Kalai,
Reg. Veda- or S.Vedachalam, which was his full name, he was a genius, sadly reduced to a copy-cat MD, due to many factors- most important being compulsion by Modern Theatres to lift Hindi tunes and also survival.
However, quite the opposite of what you have said, he was a copy cat only in his later years- in his initial films- he showed all the hallmarks of a great composer of rare merit- just sample his creations in the early years:
1. Menaka- 1955- stg. KRR & Lalitha, had in its title the MDs as CN Pandurangan and S Vedachalam- memorable songs like 'Kanavu Ninaivaagume'- (Radha) Jayalakshmi and 'Manam pol ini vaazhalaam'- KRR &RJ.
2.Marmaveeran-1956- stg.Sriram & Vijayanthimala- the first film of Veda as an independent MD had some superb songs-my pick is 'Thudikkum Vaalibamey' by R Balasaraswathi
3.Anbu Engey-1958-SSR & Devika- had all super hit songs with a variety of voices:
Dingiri Dingaaley-TMS, Kaaya pazhamaa-RJ, Sollu nee raja- R Balasaraswathi, Eththanai kodi panam irundhaalum-PS, Poovil vandu- AMR and Jamunarani, Amirthayogam vellikizhamai-TMS &PL, and three wonderful solos by Jamunarani- Meley parakkum Rocketu, Aana aavanna and Kaadhal endraal enna-
9 songs, and each one an exquisite creation!
4.Manamaalai-1958- Geminiganesh & Savitri- again many forgotten gems- S Janaki's 'Nilayaaga veesuthey' remains my favourite and is definitely among the best songs in her early years, TMS-PS- Nadakkathu jambam palikkathu, is a catchy duet, 'Nadanam Aadinaar' by RJ & PL is a classic, while PBS' 'Radhey Radhey'is simply scintillating.
5.Minnal Veeran- 1959-Ranjan & Sandhya- 'Kannodu kanninai'- Seergazhi Govindarajan and RJ- is a classical masterpiece with amazing innovations.
6.Parthiban Kanavu-1960- What more proof is required of Veda's talents- aren't the great songs of this classic film enough? MLV's Andhi Mayangudhadi is said to be her favourite among her film songs. The AMR-PS duets are wonderful songs-Pazhagum tamizhey, Kannale naan kanda, and Idhayavaanin Udaya nilavey cannot be creations of just a copy-cat MD.
However, with the 60s, came the monoploly of MSV-TKR and KVM, and Veda got only films of Modern Theatres, except a few exceptions, and he was forced by the producer to lift Hindi tunes.
Kalai and others- sorry for this digression- I know this is PS thread, but I simply had to vent my feelings, for Veda is now sadly known only as a copy cat MD and his original creations are very unfairly ignored.
Sorry, again.

Saravanan,
Your comments on two lullabies mentioned by me earlier please:
1. Kannan enna sonnaan siru pillaiye kanneer varak kaaranam aen kodi mullaiye, kattazhagup pettagame, kann valaraay en madiyil!- PS- Saaynthaadammaa Saaynthaadu-1977-78- a film with Maharishi's story, in which Sreedevi acts as a mentally undergrown girl!
2. Poomugam sivakka, sogamenna naanirukka, thaayin vadivil ennai ninaithu vidu, enakkum azhugai varum thudaithu vidu, ini naane unthan thaaye!-AVM's Amma-1981-82-PS-Saritha

Saravanan: Amirthayogam vellikizhamai (anbu engE, 58) is a dubbed version of reshmi salwar kurta wali ka, roop kahe nahin jaaye nakhrewaali ka (naya daur, mus OP Nayyar, lyr Sahir Ludhianvi, Shamshad Begum & Asha Bhosle). Other songs from naya daur have been dubbed into tamil whether in this film or others I'm not sure - vaazhvinil kOrikkai pOle by TMS & PS? (maang ke saath hamaaraa - Rafi & Asha) comes to mind.

C V-
-small 'malarum ninaivugal' digression:
I can never forget Saainthaadamma Saainthaadu. It came in 1977- and I was 7 years old- having gone to stay with my aunt in Pollachi for the hols.
It was the time when a Children's film called 'King Elephant' was released, and I pestered my aunt to take me to see it. We went to 'Durais' theatre, where it was being screened, but there were no tickets left. I was bitterly disappointed and ready to burst into tears- to ward off this catastrophe, my aunt took me to 'Saaithaadamma saainthaadu' showing at Nallappa theatre next door. I don't remember much of the story. I have vague recollections of Sridevi being a mentally retarded girl and Sivakumar marrying her for her money.
The details I collected much later are that it starred Sivakumar, Sridevi, Jayadevi, Meera, Ashokan and Pushpalatha. Music-Illayaraja. The other song too is good- "Oru Kaadhal devathai'-SPB-PS.
'Kannan enna sonnaan' is a slow gentle song (Perhaps Jayadevi consoling Sridevi, after Sivakumar has been harsh to her)- with long lines- C V, you have left out'Ilanthendrale' between 'Kattazhagu pettagame' and 'Kanvalaraai en madiyil'- soothing interlude bits by IR- PS sounds so comforting, when she sings' Kumari alla, innum kuzhadai endru, Kulavillakkey unnai naan ariven' and without stopping prolongs the last syllable and continues to the next long line.
Poo mugham Sivakka- Amma- 1982
AVM's film dir. by Rajasekhar. Stg-Saritha, Master Vimal, Prathap and Arundhadhi. MD-SG. My favourite song is 'Mazhaye mazhaye'-SPB-SJ. Another PS solo is 'Ammave deivam'.
Poo mugham sivakka has PS at her expressive best.
Especially noteworthy are her voice trembling as she sings 'Indha iravu mudindhu vida vendum, illai ilamai karaindhu vida vendum--' and again the sorrow behind the question' En thookkam engey'? Meaningful lyrics-Vairamithu?

