Saravanan:
Kanimuththu Pappa was not a remake of Andaaz. It has
a completely different storyline. This was the
movie that introduced SP Muthuraman as a director.
It has Sridevi coming as a little girl.. she is the
one who sings 'chiththi sollu sollu' in the movie.
This was also the first movie for actress Jaya
(don't confuse her with JJ). She comes for a short
while at the beginning and sings 'rAdhaiyin nenjamE'.
In fact the movie starts off with this song.
Being a low budget movie I think the producer
employed some unknown copycat MD named Raju
to lift the Hindi songs you mentioned. Whatever,
'rAdhaiyin nenjamE' did become a big hit in TN...
PS's voice being simply tooo sweet!

SK, a correction. Jaya's (Guhanathan's wife) firts film was not kani muthu pappa.. It was a film from AVM banner, in whicg Gemini ganesan and Muthuraman acted. Jaya acts MR's sister and dies unnaturally. I am not able to recollect the film name (may be Saravanan can get it)

Subbu, perhaps you are referring to 'Sudarum Sooravaliyum'?
SK- TV Raju was an old time Telugu MD. He was the MD for some films dubbed from Telugu in the 50s like Jayasimman. In the 70s, he did 2 tamil films-Kanimuthu Papa and Rani yaar kuzhandhai.

Yesyesyesyes Saravanan Sir... Jaya Guhanathan's first film was "S..m S...m". I remember that her name was shown in very first title card with caption like "Indha padaithin moolam Jaya endra kurinji malarai arimuga paduthigirom" :-))
But she became famous thru that Kani muthu pappa especially with PS' song "Radhayin nenjame".

Saravanan and Subbu:
Thanks for the info. I don't know any details about
Sudarum Sooravaliyum. Can you give more details?
Who was the MD? What are the songs in it?

sk sudarum sooravaLiyum is a very good film. I watched it without any expectations and was totally surprised . Jayas performance was very good. Shoban babu acted as her jodi and venniraadai nirmala is Muthus pair.
Songs:
anbu vandhadhu ennai aaLa vandhadhu(2 versions one by SPB for Gemini and other a duet by TMS,SJ for Muthu and jaya)
anubhavam thaane varavendum yaaridam kettu peravendum-TMS and LRE (for Muthu and VN)

sk/ Ramki-
Addendum on 'Sudarum Sooravaliyum'-1971.
Two more memorable songs from the film were:
Thaalikku Veli tharum- SJ
Muthu mani kannanukku- SJ
An unusual feature in this film is that MSV has completely excluded PS from it.
Btw, the other version of 'Anbu vandhadhu' also has LR Anjali in the beginning- perhaps for the child who grows up to become Jaya in the course of the song--later SJ and TMS take over.

Saravanan, even when PS was in full form during 60s, 70s, 80s, MSV has not used PS in a few movies. In fact, the mutual understanding and cooperation between both were very good.
1. Police-kaaran magal (Sridhar's; all songs given to SJ)
2. Sumai Thaangi (Sridhar's; all songs given to SJ)
3. KaNNamma (KR Vijaya's own film; all songs given to LRE)
4. Sudarum Sooravaliyum (AVM's; all songs given to SJ)
5. Meenava Nanban (Sridhar/MGR's; all songs given to VJ)
6. Sirithu Vaazha vendum (MGR's; all songs given to SJ/VJ)
Of course, later part of 80's, beginning of 90s, during which PS was only given some select songs, which I did not consider.
My observation is, the discontinuity could have been due to non-availability of PS that anything else, as PS-MSV combo did give a lots hits.

Read it as
"My observation is, the discontinuity could have been due to non-availability of PS than anything else, as PS-MSV combo did give a lots hits Later also"

Subbu-
that's why I called SS unusual, due to the PS excusion. Some points:
1. Policekaaran Magal- LRE had one song: Porandhaalum pombalayaa porakkakoodathu (with Chandrababu)
2.Another notable no-PS film in the early 70s- Ganga Gowri (BR Panthulu)
3.In my opinion, after VJ's entry and SJ shooting to fame in Annakili, MSV started giving more songs to these two singers. For instance 'Avargal'-1977 was a SJ show all the way.
Many of MSV's films from 75 onwards had VJ as the predominant singer.Variety had become the order of the day by then. Of course, he still gave PS some excellent songs, but the number was definitely less than before.

