  I bought a copy of the following book recently:
  
  Thirai Isai, Thamizh Isai, Karnataka Sangeetham
  
  by T.R. Kallapiran.
  (Shakthi Printers, 78, Anna Salai, Madras-2)
  
  It has a DETAILED list of TFM songs made in ragas,
  covering movies released till 1994. For those
  interested in this raga thread, they will find
  this book very valuable.

  I bought the book (for Rs. 45) at:
  
  The Karnatic Music Book Centre
  14, Sripuram First Street, Royapettah
  (Near Ajantha Hotel), Chennai-14. Ph: 8260147.
  
  This is actually a house. A retired BHEL man is
  doing a valuable service by selling books related
  to Carnatic music at his house. You can get any
  book related to CM in that small place.
  
  BTW, the list of tfm songs in ragas that is there
  at the top of this page, compiled by Ramasubramanian,
  Kannikeswaran and others, has also been used by
  the author, Kallapiran, to make the long list in
  his book. The author has also taken help from
  Madurai GS Mani (who was a consultant to MSV on
  Carnatic music) for making the list, apart from
  others.
  
  At Shankar Hall (near the music academy) I also
  got hold of Madurai GS Mani's three audio cassettes
  on TFM and Carnatic Music. The cassettes
  cover about 20 ragas, but overall it is not that
  impressive.

  I had earlier asked the Raga of the song 'Thuyilaada Penn Ondru Kanden'. As my query didn't elicit any response, I tried harder to sing the notes in sequence. It did sound like HARI KAMBHOJI. Probably it's Janyam.

  iam not sure about the raga of this song. but i know that 'pazhamuthircholai' from varusham 16 is said to have been composed in harikamboji. perhaps this might be of some little help to u.

  Ragapriryan,
  There is a book "Ragapravaham" which is available at "Giri Trading Agencies" (close to Kabaali temple, Mylapore) that lists all 72 melakartha raagas with their janyams in such a way that once you know the sequence of notes in a song, you could easily find the relevant Melakartha Raaga or its Janyam as the case maybe. I use this book esp. in cases I am not able to make out the Raaga offhand. If you have a keyboard , that much better.

  Can anybody tell me the raga of "alai meedhu"
  song from kAdhal Kavidhai. Lot of traces of
  Hindolam is there. Some body mentioned it as

  Yes, Ragapiriyan, it is. I liked ARR's usage of Maand in "Anjali Anjali". I think it is a Janya of Shankarabharanam which again has been used very well by TFM MDs. "Andru Vanthathum ithe Nila", "Kalyaana NaaL paarka sollalaama" , "Naan endral athu AvaLum Naanum" are good examples.

  I was wondering if IR has scored any other song except "Indraikku yenindha" in Abhogi. "Kaalai Nera poonguyil" in "amman kovil kizhakkaley' is a beautiful song which I doubt is in in this raga (atleast partially). SPB is amazing.

  Nothing to beat ARR's use of Maund in the first interlude of "Narumughaye,Narumughaye"...the amazing use of this inbetween Naati/Gambhiranattai has a good effect....making the song tremendously melodious.