As I remember, TN state govt started very late in 60's to introduc this "Best female playback singer", as Central Govt introduced only in 1969. In addition, TN govt stopped for some years in 1980's.
Can we list the Tamil Nadu state govt award for P.Susheela - "Best female playback singer" - with the following data?
- Year of award
- For which Song
- For which film
- Any remarks
To my very weak memory, PS received for
- Raman ethanai ramanadi (Lakshmi Kalyanam)
- A song from Anbulla aththan
Kalai, Saravana, can you please list out?

Subbu,
I am sorry, I don't know exactly- here is waht I can recollect of TN awards for best female singer:
1. 1968- PS
I am not sure for which film, though- perhaps as you say, for 'Raman eththanai ramanadi' from Lakshmi Kalyanam.
2. 1969- KB Sundarambal
Again, I am only guessing that it was for 'Thunaivan'.
3.1970- S Janaki
- 'Radhayai penn paarkka' from Namma Kuzhandaigal?
The awards, then seem to have been shelved till MGR came to power in 1977:
4.1977-78- S Janaki
- So many possiblities- Avargal, 16 vayathiniley--?
5.1978-79- Vani Jairam
6.1979-80- S Janaki
7.1980-81- PS
- for Anbulla Aththaan? Thanneer thanneer?
8.1981-82- SJ
- for 'Naadham en jeevaney'- Kaadhal Oviyam
9. 1982-83- SJ
Again, the awards seem to have been put on hold till 1988:
10.1988- Chitra
11.1989- PS
'Maganey maganey'- Varam MD-MSV

Confirmation / corrections :-)
1. 1968- PS
Yes. It was for 'Raman eththanai ramanadi' from Lakshmi Kalyanam.
2. 1969- KB Sundarambal
Yes. it was for 'Thunaivan'. It was a bit surprise that PS's "naaLai indha veLai parthu" won Best female playbacn singer award at national level, but not at state level.
3.1970- S Janaki
Correct. It was for 'Radhayai penn paarkka' from Namma Kuzhandaigal (for V. Nirmala)
4.1977-78- S Janaki
It was for 16 vayathiniley.
5.1978-79- Vani Jairam.. i think for "Meghame meghame"
6.1979-80- S Janaki... I think this was for NizhalgaL
7.1980-81- PS
It was for Anbulla Aththaan. Song ??
8.1981-82- SJ
For 'Naadham en jeevaney'- Kaadhal Oviyam
9. 1982-83- SJ
No idea
10.1988- Chitra for Sindhu Bhairavi
11.1989- PS
'Maganey maganey'- Varam MD-MSV
Can anyone else confirm/correct?

Subbu-
1978-79- Vani Jairam- for 'En Kalyana vaibogham' from Azhagey unnai aaraadhikkiren. Palaivanacholai came only in 1981.
1979-80- SJ for Nizhalgal seems likely- Dhooraththil naan kanda un mugham.
1988- Sindhu Bhairavi is not possible, as it came in 1985. 1988- Chitra-perhaps for Agni natchathiram, or En Bommukkutti ammavukku, or Thanga Kalalasam?
Varam starred Prabhu,Amala & Srividya- Horrible film by RCS.

A query... One of the re-made song from Andaaz (I think), in "Kani muthu paapa". It was classic number by PS "Radhayin nenjame kaNNunkku sondhame"...
Who was the MD for that?
Note: I remember many gals used this song to sing during their peN paarkkum padalam :-)

The song you are referring to is dubbed version of a hit nymber from the movie "sharmilee" starring Shashi Kapoor and Rakhee. "Kilte hain Gul yahan". Sung by both Kishore and Lata and composed by SD Burman Saheb.

Vicky, i remmeber that the song was re-make of "Dil mere dhuliyaha..." sung by Kishore only. I guess it was Rajesh khaan movie (Andaaz or so).

No, Subbu, Vicky is right. 'Radhayin nenjame' was a lift from 'Kilthey hain gul yahaan'- Sharmilee- Shashi Kapoor and Rakhee (the latter in a dual role). However, Kanimuthu papa was itself a remake of Andaaz. The other songs from Kanimuthu papa were lifted from Andaaz songs- 'Kaalanagaley'-SPB was a modified adaptation of Kishore's 'Zindagi ek safar', while 'Chiththi sollu sollu'-SJ-Jyothi Khanna was a direct copy of 'Hain na bolo bolo'.
