Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

From the standpoint of the "monarch", there must have been surely a touch of desperation, if not outright panic, during the days leading to NI. One of TFM's all-time great musician had arrived and he was threatening to crush the incumbent with a string of hits having terrific mass appeal. Indeed, the "iyakunar imayam' himself may have felt threatened by the entry of a competent movie-maker in BR, who had had then, what, about three consecutive hits? While Naaz does have a point in that many songs in NI seem to indicate MSV's preoccupation with IR's impending emergence at the top of TFM (the opening number of NI was positively boisterous, reeking of musical bravado -- an MSV repartee in the sense of "Take this!"), there were other songs which were comparable to the best of Moondru mudichu, Aboorva raagangal, and Andh ezhu naatkal. In particular, the numbers Baaradhi kannamma, Kaathirundhen kaathirundhen, Ninaithale inikkum, and Nizhal kandavan have MSV's mellisai stamped all over.
Is NI MSV's best ever? Debatable. I am happy to accept the view that it is a fantastic one.

OISG -
So I'll go ahead and conclude that the above is addressed to me and my comments on NI. That's the clever part :-)
Carefully chosen words deserve a careful, chosen reader, you couldn't not agree?
"Assumed rivalry" and "supposed "glam" repartee" both include a clause - and a cause. The clause was the summation on my part - how the film was hyped, why the film was hyped, what was the contextual fuss all about. That's very much part of the NI history. Your "just" is not the thrust of my "supposed" and hence the (alleged) cynicism belongs to "just" you.
The cause bit:
Well, wouldn't spelling it out be rather like "taking tunes to Ilayaraja?" :-)
And, sorry again, but there was a beta version before the "Let there be light" dazzle came around.
It opened with the line "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Limited edition only. And the line didn't really catch on.)
Talk about prefabrication, like, from aarambaththilirundhey! :-)

MSV's predicament in NI and that of ARR in Boys are probably comparable.

"
in what sense? I dont see any big challengers to ARR yet nor any new trendsetters.

Song of the Day: oru ooril from kaakka kaakka.

- Sung by Karthik. Music by Harris Jeyaraj.
- Udhaya preferred this song to the more famous "uyirin uyirE" from the same film. He writes:

Naaz,
Naaz, you sounded a lot like sasikumar in his cine reviews of yesteryear! lest you misunderstand ( i don't think you would )I don't mean it as a complement. what have you against Nostalgia? This is the third tirade by you against it. why bring laws of physics into the pleasure of looking back. Agreed NI is not MSV's best " classy" album but it hada joie de vivre quality to it which is still fresh. Looking back at the past with a magnifying lens , a bagful of salt and objectivity(?) spoils the whole exercise of looking back... then why take the pain. it may be suited to the likes of Voltaire and Lawrence - and the author of a certain " song for janaki" but for the rest of us it is more what the heck?
and who wrote a tale of two cities by the way?

Vijay,
You are right. At the time of Boys release, though, the pretenders were threatening to outwit ARR with their brand of music (a mixture of good tunes and ARR-ish type of orchestra). IR, however, did not imitate MSV.

man, it's so hard to read transliteration with capital letters for 'nedil' :(
I'm trying hard to recollect the lyrics and tune, but all I could get is 'lalalaa laa' and the first line only :)

the song reminds me of some nursery rhyme... usual HJ stuff.. IMO, KK was an over-hyped album...

Is Harris Jeyaraj over-hyped? Why are some more hyped than others? ARR is also over-hyped IMO but, at least, he delivered sterling stuff for about seven years. That is, the output matched the expectations for a while at least. OTOH, after Minnale and to some extent Kakka Kakka, HJ hasn't given stellar stuff, yet he is popular. How about the following:
1) Steffi Graf
2) Sachin Tendulkar
3) Doug Walters
4) Azharudhin
5) Rajnikanth
6) MGR
7) Yuvraj Singh
8) Elvis Presley
9) Inzamam Ul Haq
10) Sobers
11) M.L.Jaisimha
All of the above were popular. How many of the above, however, were hyped beyond their actual deeds?
No connection? There is, but discussion would be beyond the periphery of TFM-page goals (that is, not music related)!

Naaz:
"It was MSV out of his skin, simulated and psychedelic, like a neon "vacancy" sign. Or a flourescent OM on the Vadapalani Gopuram."
Unwarranted stmt. Please try not induct religious references for establishing either your point or flights of verbiage.

MS -
Being a contrarian is not a good vocation to have (especially in the Land of Heck) and around here I don't expect anybody else to raise their voice in support or defense of my posts. (Music4Ever did his best with the specificity of my points and this exchange, and for that I am indeed thankful.)
It is nice of you to have read my post and to have singled out (what you deem to be) an "unwarranted statement."
What metaphors I choose and how I employ them is my prerogative. I don't see anything pejorative or blasphemous in the above image. In fact, if you were not so in denial, you will acknowledge that many a temple site in India has been disfigured by coloured lights, tubes and television screens - all haphazard and out of place. And, yes, I've seen flourescent OMs on the Vadapalani Gopuram. It stands out not because it is aesthetic.
The impetus behind your post is not about the image or verbiage (which to me is better than bottomless irrelevance) but about calling my secular credentials as a muslim into question.
Masked bigotry is still bigotry. You must be confident in your belief that no one here will take you to task for your petty, communal, faith-based chicanery. Some might even see your cowardice as courage.
How well you know your constituents.

This used to be a fun place free of rants. More and more it seems people come here to scratch their itches rather than enjoy the songs and engage others in discussing the SOTD. Can all the non-musical debates and musical debates that verge on the personal be taken to e-mails or phone calls please.
- From: Saravanan (@ 213.42.2.23)

MS, I feel Naaz was just emphasizing his view that MSV's efforts in NI appear as incongrous/ artificial as the flourescent lights on a temple tower (the lights are an eyesore, I'm sure you'll agree!). Knowing Naaz for nearly two years now, I'm sure he didn't intend any religious reference beyond this metaphorical allusion.
bb, who is the lyricist of 'Oru ooril'? 'Ondra renda aasaigal' was written by Thamarai, if I remember right. Was the SOTD also written by Thamarai?

Saravanan,
I believe Thamarai wrote all the songs in the KK soundtrack.

Saravanan:
"Knowing Naaz for nearly two years now" - good for you and god bless you. To me, he is just another forumer throwing unnecessary flame baits.
Naaz:
That was quite a long speech without a dais (or a basis), a pretty non-musical one flaunting your secular credentials and dispensing unsolicited comments, advice and judgment. Complying with Udhaya's suggn and committed to talking in line with the topic, unlike you, I choose not to reply in such an incongruous and grandiose fashion.
OTOH, if you at some point compulsorily need a 'courageous' reply, I will be happy to provide you with one if I find it a priority ever over an e-mail.