This is the first time I am hearing about a movie named Kannamma. Any good songs in it?
- From: Subbu (@ 216.52.49.5)
on: Tue Aug 27 03:38:51 EDT 2002
sk, it was KR Vijayas own film, acted with Muthuraman... it was expected to be big hit. KRV appeared with lots of rich costumes. All songs (not even a single i remember... am sorry), was rendered by LRE, which was totally mismatch for KRV. It was rated a poor film by Kumudham.

Saravanan: The bunch of songs going to another singer was an exception in 60s and 70s. Only I could sense that it was due to non-availability of PS, as I don't see any pattern of directors or banners which specially omitted PS.
Yes, as you said, VJ was given very good songs by MSV (Moondru mudichu, Madurayai meeta sundara padiyan etc), but at the same time MSV maintained PS as his lead (Mayor meenakshi, Magarasi Vazhga, Thirudi, Urimai Kural, Netru indru naalai, Thanga padakkam, Agni satchi etc).

sk/Subbu, the title song of 'Kannamma' was by PBS- quite a good song. The film was horrible.
Subbu- though I agree that there is no pattern or banners which specifically omitted PS, I still maintain that from 75, there was a marked change in MSV- he didn't give that many songs to PS.
Take the following films by MSV from 1975-1979:-I don't think they had any song by PS. (I may be mistaken in some of them, though)
Apoorva Ragangal
Akka
Unakkaga Naan
Payanam
Avargal
Aaru Pushpangal
Sila nerangalil sila manithargal
Pattina pravesam
Punitha Anthoniar
Meenava Nanban
Andhaman Kadhali
Oru veedu oru ulagam
Oru nadigai nadagam paarkiraal
Taxi Driver
Nizhal nijamaagirathu
Pilot Premnath
Vanakkathukkuriya kaadhaliye
Vandikkaran magan
Imayam
Kuppathu raja
Vayasupponnu

I think 'Aaru Pushpangal' was by Chandrabose.

No C V, Aaru Pushpangal was definitely by MSV- He made Chandrabose sing 'Yendi Muthamma' in that film.

There was a song called `Thirunaalai kaanaatha theranathe..Pugazh paadum mana vaazhvu sirayanathe' from the movie `Sahothari' I guess, not sure. Was it by PS or PL?

Saravanan!
I think meenava nanban has a TMS+PS duet
"Neeye than enakku manavaati, unnai malayittu kaipidithu cheerati" ...
You have listed kuppathu raja also. I remember one song, a duet by PS&SPB " puli variguthu, puli varuguthu"
- From: Saravanan (@ 195.229.241.242)
on: Wed Aug 28 07:52:35 EDT 2002
Kalai- Neeye thaan enakku manavaati is from 'Kudiyirundha kovil' Meenava nanban was a total VJ show-3 duets and one solo.
That Kupputhu Raja climax song which you have mentioned- I don't think it was by PS.

One of the good "jive" number as called by the Ball Room Dancing Community (if anyone familiar with Ball Room Dancing/Latin Jazz Dancing Techniques) was rendered by Asha Bhosle in the Hindi Movie "Aasha" ( I was very ignorant, thought, it was named after her all these years)and composed by Chitalkar Ramachandra. Lyrics were by Rajinder Krishan and goes by "Ina Mina Dika". A great "jive" note which was immensely popular in the late 50s. I wish Kimberly Mitchell (my favorite Ballroom Dancer for the last few years) could dance to that note in one of the Ballroom Dancing Championships. The same song was dubbed in tamil for the movie "Adisaya Penn". You would'nt win a lottery for guessing it right. It was by TFM Icon P Susheela. Literature tells us that many in the south thought the same song was by north indian legend Asha Bhosle. I could recall that PS lamented,in one of her audience with the press, that she was offered many a in-house assignments with "Filmistan Studios" (SD Burman Saheb was their corporate house composer forgive me if I got the name of the studio wrong) but was her focus was too narrow or she was not well equipped to make those business decisons at an early age. Listening to both the "jive " versions, I could hardly tell the difference myself. The composition itself per se, had 1940's traditional jazz orchestra influences (Glen Miller/Benny Goodman/Cab Calloway/Harry James/Sammy Kaye/Artie Shaw) on Chitalkar Ramachandra. Though the composition was original in Hindi, it was dubbed in tamil for the aforementioned movie by KVM (or was it by Chitalkar again). The song deserves a special mention (for the sake of P Susheela) after it was overshadowed by a north indian contemporary.

Vicky, Pl post the link for the song similar to "Ina Mina Dika" of "Adisaya penn". Also can you get the link for "Aaah Na Peliyanta" from "Mayabazaar" (Telugu Version)
