"Vizhiyil Vizhiyil" is undoubtedly a pleasing melody tuned to GowriManohari scale.
"Enge Enge" , though melodious, reminds me of several such ARR-HH/Srinivas slow numbers.
Is "aaduvome paLLU paaduvome", by any chance a mourning song? How morose can this tune get? Moreover, the stanza "engum sudhandiram" is a poor
imitation of the popular DKP's version. The "ennenna pidikkum" is a rehash
of the HJ's patented seDuctive female solos like the Kaaka kaaka types. bb, if this is the
stellar album of 2004, God save TFM

wonderful song. awesome rendentation by PS and TMS. Classic tune by MSV and mind blowing lurics by Kannadasan. Pity. Even then the movie was a flop. Praptham avalavuthaan.
This song pushes PS-TMS combination in to front of the best duet combination race.

Classic tune by MSV....yes.unfortunately clasical too and that robs the desired rustic effect required for the song's male voice. How many village boatmen would choose brindavana saranga?
My favourite is Sondham eppothum.A grand song with haunting interludes.
Mottai poata STF Vijaykumarkku paatu kidayatha?Villainukku mariyathai ....TFM pageil koodava?

Song of the Day: aarambam indRE aagattum from kaaviya thalaivi.

- Saravanan writes:
Continuing the series of SPB duets from the 70s, I have picked for today the vivacious ‘aarambam indRE aagattum’ from kaaviya thalaivi, where SPB’s youthful enthusiasm finds an equal match in LRE’s irrepressible exuberance.
Lyrics by Kannadasan. Music by MSV.
Thanks to Rathin for helping out with the mp3.

Although Nihaar Ranjan Gupta is more popularly known as a top selling writer of crime thrillers in Bengali, he has several intricately woven, intensely moving novels to his credit. Some of these have found stage and celluloid adaptation. His Ulka was staged by the legendary Rangmahal Theater for a record 500 nights. Ulka was also made into a successful film in 1957. In the following years, Nupoor, Mayamriga, Hospital, Dhoopchaya, Badshah, Godhuli Belay and Tapasi were some of Nihaar Ranjan’s works that were made into films.
However, the most memorable among them all is Uttar Phalguni (1963). It was absorbing tale of an articulate young lawyer, who after initial mistrust, comes to the defence of her long-suffering mother from the charge of murdering her blackmailing husband. The story was surcharged with emotion and left a lasting impact on the readers. The brilliant director Asit Sen (1922-2001) was drawn by the sensitive theme and crafted it for cinema, embellishing the narrative with his unique innovative touches. Uttar Phalguni was a runaway hit, with Suchitra Sen playing with finesse the dual roles of the wretched Debjani who hides behind the façade of the tawaif Pannabhai and her lawyer daughter Suparna. Bikash Ray played Manish, Debjani’s noble lover who brings up Suparna, and Dilip Mukherjee played Suparna’s fiancé Indranil. Three years later, in 1966, Asit Sen retold the story in Hindi. And Mamta too was a commercial and critical success. Suchitra Sen’s co-stars in Mamta were thespian Ashok Kumar and Dharmendra. Roshan’s wondrous songs added to the film’s appeal.
It was this story then, with its proven success, which our Sowcar Janaki chose when decided to turn producer and commissioned KB to do the honours. KB had in the last few years harnessed the latent versatility of Sowcar and gave her wide-ranging, riveting roles. In fact Sowcar made history when she agreed to appear on stage in KB’s drama ‘mezhuguvarthi’, for this was the first time an artiste was doing the reverse journey from cinema to stage.
kaaviya thalaivi (1970/ Selvi Films) had Sowcar Janaki playing with characteristic elegance the double roles of the courtesan Devi and her daughter Krishnaa. Years later, in a candid interview, Sowcar would reminisce that she was 40 when she acted in kaaviya thalaivi, and taking on the double role was a gamble that paid off! Gemini Ganesh as Devi’s lover Suresh and M.R.R.Vasu as Devi’s wayward husband Parandhaman excelled in their well-etched roles. Ravichandran, S. Varalakshmi, Gemini Mahalingam, V.S.Raghavan and S.N.Lakshmi were the others in the cast. Editing was by N.R. Kittu and cinematography was by N.Balakrishnan.

Kannadasan and MSV came up with an unforgettable album which MSV handed on a platter to his trusted PS. And the diva didn’t disappoint, of course! The sparkling mirror of hopes that is ‘kaiyOdu kai sErkkum kaalangaLE’, the short, scintillating ‘kavithaiyil ezhuthiya kaaviyaththalaivi’ where the great Varalakshmi escorts PS, the ruminative ‘en vaanathil aayiram veLLi nilavu’, the stark and wry ‘peN paartha maappiLLaikku kaNNeerum theriyavillai’, and as the fitting finale, the classic ‘oru naaL iravu pagalpOl nilavu’…are all treasured treatises that glitter in PS’s enviable portfolio. MSV sang the raconteur’s song ‘nEraana nedunchaalai Oridathil iru kooraaga pirivadhuNdu’; and summoned SPB and LRE to sing the only duet in the album. This pleasing duet featured the younger Sowcar and Ravichandran, both juniors to senior advocate GG, who brighten the gloomy proceedings with some cheery, romantic moments.
SPB fires the first salvo with his suo motu petition, ‘aarambam indRE aagattum’, he pleads passionately. LRE shrugs it off with an adjournment motion ‘aarEzhu naatkaL pOgattum’. He responds with a prayer for injunction against further postponement ‘appOdhum thaLLi pOdakoodaadhu’, to which she wants an order of estoppel: ‘ippOdhE aLLikoLLa koodathu’. Matters proceed thus in this tantalizing trial, when suddenly resentful of their romance becoming sub judice, he asks petulantly ‘sattangaL thittangaL ellaam sandhikkum vELai yEnamma?’ She brings the case to dismissal sine die quoting the age-old stare decisis ‘pattangaL petRaal pOdhumO, paNpaadu maaRippOga koodumO?’ MSV patterns the beginning of the pallavi in the style of ‘yaarOdum pEsakoodadhu’, the withheld track from ooty varai uRavu, but this song takes on a delightful detour subsequently. The caressingly different 2nd charaNam is where MSV signs with a flourish; and here LRE hints at so many delectable invitations in ‘muthamidalaam…konjam poRuthaal’.
SPB’s first ever song in Tamil, “aththaanOdu ippadi irundhu eththanai naaLaachu” from the unreleased Hotel Ramba was said to be a duet with LRE. SPB and LRE did get to sing some ebullient duets together in the 70s, mostly under the baton of the mellisai mannar. They seem to have got together again recently at the launch of the Kannadasan-MSV trust and had a blast rendering ‘inimai niRaindha ulagam irukku’. Although there are some greatly popular songs by this pair like ‘oorgOlam pOgindRa kiLikkootam ellaam’, ‘angam pudhu vidham azhaginil oru vidham’, ‘maRandhE pOchu romba naaLaachu’, ‘veLLi muthukkaL nadanamaadum veLLam’ and ‘kalyaaNam kachchEri koNdaattam’; ‘aarambam indRE aagattum’, with its cuddlesome enticement, ranks high in my list.
