En ennuyirE
p m g rsrg
indru sonnadhu..
rsr ggg etc.
Am I right? Please correct me if I am wrong. What
is the raga of this song?

Some findings.....knowledgeables please clarify... "Naam oruvarai oruvar " from "Kumari Kottam" and "theru paarka vanthirukkum chithirappeNNe" from "Iru thuruvam" seem to be a mix of MMG and Vahula Bharanam with both N1 and N2 being used.
Contrasting songs in NataBhairavi scale, "Mayakkamaa Kalakkama" (sumaithangi), "Ninaikka therintha maname" (anada Jothi) and guess what "Vasanthathil Or NaaL" (moodnru deivangaL) and "Thangappathakathin Mele oru muthu padithathu pole" (EngaL thangam). Try playing all these and please confirm.

Ragapiriyan, I will get back to you on this.
Talking of HK, "Yenna Yenna VaarthaigaLo" from "VeNNiraadai" is set to it.
I think "Vaazhvil sowbaaggiyam vanthathu" from "Thoondil Meen" uses the notes of "lathangi", atleast the pallavi and the I and III charanams. Please confirm.

I read somewhere that the song "orE PAdal unnai azhaikkum" from the movie "engirundhO vandhAl" is set to HariKamboji. Experts please confirm.

Saketh, you have N1 and N2 being used. Purists would not call it HK.
Sivakumar, should be Bhimplas.
Ragapiriyan, I did not have much time yesterday, I returned home at 11:30 PM. I feel that "Innoru" starts with D1 and not P. The Pallavi starts with S. This song uses SR1R2G1G2M1 D1N1. Couldn't determine the Raag. I am leaving for Dallas today and will be returning on Sunday. Will get back to you on Monday.

" Kannodu Kaanbadhellam " from Jeans is said to be in Shuddha Dhanyasi. But it resembles Singara Velaney( Konjum Salangai) at many places though that is of Abheri .
